Leadership: Have you determined in your heart to trust God when faced with difficult circumstances? (82-2)~Barry Werner

Have you determined in your heart to trust God when faced with difficult circumstances? (82-2)

Through a set of very unfortunate circumstances Naomi became the leader of her family. She had a choice to become bitter or trust God. She made the right choice and drew others to God. Re-read the book of Ruth.

Naomi, her husband and two sons left Jerusalem in Judah and went to Moab to avoid the results of a famine. Her husband died shortly after the move and Naomi is left to live with her two sons and their Moabite wives for the next ten years. After the untimely death of her two sons, Naomi was left very vulnerable as a widow with two daughters-in-law in a foreign land and no male in the extended family.

Naomi was a realist. God had dealt her a bitter hand and, unless she acknowledged her situation for what it was, she wouldn’t be able to play that hand intelligently. Yet, even though the situation was bitter, Naomi was not bitter. Her attitude is revealed by Ruth’s response to her. After a very frank discussion, Ruth still wanted to stay with her. Ruth’s response is very telling concerning Naomi’s response to her bitter situation. People do not make this kind of commitment of loyalty to angry, vindictive leaders.

God had taken Naomi’s husband and two sons. Her hopes for a pleasant life had been dashed. All Ruth knew about the God of Israel was learned from the manner in which Naomi had responded to Him after the deaths of her husband and sons. But this observation was enough for Ruth to avow that “Your God (will be) my God” (1:16). Naomi’s reaction to tragedy had drawn a young Gentile woman to want to know God. A leader’s influence, especially in the most difficult times, is a powerful thing. Because Naomi responded as she did, Ruth’s name appears in the genealogy of Jesus Christ.

Have you determined in your heart to trust God when faced with difficult circumstances forced on you without your consent or will you decide in the midst of the challenge if you will trust God or become bitter? Effective leaders learn from Biblical leaders like Naomi and establish truths in their heart before they are in a desperate situation.

"God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble…~Bob Hoekstra

Joshua and Caleb Entering the Promised Land

Surely none of the men who came up from Egypt, from twenty years old and above, shall see the land of which I swore to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, because they have not wholly followed Me, except Caleb…and Joshua…for they have wholly followed the LORD. (Numbers 32:11-12)

Those who live by humble faith enter into the fullness of God's provisions of grace. "God resists the proud, but gives grace to thehumble…we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand"(James 4:6 and Romans 5:2). Joshua and Caleb illustrated this truth byentering the Promised Land.

As we have seen, God's great salvation is both "from" and "unto." "We have passed from death to life" (1 John 3:14). Also, this life we have been given is to be experienced in abundance. "I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly" (John 10:10). Israel's calling by the Lord from bondage in Egypt to fullness in the land pictures this truth. "So I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up from that land to a good and large land, to a land flowing with milk and honey" (Exodus 3:8).

Joshua and Caleb were the only adult Israelites in that first generation who went "into the fullness" of God's calling. They alone went into the land. "Surely none of the men who came up from Egypt, from twenty years old and above, shall see the landbecause they have not wholly followed Me, except Caleb…and Joshua." Joshua would not only enter the land, he would lead Israel into God's victory. "Then Moses called Joshua and said to him…you must go with this people to the land…and you shall cause them to inherit it" (Deuteronomy 31:7). Caleb would not only enter the land, he would still be strengthened by faith in God even in his old age. "Here I am this day, eighty-five years old. As yet I am as strong this day as I was on the day that Moses sent me; just as my strength was then, so now is my strength for war"(Joshua 14:11).

Unlike Joshua and Caleb, the other Israelites followed the Lord's calling out from Egypt, but they did not follow Him into the land. Many Christians repeat this same error today. They have followed the Lord as He led them out of the spiritual death of sin and guilt. They are "out of Egypt." They are forgiven of their sins. They have new life in Christ. However, they do not follow the Lord on "into the land." They do not follow by faith into abundance of life. They do not follow the Lord in humble dependence for transformation, for fruitfulness, for a life of spiritual victory.

Dear God of Israel, thank You for bringing me out of the Egypt of my own spiritual bondage. Now, as Joshua and Caleb did, I long to follow You wholly into the fullness that you desire me to walk in, in Jesus' name, Amen.

