The Call (Last Calls Editor)

Jesus said,

Go and Preach saying, The Kingdom of Heaven is at Hand
Freely you have received, freely give.

When I got saved, we were a bunch of hippies, not yet into our eventual yuppie stage so many of us did as Jesus said, and miracles followed, people got saved, we saw God move, and we took for granted what God said was true.

As fame came, many went different routes and different ministries, but some never changed formats:
  1. Firefighters for Christ, took poor recordings and provided the means, the tools and the abiltiy to go out and use quality teachers cassettes, to ministers to millions and provide cheap tools, but even free libraries, to allow the poor people and the rich, to recieve the bible, freely.
  2. I know, I took one of those free libraries and help start the Christian Lending Library in Klamath Falls Oregon over 20 years go. Passed on to Mary Ann who kept the Vision alive till she died, her daughter Mary Lynn does the same now with over ten thousand combined books and tapes available in downtown Klamath Falls Oregon. And like Firefighters for Christ, Free. No late charge, no lost charge, no money donations but all used books accepted.
Both of these are done by individuals, who though they attend church's, do the ministries as seperate so God can use as he wants to free from entanglements that might strangle the Word going out.

I have seen many ministries started like this and started some myself or helped them. Calvary Chapel of Costa Mesa's Early Tape Lending Library, was once one of those. All Volunteers, tapes went out to people, places and ministries that eventually the Library was absorbed by CCCM.

I can't let some say they couldn't afford to be a Christian, because it cost too much money to get quality materials. I can't let some say that Jesus never was available where I was at, or no one told me, or showed me where I could study, learn and discover Jesus for myself.

I can't charge for what God gave me freely so Last Call was birthed so you could,

Freely receive, Freely Give

Sharon Rosati- Rose of Sharon is taking over the Editing of Last Call.
Like all who came before her in this type of ministry, and most who come after her discover, she can ill afford to do the work she is doing, but in simple trembling trust, she does what God has her to do
anyways.

She is the Editor of Last Call, by the Holy Spirit in her life, Jesus in her heart and the Father holding her hand.

 MJS asked if I wanted to write a brief bio, or testimony about how the Lord has impacted my life.  I thought about that for a moment.

I remember listening to other people talk about how they came to know the Lord, and thinking I hope nobody ever asks me that question.   Well now they have, and as much as I love to talk I am speechless, almost.

I came as a child actually.  Early on He was my constant companion.  He comforted me when I was afraid.  Said good job when I ate worms to impress the boys in the sandpile, and frowned when I beat them up for bullying my older brother.  He even smiled when He heard me sing "Onward Christian soldiers...marching as to war...with the cross of Jesus...".  Yep, He loved me good!

Approaching my teens, I grew to love Him even more.  I decided to "commit" to Him and be his wife.  Don't laugh, I was serious. coming from a RC background at that time, I had no choice.  Late one June evening in 1967 I was staring out my window into a star filled sky and thinking about marrying Jesus when I knew that wasn't going to happen.  Something strange occured that I couldn't understand,   a thought came into my head about a man and three children.  Wait a minute I thought - I can't have children, I'm to be married to Jesus.  Silence seemed to fill my soul, and I was scared.

Soon thereafter, the story gets all too familiar to many.  I was exposed to all the ways of the world...and failed in everyway possible it seems to get it right...yet all along, beside me there He was.  Even when I thought He had abandoned me again...sooner or later He would return and remind me that He loved me.

I finally got to the point in my life, when I thought I was cleaned up enough to recommit myself to Him.  I did and it was a glorious time!  Had I spent more time in the word, alone with Him, I might have expected the next onslaught from the world, my flesh, and the enemy.  This time was even more devastating...because I knew that I knew that I knew.....

The one thing He asked was that I believe Him...I do.  He has been through it all with me, and loves me still!

Last Call

I also believe that this age of grace is drawing to a close, and He is returning soon for His own.  With every fiber of His being He is calling to His own...and strengthening the weak to believe.

That is why I am here, devoted to sharing as much of His word as possible, that anyone who hears might draw near, and draw deep of His amazing Grace.

Our stories may differ, but History remains the same.

He came to save you from yourself, from this world, tell you that He is near, and that He loves you!  He asks one thing...do you believe?

I do...till He comes for me I wait...

