US may be seeking Israel 'regime change'
The Obama administration's row with Israel over settlements has prompted some analysts to wonder whether it seeks "regime change," a new government that can make peace with the Palestinians. However, the analysts doubt that President Barack Obama's administration, which has made Arab-Israeli peace a national security priority, will achieve anything if it has indeed adopted such a strategy.
China in Midst of ‘Greatest Bubble in History,’
China is in the midst of “the greatest bubble in history,” said James Rickards, former general counsel of hedge fund Long-Term Capital Management LP. Appearing with labor and environmental leaders, Villaraigosa said the proposed increases would ensure that the DWP meets his goal of securing 20% of its energy from renewable sources such as wind and solar by Dec. 31.
Obama Aides See 'Extended Period' of Unemployment
U.S. employers won't hire enough workers this year to lower the jobless rate much below the level of 9.7 percent reached in February, three Obama administration economic officials said today. The proportion of Americans who can't find work is likely to "remain elevated for an extended period," Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner, White House budget director Peter Orszag and Christina Romer, chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers, said in a joint statement.
US man David Headley 'will admit Mumbai plot charges'
A US citizen accused of preparing targets in the 2008 attacks on Mumbai, plans to change his plea to guilty on some charges, US court officials say. David Coleman Headley originally pleaded not guilty to conspiracy charges to bomb public places in India. He already stands accused of plotting to attack a Danish newspaper which published inflammatory cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed in 2005.
Schools urge action on legal drug mephedrone
Head teachers have called for urgent action over the legal drug mephedrone following the deaths of two teenagers. The National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT) says it has the same dangers as any Class A drug and the government should consider a ban. ...Mephedrone is known by various names, including "M-Cat", "MC", "mieow", "meow", "4MMC" or simply plant fertiliser.
Aid flown to cyclone-battered Fiji
Australia and New Zealand have begun airlifting aid to the Pacific island nation of Fiji, battered by a powerful cyclone which sparked sea surges. The planes will take relief supplies including tarpaulins before carrying out an assessment of the damage. A state of emergency was declared after Cyclone Tomas struck on Monday and Tuesday, battering the north and east.
Mexico's President Calderon seeks US help on drugs war
Mexican President Felipe Calderon has called for the United States to share responsibility in the battle against drug traffickers in the two countries. His comments came on a one-day visit to the border city of Ciudad Juarez, where three people connected to the US consulate were killed on Saturday. Hundreds of demonstrators greeted Mr Calderon demanding the withdrawal of Mexican troops from the town.
EU economic governance inevitable, Belgian PM says
Belgian Prime Minister Yves Leterme has said that joint economic governance among some or all EU member states is an inevitable consequence of the creation of the euro. Speaking in an interview with EUobserver about the prospects for setting up a future European Debt Agency (EDA) and a European Monetary Fund (EMF), Mr Leterme predicted that current resistance to the plans will melt away in the coming years.
PM's brother-in-law: Obama anti-Semitic
Dr. Hagi Ben-Artzi, the outspoken brother-in-law of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, has accused US President Barack Obama of harboring anti-Semitism which "bursts out now and again." Speaking to Army Radio, Ben-Artzi said his brother-in-law was well aware of Obama's opinions. "It must be stated clearly and simply. Unfortunately, there is an anti-Semitic president in America," he said.
Softer tone coming from Washington
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who blasted Israel on Friday and kept alive a crisis in relations triggered by last week's announcement of new housing in Ramat Shlomo, reiterated US support for Israel on Tuesday in the first public signs that the crisis was winding down.
