-excerpt from "Utmost with the Least Most"
At Least
Some days I don't want to. You name it, whatever it is, there are just some days.......... I just don't want to.
Doesn't matter if it is good for me, or I should do it.
Doesn't make a difference if I like to do it, or not. It really hasn't anything to do with what it is at all. It has to do with me. Some days I just don't want to do anything.
It's these kind of days God shows his great love for me (and you) by not "putting up with me", but loving me anyways.
It goes something like this:
" Lord I am tired, I didn't sleep good., I know I should read my bible, pray, maybe read a devotional, (maybe write one) , but you know Father, some days I just don;t want to do this "Christian Stuff""
"Some days Lord I don't want to be a Christian."
Of course you see the humor in it. The fact that I am talking to God about it, makes me a Christian. Not the way I feel or what I want or don't want to do. That changes daily, or with a cup of coffee, or by music, or even at times by God intervening. The fact Jesus is in me and I can talk to God about me, even when I don't feel like it, that is a Christian. Conversational with God.
I like this guy I read about in Acts. Seems he was minding his own business going about his day when God interrupts him. God says, I'm sending you Saul. He's blind and I want you to heal him.
Ya gotta love this guy. He doesn't say, Ok and does it. He questions God, just like you and me: Are you sure Lord?
I DON"T THINK SO, might have been my first response, but like God does to me, He tells the guy, Yeah, He is the guy killing Christians, but I got your back. I'll take care of it. I'm just telling you He's on his way to you and the rest is a done deal.
You got it, the guy was already included in the plan. Like it or not, God sent Saul to him. By the time Saul God there, this simple man of God was ready to take Saul and Let Paul see.
Are you like me? Blind to the situations and circumstances that God is sending your way? Blind till someone like this guy "helps" me to see. Do you see? Are you blind? Are you seeing the cirucmstances of Saul's past mistakes? Can you see Paul's eventual future?
No? Neither could the man really.
Pastors and tools God uses (like this devotional) are the means God conspires to open your eyes to a World a whole lot bigger than you are. A world you cannot see or realize.
You are in a VERY BIG PICTURE. One bigger than the "Greatest Show on Earth" and it is called the Universe. God has designed it so you are included in it. When he wants to, the spotlight is on you.
Sometimes you will be like the guy in Acts. Sometimes you're like Saul, just barely getting your eyes opened to the real world out there. Sometimes you are a new Christian in ministry being led around hand and foot till all your Old Scars and Blindness' are healed. Sometimes you don't feel like it.
But at least you are saved.
Or is that the Most?
I learned early on that God was leading me gently, kicking and screaming, by the nose, by hand and foot, by speaking softly, by scaring the hell out of me, by loving heaven into me, by people, places, things, and even direct communication.
God lead me anyways and I am avoiding the ocean like a man afraid of Jaws. I don't want to add being led by the belly of whale, stomach of a fish, or indented with direction from a shark bite.
But At Least he was leading me., at least he never quits leading me.
You know he is the doing the same with you. That you know.
At least is the way I talk to God sometimes as I consider all the days and all the ways the Spirit of God chooses to move me and use me.
How so?
Well, when I feel like I don't want to do anything or be a Christian, I just go to talk to God and He listens to me. I Pray this way:
"Lord, at least I am here."
Because I am talking to Him at those moments he can work with that and use, fill, heal or change me. At least so far he as done that for me.
When you are at your best, you are probably at your least.
Today, at least, talk to God about it.
It's the least you can do, and God may say the best.
"Who do you say that I am?" ~ Mike MacInstosh
Now Jesus and His disciples went out to the towns of Caesarea Philippi; and on the road He asked His disciples, saying to them, "Who do men say that I am?" So they answered, "John the Baptist; but some say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets." He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter answered and said to Him, "You are the Christ."
Mark 8:27-29
Mark 8:27-29
You see, the world sees Jesus as just another god on the shelf, an emergency back-up plan in case circumstances get really bad and they need to be bailed out of something. They only see Jesus as another religion.