Jesus Appears, Commissions and Ascends ~ WoW 7 minute Bible

Jesus Appears, Commissions and Ascends

John 21:1-17; Matthew 28:16-20; Luke 24:44-53; John 20:30-31; Psalm 113:1-2; Proverbs 20:13
After these things Jesus showed Himself again to the disciples at the Sea of Tiberias, and in this way He showed Himself: Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of His disciples were together. Simon Peter said to them, "I am going fishing."
They said to him, "We are going with you also." They went out and immediately got into the boat, and that night they caught nothing. But when the morning had now come, Jesus stood on the shore; yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus. Then Jesus said to them, "Children, have you any food?"

They answered Him, "No."

And He said to them, "Cast the net on the right side of the boat, and you will find some." So they cast, and now they were not able to draw it in because of the multitude of fish.

Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment (for he had removed it), and plunged into the sea.

But the other disciples came in the little boat (for they were not far from land, but about two hundred cubits), dragging the net with fish. Then, as soon as they had come to land, they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid on it, and bread. Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish which you have just caught."

Simon Peter went up and dragged the net to land, full of large fish, one hundred and fifty-three; and although there were so many, the net was not broken. Jesus said to them, "Come and eat breakfast."

Yet none of the disciples dared ask Him, "Who are You?"-knowing that it was the Lord. Jesus then came and took the bread and gave it to them, and likewise the fish.

This is now the third time Jesus showed Himself to His disciples after He was raised from the dead.

So when they had eaten breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me more than these?"

He said to Him, "Yes, Lord; You know that I love You."
He said to him, "Feed My lambs."
He said to him again a second time, "Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?"

He said to Him, "Yes, Lord; You know that I love You."
He said to him, "Tend My sheep."

He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of Jonah, do you love Me?" Peter was grieved because He said to him the third time, "Do you love Me?"

And he said to Him, "Lord, You know all things; You know that I love You."
Jesus said to him, "Feed My sheep."

Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had appointed for them. When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted.

And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen.

Then He said to them, "These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms concerning Me." And He opened their understanding, that they might comprehend the Scriptures.

Then He said to them, "Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day, and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

And you are witnesses of these things. Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon you; but tarry in the city of Jerusalem until you are endued with power from on high."

And He led them out as far as Bethany, and He lifted up His hands and blessed them. Now it came to pass, while He blessed them, that He was parted from them and carried up into heaven. And they worshiped Him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy, and were continually in the temple praising and blessing God. Amen.

And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.

When enough is enough ~ Raul Ries

Never Enough

Now godliness with contentment is great gain.”

1 Timothy 6:6

One day Lord Congleton, a godly man, overheard one of his kitchen servant’s remark, “Oh, if I only had five pounds, I would be perfectly content.” Pondering her statement, he decided to see someone who was perfectly content. So he went to the woman and said he had heard her remark and wanted to do something about it.

He proceeded to give her a five-pound note. With great feeling, she thanked him. Congleton then left the kitchen but paused for a moment by the door. As soon as the woman thought he was gone, she began to complain, “Why on earth didn’t I ask for ten pounds?”

Thought for the Day:

A happy man is one who wants what he has.
An unhappy man gets what he wants but never stops wanting.

Correcting your needs ~ Mike MacIntosh

Then Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, "One thing you lack: Go your way, sell whatever you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross, and follow Me." But he was sad at this word, and went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions.
Mark 10:21-22

Are you worried about your finances? Has the current economic crisis put fear into your heart? If so, take comfort in what Jesus is saying to this rich young ruler. You see, Jesus is trying to tell the young man that having an abundance of possessions and financial security is not what brings happiness and joy into one's life. Likewise, when there isn't the financial security you'd like to have, there is no reason for sorrow, anger, or bitterness. These emotions are sinful. You see, we need to rely on Jesus Christ in all things, whether in tough financial times or in times of over-abundance. Look at what Paul says in Philippians:

"Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" (Philippians 4:11-13).

What Paul understood--and the rich young ruler didn't--was that Jesus Christ is the only thing that matters in this life. All of the possessions of the world won't bring the joy, contentment, happiness, or peace that you are looking for. Notice that the rich young ruler kept the commandments listed: Do not commit adultery; Do not murder; Do not steal; Do not bear false witness; Do not defraud; Honor your father and your mother. But he was missing the single-most important commandment. Look at what Jesus says later in this Gospel of Mark:

"And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. This is the first commandment. And the second, like it, is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these" (Mark 12:30-31).