‘No, Paul. When you are weak, then My strength is manifested. My grace is sufficient for you’ ~Jon Courson

But I trust in the Lord that I also myself shall come shortly. Yet I supposed it necessary to send to you Epaphroditus, my brother, and companion in labour, and fellowsoldier, but your messenger, and he that ministered to my wants. For he longed after you all, and was full of heaviness, because that ye had heard that he had been sick. For indeed he was sick nigh unto death ...
Philippians 2:24-27
Epaphroditus was the man the Philippians sent to encourage and to bring financial assistance to Paul. ‘I’m sending him back your way,’ said Paul, ‘because he was concerned that you might be worried about his condition, having heard he had been sick.’

What? Epaphroditus was sick when he was with Paul — Paul, the one whose sweatbands were used to bring healing to people; Paul, the one who laid his hands on people and they recovered; Paul, the one who was known for moving in the miraculous. Why didn’t Paul heal Epaphroditus immediately? For the same reason he didn’t heal Trophimus (II Timothy 4:20), or Timothy (I Timothy 5:23), or even himself (II Corinthians 12:7).

Ultimately, everyone will be healed, for by Jesus’ stripes, we are all healed (Isaiah 53:5). The only question is timing. When they ask for healing, some are healed immediately. Others, five years later. Others, not until they get to heaven. Healing has nothing to do with a person’s spirituality or faith. It has everything to do with God’s sovereignty.

Three times Paul prayed for deliverance, only to hear the Lord say, ‘No, Paul. When you are weak, then My strength is manifested. My grace is sufficient for you’ (II Corinthians 12:9). Thus, I encourage those who are afflicted to follow Paul’s model, to pray 3 times, 30 times, or 300 times —until they receive what they’re asking for or until they have a peace in their heart which says, ‘This is what the Lord has for me, and I can embrace it.’

Don't make a 'frenemy' of the world~Greg Laurie

One thing I find enjoyable about the summer is going to the beach, especially when it is hot. But the bad thing about the beach is having to put a bathing suit on. Maybe you have gained a few pounds over the winter and are a little reluctant to go out. Maybe you have even gone on a diet or are considering going on one.

The problem I have found with diets is they are fine until you are hungry. Anyone can go on a diet when they have a full stomach. But when temptation arrives in very appealing wrappings, it becomes very difficult to resist. That is because forbidden things have a certain charm.

In the same way, the enemy offers his temptation in packages that appeal to us. He knows how to market his wares and make bad things look good. A case in point: Eve lingering at the very Tree God told her to stay away from.

Sometimes we even feel guilty when we are tempted, but we need to recognize that everyone will be tempted. There is no sin in being tempted, because it is not the bait that constitutes temptation – it is the bite. So if you are being barraged by temptation of late, that may be an indication that you are doing something right, not wrong, because the enemy sees you as a threat to his kingdom. Thus he is trying to bring you down.

And here is something to consider: Though none of us likes temptation, it can actually have a positive effect in our lives. It can actually make us stronger. In fact, the Bible says that "God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation. Afterward they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him" (James 1:12 NLT).

So from this verse we learn three things about temptation: There is a reward for the person who endures temptation; you will be blessed (or "happy" as the word also can be translated); and temptation can be endured. God never will give you more than you can handle (see 1 Corinthians 10:13). It may not feel that way in the moment, because the fact is that when temptation is coming your way, it looks as though what would bring the most happiness would be giving in to it. The reality is that happiness comes from resisting and overcoming temptation. There is the initial euphoria that temptation can bring, but then you discover that what looks so appealing on the outside is actually filled with poison. That is how temptation works.

Martin Luther said, "One tempted Christian is more profitable and useful to other Christians than a hundred that have not known the depths of Satan, that have not been in the school of temptation." It has also been said that Christians are a lot like teabags: You don't know what they are made of until you put them into hot water.

Are you in "hot water" right now? Are you being tempted? Everyone will face it in some way, shape, or form. No one is exempt. And while we have all faced temptation ineffectively, it is possible to resist it effectively.

The problem is that we become "frenemies" with the world. A "frenemy" is a person whom you normally don't get along with, but perhaps if it serves both of your purposes, you temporarily become friends. It might be a relationship that is short of love-hate. Then again, it just might be a description of a relationship that is poisonous, and whenever you are around that person, it drags you down spiritually. Thus, they become a frenemy. Such a person is not really a friend, but in reality, an enemy. And some of us have become frenemies with this world.