Then there are those who have listened to the things of the Lord but have never made a full commitment of faith to truly follow Him. They perceive Jesus to be some prophet, like John the Baptist or Elijah. Indeed, John was a reformer, calling for repentance and a change of ways from the old lifestyle. And Elijah was the national conscience. Even the king and queen feared him because he stood up for what was just and right. He was the spokesperson for God and he stood between opposing opinions.
And while seeing Jesus as a reformer and a prophet are good, they still don't fully represent who He is. Yes, we see Jesus as the One who calls for repentance and a change of lifestyle. Yes, we see Jesus as the spokesman for the Father, always doing the Father's will. But He's much more than that! He is Jesus the Christ, the Son of God! He's the Messiah who died on the cross for your sins so that you could experience a life on this earth that matters, and an eternal life with Him forever. His is our Savior!
The God we worship isn't like any other god or religion. Jesus loves you. He wants a relationship with you. He is reaching out to you and desires to be with you. Jesus is so much more than a prophet or an evangelist. He is the One who took the sins of the world away. He rescued you out of your sins.
So in your day-to-day life, don't let the enemy lull you to sleep, thinking that Jesus is just another something-or-other. Don't relegate Jesus to being just another person who walked this earth.
So…who do you say that He is?
"For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.
For it pleased the Father that in Him all the fullness should dwell, and by Him to reconcile all things to Himself, by Him, whether things on earth or things in heaven, having made peace through the blood of His cross. And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight" (Colossians 1:16-22).
It’s not you being like Christ. It’s Christ in you ~ Jon Courson
Whereof I am made a minister, according to the dispensation of God which is given to me for you, to fulfill the word of God; Even the mystery which hath been hidden from ages and from generations, but now is made manifest to his saints: To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory: | ||
Colossians 1:25-27 | ||
The mystery is Christ living in you, not just telling you what to do ... I spent hours upon hours watching the same film loop over and over. I was attending Biola University, where I threw the discus. The film loop was of Jay Silvester’s world record discus throw. My teammates and I watched the way Silvester pivoted his feet. We watched the way he led with his hips. We watched the way he kept his arm behind him until the chest broke through the ‘glass wall’ before it came through and released the platter. Truly, it was a thing of beauty! But although I watched the film thousands of times, and although I tried an equal number of times to duplicate what Jay Silvester did, I never came close. So too, a lot of Christians are looking at the film loops. They study the Scriptures by the hour, which is wonderful, but it will ultimately lead to frustration until they understand the mystery. You see, if Jay Silvester could have left the film loop and taken up residence within my body, I would have pivoted perfectly, landed my feet just right, led with my hip, and tossed the discus for a world record. ‘This is the mystery,’ writes Paul. ‘This is what I’m coming to share with you. It’s not you being like Christ. It’s Christ in you, showing you how to pray, what to do, and how to spend your time as He writes His will on your heart,’ (Jeremiah 31:33). It’s not imitation. It’s impartation. It’s Christ in us — the hope of glory! |
Leadership: Do you have the courage to take risks? (86-1) ~ Barry Werner
Do you have the courage to take risks? (86-1)
September 7th, 2009 in 1 Samuel, Courage/Risk-Taking, Dependence on God, Old Testament, Personal Development | leave a response
A leader’s confidence in the Lord leads them to take risks that would have ended in failure if the Lord had not been with them. God honors actions born out of radical dependence on Him. Read 1 Samuel 13:16-14:23.
Israel’s leadership was in paralysis. The Philistine army was a well armed, far superior military force that dominated the lives of the Israelites. They had forced Israel to give up all military weapons and they would not even allow a blacksmith to exist in Israel to insure the people could not make more. In the army of Israel only the King Saul and his son Jonathan had a sword or spear. The fighting men in Israel’s army had given up and gone back to their home or were in hiding in caves to keep from engaging the Philistines in battle. Only a small force of six hundred men was with Saul and the military situation looked hopeless.