Ultimately the one thing that this rich young man lacked was Jesus! So, don't let the current economic or political storms take you away from your first love. Keep your eyes fixed on Jesus Christ, the author and finisher of your faith. Be content in all things and let Him work out every circumstance. Trust in Him with your life and with your needs.

He works beyond possibilities~ Joyce Meyer

God . . . is able to [carry out His purpose and] do superabundantly, far over and above all that we [dare] ask or think [infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, hopes, or dreams].
— Ephesians 3:20

When I pray about or simply meditate on all the people who are hurting, I have a strong desire to help them all. I sometimes feel that my desire is bigger than my ability, and it is—but it is not bigger than God's ability! When the thing we are facing in our lives or ministries looms so big in our eyes that our mind goes "tilt," we need to think in the spirit.

In the natural, many things are impossible. But in the supernatural, spiritual realm, with God nothing is impossible. God wants us to believe for great things, make big plans, and expect Him to do things so great it leaves us with our mouths hanging open in awe. James 4:2 tells us we have not because we ask not! We can be bold in our asking.

Sometimes in my meetings people will approach the altar for prayer and sheepishly ask if they can request two things. I tell them they can ask God for all they want to, as long as they trust Him to do it His way, in His timing. It is untold what people can do—people who don't appear to be able to do anything.

God does not usually call people who are capable. If He did, He would not get the glory. He frequently chooses those who, in the natural, feel as if they are in completely over their heads but who are ready to stand up on the inside and take bold steps of faith as they get direction from God. We usually want to wait until we "feel ready" before we step out, but if we feel ready then we tend to lean on ourselves instead of on God.

Know your weaknesses and know God—know His strength and faithfulness. Above all else, don't be a quitter.

People are dying to hear from you ~ Jack Graham

And he said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.”

-- Mark 16:15

Do you realize that God has a special calling on your life? He does!

You may not have sensed God leading you to become a missionary or a preacher, but you still have a calling! And it is a mission that you must not shirk.

No less than five times in the Scripture, Jesus called his followers to “go” into the world and to be witnesses for him. And that’s exactly what he is saying to you today. He’s calling you to be his witness. And you can begin right where you are!

There can be no doubt… you are called. Have you listened for his voice? Have you heeded that call and followed his will obediently? It is so important that you do.

You see, God has placed specific people in your path who need to hear what he has done for you. They need to hear about the blessings and peace of God. They need to know that God loves them and that he has a future of hope for them.

So be bold in Christ Jesus! Pray for those who have needs in their lives. Be a witness of his saving grace. This is your calling, the work of the ministry that God has entrusted to you.

GOD HAS PLACED SPECIFIC PEOPLE IN YOUR PATH WHO NEED TO HEAR WHAT HE HAS DONE FOR YOU!

Honorable traditions ~ Jon Courson

Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.
2 Thessalonians 2:15

Newer translations correctly render the word ‘traditions’ as ‘ordinances.’ There are those who say, ‘Baptism is no longer necessary. The Lord’s Table is optional. There’s no need to pray the Lord’s Prayer. Meeting together for Bible study is helpful, but not crucial.’

Jesus was baptized in water. So was Peter. So was John. So was D.L. Moody, C.H. Spurgeon, and Billy Graham. I may not have the boldness of D. L. Moody, the fervency of C.H. Spurgeon or the anointing of Billy Graham — but I can stand exactly where they stood in the waters of baptism.

I can sit where the greatest Christians have sat throughout the ages and have the same meal they had as I partake of Communion.

I can’t preach like R.A. Torrey or Charles Finney — but I pray exactly as they did when I pray, ‘Our Father which art in heaven ...’

I don’t have the power of the early Church, but I do exactly as they did every time I meet with fellow believers to study the Word (Acts 2:42).

We have a glorious heritage, gang. And Paul would say to us, even as he said to the Thessalonians, ‘Don’t minimize the traditions. Hold on to them. Your faith will be the richer, your walk will be the surer for it.’

The pride of "self" making ~ David McGee

1 Corinthians 1:18

"For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God."
KJV

Life Lesson

The fact people think we are foolish is evidence that they are perishing.