What I mean by "the world" is what the Bible describes as "a craving for physical pleasure, a craving for everything we see, and pride in our achievements and possessions" (1 John 2:16 NLT). When the Bible speaks of "the world," it doesn't mean the planet Earth; it is speaking of a mentality, a pervasive philosophy that infects everything everywhere.

Yes, the world is enticing. But for its temptation to work, we must desire what it is offering. The answer is not within; the problem is within. And we have ourselves to thank when we give in to temptation, because it is just our nature, just as it is the nature of a scorpion to strike.

Why do we do the stupid stuff that we do? It is just our nature – our human, combustible, evil, sinful nature that is inside every one of us. When we face temptation, we have to be aware of that, because one moment of giving in to temptation could lead to a lifetime of regret. We will end up serving what we worship. That is why Jesus would not even give a moment of worship at the altar of the devil. Neither should we.

We have to know that God loves us even during the times when we make mistakes and fail~Joyce Meyer

For I am persuaded beyond doubt (am sure) that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities, nor things impending and threatening nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation will be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
—Romans 8:38-39

I can talk about the love of God throughout an entire weekend conference, I can demonstrate all the different ways that God has proven His love for us, but I cannot force anyone to receive His love. It is a personal choice that each person has to make. Even when we make mistakes and know that we do not deserve the love of God, we must still receive His love in order to enjoy the fullness of what He wants us to have.

The love of God will carry you through to victory when all of the powers and principalities of hell seem to be against you. The love of God will carry you through the storms of life and into a place of calm peace. But you will never be more than a conqueror (See Romans 8:37) if you do not have a revelation of how much you are loved by God.

We have to know that God loves us even during the times when we make mistakes and fail. His love is not restricted to the days when we think we have performed well. We need to be confident of His love especially when we have trials and when the devil is mocking us with accusations, such as, "Well, you must have done something wrong."

When the accuser comes, we must know that God loves us.Even if we did do something wrong, even if we did open a door for the devil to enter in, even if we did act in ignorance, God still loves us. God is on our side (See Romans 8:28), and He is going to show us what we need to do to get out of the mess we got ourselves into.

I don't think any of us wants to dishonor God.~Bob Coy

HONOR: A MATTER OF GIVING

Honor the LORD with your possessions, And with the firstfruits of all your increase . . . .-Proverbs 3:9 (NKJV)

I don't think any of us wants to dishonor God.

Even people who don't have a relationship with God understand that disrespecting Him is something that you just don't want to do. Sadly, a lot of Christians are doing exactly that.

How so?

This was the very question the Israelites asked God at a time when He confronted them about dishonoring Him:

The LORD Almighty says to the priests: "A son honors his father, and a servant respects his master. I am your father and master, but where are the honor and respect I deserve? You have despised my name! But you ask, 'How have we ever despised your name?'" (Malachi 1:6 NLT)

God went on to tell them that they were guilty of dishonoring Him by being negligent in their giving toward Him:

"You have despised my name by offering defiled sacrifices on my altar." . . . "You defile them by saying the altar of the LORD deserves no respect. When you give blind animals as sacrifices, isn't that wrong? And isn't it wrong to offer animals that are crippled and diseased? Try giving gifts like that to your governor, and see how pleased he is!" says the LORD Almighty. (Malachi 1:7-8 NLT)

If I may paraphrase here, God is saying,

Help me out with this. You want me to honor you, but you feel the freedom to dishonor me by giving me your unwanted leftovers? What does this say about your heart toward me? And what does it say about our heart toward Him when we do the same thing?

As New Testament believers, we're no longer bound to the sacrificial system of the Old Testament (Colossians 2:16-17), but we still have a responsibility to give generously to the Lord's work (2 Corinthians 9:6-7). If this isn't happening in our lives, then we're guilty of the same sin as the Israelites were in their day.

Without being legalistic on this point, we must recognize that God is either being honored or being dishonored by our giving, and the difference is bound to be reflected in our character.

Discuss with your group how honor is reflected in giving. How have you seen someone honor God thorough a gracious gift?

Dig into Malachi Chapter 1. What do you think was occurring in the hearts of those offering the weak sacrifices? What was God’s answer to this act of dishonor? How does this passage challenge you to rethink what you give and how you give it?

Decide as a group to take a radical step of obedience and faith. Gather together an offering of time, talents, and treasures and present your unexpected offering to a family who is suffering financial hardship. Explain that the reason for your gift is to show them the love of Jesus!