It was out of this climate that Jonathan made a decision to seek God and take an unthinkable risk to attack a group of soldiers in a Philistine outpost. Jonathan’s words to his armor bearer were “Come, let’s go over to the outpost of those uncircumcised fellows. Perhaps the Lord will act in our behalf. Nothing can hinder the Lord from saving, whether by many or by few.” Because of Jonathan’s courage, trust, and willingness to take a risk, even with his life, God struck the Philistine camp with panic through this warrior and his armor bearer.
Leadership, by its very nature, inspires people to move in directions they would not otherwise have been willing to take. From time to time, good leadership requires excursions into unexplored territory, and draws on a leader’s courage.
The same source of courage that empowered Jonathan is available to any leader that will accept it. When faced with a risky business or ministry decision, the godly leader will look to God in prayer and to God’s revealed Word to make the right choice.
What situation are you now facing that requires courageous leadership and risk-taking? Are you able to let God’s actions on behalf of Jonathan supply you with the courage you need to take the risk?

Isaiah Encouraging All to Wait on the Lord
Those who wait on the LORD shall renew their strength…And I will wait on the LORD, Who hides His face from the house of Jacob; and I will hope in Him…And it will be said in that day: "Behold, this is our God; we have waited for Him, and He willsave us. This is the LORD; we have waited for Him; we will be glad and rejoice in His salvation." (Isaiah 40:31; 8:17; and25:9)
One of Isaiah's encouragements to wait on the Lord came in conjunction with God's promises to give power to the weak. "He givespower to the weak, and to those who have no might He increases strength… They shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint" (Isaiah 40:29, 31). This gracious work of God in people's lives only required their waiting on the Lord. "Those who wait on the LORD shall renew their strength."
Another of Isaiah's encouragements to wait on the Lord occurred at a time when Israel was rebelling against God. "For the LORD spoke thus to me with a strong hand, and instructed me that I should not walk in the way of this people" (Isaiah 8:11). The Lord strongly urged Isaiah to stand against Israel's rebellion, even though they were threatening the prophet. "Do not…be afraid of their threats, nor be troubled. TheLORD of hosts, Him you shall hallow; Let Him be your fear" (Isaiah 8:12-13). Isaiah's encouraging testimony revealed that his heart was fully set on the Lord. "And I will wait on the LORD, Who hides His face from the house of Jacob; and I will hope in Him." God was not revealing Himself to rebellious Israel. On the other hand, Isaiah would"wait on the LORD" (that is, he would "hope in Him").
Isaiah's ultimate encouragement to wait on the Lord is related to God's establishing of His everlasting kingdom. "And it will be said in that day: 'Behold, this is our God; we have waited for Him, and He willsave us. This is the LORD; we have waited for Him; we will be gladand rejoice in His salvation.'" Those who place their hope in the Lord during their pilgrimage on earth will rejoice forever when the Lord implements for eternity the fullness of His salvation for His people!
Dear Lord, I am aware of my utter weakness, so I wait on You for Your strength and stamina. At times, I am intimidated by rebellious people, so I wait on You for protection and vindication. I have experienced so many earthly heartbreaks, so I wait on You for the joy and gladness of Your everlasting kingdom.
FEAR AFFECTS OTHERS ~ Bob Coy
FEAR AFFECTS OTHERS
Now there was a famine in the land, and Abram went down to Egypt to dwell there, for the famine was severe in the land. -Genesis 12:10 (NKJV)
When Abram went down to
On this journey, Abram acquired an Egyptian servant girl named Hagar. Eventually, it would be suggested by Abram's wife that he conceive a child with Hagar. This child would become Ishmael, who would become the father of the Arab nations that would be in constant conflict with the children of
How do we apply this Law of E-Motions to our lives? We may think that our feelings are personal and private. I'm sure that Abram thought the same thing when he allowed fear to have the upper hand in his heart. But the truth is that our emotions will eventually have an effect on those around us, either good or bad. The key is in how we deal with them as they come to us. When we're feeling fearful, angry, depressed, etc., we shouldn't act upon these emotions in a way that will harm others. We should submit our feelings to the Lord and set an example of sacrificial trust for others to follow.
Discuss, Dig, Decide
Discuss with your group how fear brings out the worst in decision making. How has fear affected your ability to make God-honoring decisions?