There are many websites, books, movies and other things portraying the message of the cross as foolish. People pursue legal action to remove the cross and its meaning. Why? The cross offends those who do not want to hear the message. Jesus Christ came and died for our sins, and that's offensive?! Yes, we are all sinners. "Well, that is just so judgmental." No, friend, it's the truth. People don't want to hear it. Jesus and the cross demand that we admit our failings. We cannot admit we are sinners and yet cling to our pride.

Pride feels so good, doesn't it? "Look at me. I am a self-made man. Come and be amazed by my shiny pride." No friend...You are an incomplete and malfunctioning created being without Jesus in your heart. In spite of your pride, He stands knocking and waiting for you to open the door and ask Him in. It's an incredibly simple plan that requires an incredibly simple response of child-like faith and a King David sized heart of boldness.

Dear Father,
Thank You for loving me. Thank You for the invitation of the cross. I know my sins have separated me from You, Lord. I ask that You forgive me of all of my sins. Give me the power to live for You all the days of my life. Thank You that You have made my relationship with You so simple. In humble faith, I give You my weaknesses and flaws and ask that Your glory be revealed in me. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Confusing predicaments ~ Chuck Swindoll

Romans 8

Ah, those predicaments . . . life is full of them. Often they are of our own making. Other times they just seem to happen mysteriously to us. Occasionally, predicaments are comical or borderline crazy. Sometimes they can be irritating and troublesome. But one thing is for sure: Predicaments are unpredictable. And embarrassing. And confusing. And really weird.

Like the time I was leading a Bible study at a church I'd never attended before. Shortly after getting underway, I noticed two people (latecomers) standing at the door, reluctant to join us. The woman was much older than the man, so I paused, looked in their direction, and welcomed them to join our group, saying, "Why don't you and your mother pull up a chair and join us?" Well, you could've heard a pin drop. Too late I realized my mistake. She was his wife! Throughout the first part of the session (which seemed like an eternity), I felt like dead meat, and they glared at me like a couple of circling buzzards. When we took a coffee break, they were out of there.

At times like this, I find a measure of relief in knowing that Scripture records one predicament after another. Can you imagine how Peter felt immediately after he had deliberately denied the Lord for the third time . . . then heard that ominous cock crowing in the distance? Talk about embarrassing.

And what about Daniel, who refused to obey the injunction of King Darius. Though Daniel continued to obey God, he wound up spending the night in a den of lions. Talk about confusing!

And who can forget David's inexplicable actions when he fled from Saul and found himself in enemy territory and "disguised his sanity . . . and acted insanely in their hands, and scribbled on the doors of the gate, and let his saliva run down into his beard" (1 Sam. 21:13). Talk about weird!

I'm comforted when I realize that God is in sovereign control of all of life. He not only knows the times and the seasons; He is also Lord of the unexpected and the unpredictable. Our times and our trials are in His hands. Even when we feel embarrassed or confused or do something really weird.

Whether we're on cloud nine, enjoying His blessings, or caught in the thicket of some tangled predicament, He hasn't let us go. By His grace, He remains "for us" (Rom. 8:31).

Remember, He is the God of your soaring spirits as well as
your perplexing predicaments.

Awake! and listening? ~ Charles Stanley

Listening Through Restlessness

Esther 6:1-11

When we're too preoccupied to hear God's voice, He will often get our attention by giving us a restless spirit. The book of Esther gives us a wonderful example of this.

In the sixth chapter, we see that King Xerxes "could not sleep so he gave an order to bring the book of records, the chronicles, and they were read before the king" (v. 1). As a result, Xerxes became aware of an assassination plot that had been foiled by a man named Mordecai. Filled with gratitude for this act of service, the ruler made plans to honor him.

What Xerxes could not have known, though, is that this hero had been targeted by Haman, one of the royal advisors. Not only had Haman plotted to hang Mordecai the Jew (5:14); he was also planning to exterminate the entire Jewish population. As a result of the king's intervention, however, Mordecai and all of the Jews were saved.

Now, what started this process? It was a restless night. Xerxes did not know why he couldn't sleep, but we know?the king had insomnia because God was trying to get his attention. The Lord had something important to say to Xerxes, and His way of getting through to him was an unpleasant night of sleeplessness.

How often has this happened to you? You go about your career and activities, but a restlessness seems to hang over you, often causing sleepless nights. In such moments, dare to bow and pray, "Lord, what is it You want to tell me?" You'll discover that God can and will speak in your unrest.

Walking by faith and not by sight~Bob Hoekstra

We walk by faith, not by sight…while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. (2 Corinthians 5:7 and 4:18)

The Christian life is a walk. It is comprised of day by day steps from where we are to where the Lord wants us to go (both spiritually and geographically). This walk is undertaken by faith, not by sight. "We walk by faith, not by sight."

Walking by sight is the natural manner by which human beings walk. This is true both for literal walking, as well as for taking the proverbial journey through life. When engaged in physical walking, people rely upon visual data (along with input from other human senses, like sound, smell, and touch). Likewise, as the unredeemed are engaged in their trek through life, they set their course and proceed by that which their natural abilities provide. We who know the Lord Jesus Christ cannot walk in this manner in His kingdom. We must walk by faith, by depending upon our Lord, His word, and the work of grace by His Holy Spirit. Spiritual progress is made "while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen."

So often, things are not as they appear to be in the natural. Consider Joseph being sold to slave traders by his jealous and deceitful brothers. It did not look like Joseph was being groomed to be Prime Minister in Egypt. Think of Pharoah and his army closing in on Israel, as they were trapped beside the Red Sea. It did not look like Israel would be delivered and the Egyptian army would be destroyed. Remember young David standing before gigantic Goliath. It did not look like the giant would be defeated and David would enjoy a thorough victory. Only eyes of faith could really appreciate what was actually happening.

The cross of our Lord Jesus is undoubtedly the greatest example of things not always being what they appear to be. As Jesus hung upon the cross, it appeared that godless men had defeated the most godly man that ever lived. "Jesus of Nazareth, a Man attested by God to you by miracles, wonders, and signs which God did through Him in your midst…Him…strong>you have taken by lawless hands, have crucified, and put to death" (Acts 2:22-23). Yet, in fact, God was at work, preparing a resurrection victory over sin and death for all who would believe. "Whom God raised up, having loosed the pains of death, because it was not possible that He should be held by it" (Acts 2:24).

Heavenly Father, I want to walk with You by faith. I desire to respond to the circumstances of life by what You have said in Your word and by what You are able to do. Too many times, I have set my course by sight, relying upon the appearance of things. Teach me to trust in You more and more, in Jesus' name, Amen.

The message is greater than the messenger~Bob Coy

This is the prophecy Balaam delivered: ". . . A star will rise from Jacob; a scepter will emerge from Israel." (Numbers 24:15-17 NLT)

Sometimes prophecies came from an unexpected source. That's the case with the prophecy above, which was given by Balaam, who happens to be one of the more curious characters in the Bible.

He was not an Israelite but was said to be a diviner from the region of the Euphrates River. Balak, a king who was hostile toward Israel, hired Balaam to curse God's chosen people as they wandered through the wilderness. At first, Balaam wouldn't comply because he knew that God was with the Israelites. But Balak upped the ante, Balaam's greed got the better of him, and he agreed to pronounce a curse upon the people of Israel.

Instead of getting a curse out of Balaam, Balak got the prophecy that a "star will rise from Jacob" and "a scepter will emerge from Israel." In other words, a mighty King would arise out of Israel and a star would signal His coming. This is actually a prophecy pointing to Jesus Christ and adds significance to the star that led the wise men to Him ( Matthew 2:2). Moreover, Balaam went on to say that Balak's nation, Moab, would be cursed instead of Israel (Numbers 24:17). This certainly wasn't what Balak had paid for!

This unexpected turn of events underscores something fascinating about prophecy. It shows that God can even use a covetous mercenary like Balaam to proclaim His truth. The message is what truly matters, not the messenger who delivers it.

Balaam eventually provided Balak with a strategy to corrupt the Israelites and was killed when God called His people to do some spiritual housecleaning (Numbers 31:1-16). He stands as a tragic figure in God's Word. And yet, even his sin wasn't enough to prevent the prophetic word concerning Christ from being proclaimed. The message is always greater than the messenger, and in Balaam's case, it was much greater.

Discuss and share with the group about a time when you received something significant from an unexpected source. What message did you receive from the messenger?

Dig into Numbers 24. Where do you see the difference displayed between the message and the messenger? What were the prophetic words pointing to the future? When have you compromised with the truth God has entrusted to you? What can you learn from this lesson?