Dig into Genesis Chapter 12. How do you see fear influencing Abraham? What do you think you would have done in his situation? How can you be free of the fears in your life?
Decide with your group to bring godly confidence to that place in your life where fear is freezing your faith. Search for various Scriptures that speak about the Christian’s victory over fear, and this week commit several to memory. Equip your mind with the truth!
It is easy to begin, but it takes great courage to finish ~ Joyce Meyer
For we have become fellows with Christ (the Messiah) and share in all He has for us, if only we hold our first newborn confidence and original assured expectation [in virtue of which we are believers] firm and unshaken to the end.

Do not, therefore, fling away your fearless confidence, for it carries a great and glorious compensation of reward.
—Hebrews 10:35
But we do [strongly and earnestly] desire for each of you to show the same diligence and sincerity [all the way through] in realizing and enjoying the full assurance and development of [your] hope until the end.
—Hebrews 6:11
All of the scriptures above should be meditated upon and taken very seriously. God is not interested in our starting things that we never finish. It is easy to begin, but it takes great courage to finish. In the beginning of a new thing we get all excited. We have a lot of emotions (ours and everyone else's) to support us. When the emotions wear off and all that is left is a lot of hard work and the need for extreme patience, we find out who really has what it takes to truly succeed.
In God's mind we are never successful if we stop somewhere along the way. He wants us to finish our course and do it with joy! If you have been tempted even recently to give up—don't! If you don't finish the thing you are currently involved in, you will face the same challenges in the next thing you start. Some people spend all their lives starting new things and never finishing anything.
Let us make a decision that we will be more than people who never reached their full potential.

I didn't know who Pastor Romaine was ~ Greg Laurie
He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much; and he who is unjust in what is least is unjust also in much."
--Luke 16:10
I have found that if you want to be used by God, you have to be willing to do the little things first. When I went to Calvary Chapel of Costa Mesa and volunteered my services to Pastor Chuck Smith, I was 19 years old (and I did have hair). I said, "Pastor Chuck, I want to be used by God. I will do whatever you want me to do around here."
I initially believed that he might ask me to take one of the midweek services and start preaching.
Instead, he said, "I have a man I want you to talk t Pastor Romaine."
Now I didn't know who Pastor Romaine was at that point, but I quickly learned.
A former drill sergeant in the Marine Corps, Pastor Romaine seemed to take special delight in whipping young guys like me into shape. My job was to do janitorial work, which involved a lot of sweeping and was strictly on a volunteer basis.
I remember thinking, Wait a second! I thought they would let me serve the Lord. And they were.
Effectively, they were saying, "Be faithful in the little things, and if you aren't, then we aren't going to give you anything else to do."
So I faithfully went about the tasks they set before me, and in time, they let me do Bible studies, usually in places where no one else wanted to go.
I preached in some pretty interesting locations, including mental institutions. I would make hospital calls. I would visit convalescent homes. I would go wherever they allowed me to go. I was anxious to do what I could to serve God.
We have to be willing to do the little things, because we can never be too small for God to use, only too big
We each come to God with different life experiences and expectations ~ Charles Stanley
Psalm 95:6-8
Why is it that two believers can pray about an issue and come away with completely different responses and attitudes? This has to do with their perspective.
We each come to God with different life experiences and expectations. If we want to hear His voice clearly, we must first address those things that affect how well we listen:
1. Our relationship with God. The Father speaks differently to the unsaved than He does to Christians. And while neither God nor the fundamentals of faith ever change, He does tailor His message to individual believers on the basis of their spiritual maturity and unique situations. So two people may hear dissimilar things, because they are at different points on the journey.
2. Our understanding of who God is. How we view the Lord changes the way we hear Him. For example, if you see God as a loving Father, you will hear His encouraging voice and accept His loving discipline. But if you see Him as a harsh, demanding Father, then you may feel as though you can never live up to His expectations.
3. Our Attitude toward God. If we come to the Lord with a proud, rebellious nature, we will naturally not be inclined to hear His voice of authority. However, if we come with a submissive nature, we will most likely hear?and joyfully receive? His Word.
God is still speaking in the world today. Stop and think about what there is in your own life that could get in the way of His message. What affects your ability or willingness to listen? Lay it out before the Lord today, and ask Him to break through the barriers.
God has placed His Holy Spirit in our lives ~ Mark Balmer

“The Investment”
Preparing the Soil (Introduction): I am not an investment consultant, and honestly, I don’t know much about investing. The very little I do understand is that if you don’t invest in anything, then you don’t get anything back. I know that’s kind of basic, isn’t it? As in many things, this principle applies to our spiritual lives, too. If we invest nothing, then we shouldn’t be surprised to see zero return on the investment.
Jesus told a parable about this. The owner of a field gave three of his servants some money and told them to invest it. Two of the servants did so and doubled the amounts they were given. One, however, simply buried the money so that he wouldn’t lose it. Jesus said the owner of the field came back and was pleased with the two who did what he had asked. But the one who buried the coin received an eviction notice (Matthew 25:15-30)! God has entrusted, or better yet invested in, each of His born again followers with a precious gift.
Planting and Watering the Seed (Growth): And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession--to the praise of his glory. (Ephesians 1:13-14)
God has placed His Holy Spirit in our lives as a deposit of what is to come.
This investment in our lives is for the good of His kingdom. When we allow Him to have His way in us, then the investment begins to grow. Just like the guys in the parable, what we have been given can only grow if we invest it wisely. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you. This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples. (John 15:7-8) When we allow God’s Spirit to work through us, we bring glory to God.
Harvesting the Crop (Action/Response): We all have the same investment of the Spirit. We all live on the same planet. We all have to answer a question for our own life: “Where am I investing this gift?” Is it being invested in a ‘growth fund,’ or have I simply buried it in the ground? If you go back to the story, you will notice that the only happy people are those who invested the deposit wisely and willingly. In parallel, the only happy Christians are the ones who have taken hold of the will of God for their lives and allowed the gifts of the Spirit to draw people to Him and therefore, bring glory to God. I want to be one of those servants who hear the Lord say, “…Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!” (Matthew 25:23)
Cultivating (Additional Reading): 2 Peter 1:3-11
Forgiven of all our mistakes ~ David McGee
1 John 1:8-10
8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.
NKJV
Life Lesson NKJV
As followers of Jesus we can be forgiven of all our mistakes.
We tend to think of grace pouring down over us as a one time event. If it was a one time event, we are in trouble. You see the grace of God is something that I need every day. We are told that the mercy of the Lord endures forever. That means it will never grow too small or be worn out. As we look at the life of Peter, we see a man that failed and then got up. There is a hope in that for us. We often count ourselves out when the Lord has not counted us out. There is no one beyond the reach of His grace. If this includes Peter and his denials, it includes us and our misbehaviors. Though we struggle and though we sometimes fail, we can live in this knowledge. We have 24/7 access to His love and forgiveness. We live in the grip of His grace.
Isa 1:18 "Come now, and let us reason together," says the LORD, "Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool. NKJV
Lord, May we run often to the throne of grace that we may be forgiven of every thing that hinders us in running the race. In Jesus' name, Amen

When I was a schoolboy in the "old days" in America I, like the kid in panel one of today's cartoon, was forced to learn "penmanship". And what we dutifully practised was called the "Palmer Method".
"In America, the idea of a prescribed form of handwriting was championed by Austin Palmer over a century ago. While working for the Iowa Railroad Land Company in the 1880s, he observed that clerks doing ornamental penmanship "flourished all capitals with a free-arm swing, with the arm completely off the desk." They used an entirely different movement to write normally. "The most swift and tireless penmen appeared to keep the arm on the desk at all times and formed their letters with little or no motion of the fingers — a free and tireless style of penmanship." Palmer realized that his "muscular movement writing" was something that could be taught and that advertising his "system" could help him to change the world — that everyone's handwriting could be efficiently executed while basically looking the same. There need not be confusion in the world because of a messy scrawl! The Palmer Method of Business Writing sold one million copies in 1912. By 1927, the year that Palmer died, 27 million Americans had learned the Palmer Method." -more