Decide to be messengers to those who have given their lives to giving the message. As a group, write a letter of encouragement and support to someone on the mission field. Remind them of the importance of their faithful service and sacrifice.

What limitations may be holding you back as a leader? (91-1) ~ Barry Werner

What limitations may be holding you back as a leader? (91-1)

As we prepare to leave the examples of King Saul’s leadership behind and move on to David and other leaders in 2 Samuel, it seems it may be wise to do one last comparison of the differences in leadership between Israel’s first and second king. Read 2 Samuel 5:1-4.

From the studies of previous weeks the following are some similarities of Saul and David:

  • Both were anointed king of Israel by God.
  • Both men started with great potential to become successful kings of Israel.
  • Both men were gifted soldiers and had loyal troops.
  • Both received council from godly men i.e. Samuel.
  • Both faced great military challenges from the surrounding nations.
  • Both men had great failures they were called to account for.
  • Both men had an opportunity to repent of their actions and return to a servant heart before God.

Some of the areas in Saul’s life that limited his leadership:

  • Saul began his reign with fear hiding among the equipment. All through his time as king, fear motivated his decisions.
  • Saul didn’t honor lines of authority and was impatient and refused to wait for Samuel to arrive to make an offering for the people. Saul pushed forward with an illegal offering.
  • Saul was arrogant and self-centered and denied his own culpability even after Samuel confronted him for a bold faced lie when he disobeyed God’s orders.
  • Saul was impulsive and made a foolish oath that almost cost him the life of his son Jonathan.
  • Saul was deceitful when he offered his daughter Michal to David, hoping that David would die in battle trying to meet the criteria Saul had established to win her hand.
  • Saul harbored jealousy and became depressed when people compared him to David after David had defeated Goliath.
  • Saul had an anger problem and actually threw his spear at David trying to kill him and even worse, if that is possible, he threw his spear at his own son in a fit of anger trying to kill him.

David also had some areas that could have easily limited his potential as a leader:

  • David’s family put him down several times. His father did not believe David had the potential Samuel was looking for in a king so did not call him in from the field. David’s brothers put him down when David asked questions concerning Goliath and the reward the king was offering to the man who killed Goliath. His nephew Joab openly challenged David’s judgment when David made an alliance with Abner, leader of Saul’s army.
  • The leaders over David did not make his life or transition to the throne easy. Saul repeatedly tried to kill David and had spies all over the nation who were willing to turn David over to him at every opportunity.
  • David did not come from an aristocratic background. He came from a family of shepherds, people who worked everyday to make a living from the land. His father lived in an obscure village and did not have a royal lineage or powerful position and David wasn’t the oldest son.
  • David was just a boy when anointed king. He had no experience in leading anything but sheep. He was underestimated by everyone from Goliath to his own brothers. Some even verbalized the lack of respect for him.
  • David had priority problems that put him in a terrible position when raising his sons and when he stayed behind from the army and found himself involved with another man’s wife.

David did not become a great leader because he lacked limitations and Saul’s leadership didn’t fail strictly based on his limitations. Also, when both men received the title of king and became the undisputed leader, their limitations and issues didn’t disappear. Effective leaders are not without limitations, it is how they handle them and their attitude toward them that allows them to become effective.

One other item about these men’s leadership potential, did you notice that Saul’s issues were more character based and David’s limiting issues were more circumstance based? Like Saul, when David’s issue was character based he had major failures. In the process of becoming a great, God-blessed leader, character issues are more debilitating than circumstances.

Have you ever evaluated what limitations may be holding you back from becoming the effective leader God designed you to be? How are you dealing with both the circumstantial and character issues that are limiting your leadership effectiveness?

Become a builder like Barnabus ~ Greg Laurie

For instance, there was Joseph, the one the apostles nicknamed Barnabas (which means "Son of Encouragement"). He was from the tribe of Levi and came from the island of Cyprus.
— Acts 4:36

Acts 9 tells us that it was Barnabas who brought the newly converted Paul to the apostles in Jerusalem. The name Barnabas means "son of encouragement," and his actions reveal that he was an encouraging guy. We all know a Barnabas—the one who always has an encouraging word. When you are down, that is the person you want to call, because you know he or she will encourage you.

You may not be called to preach and teach like Paul did, but you can be an encourager like Barnabas was. You can do your part, because right now, you probably know someone who needs some encouragement—someone who has failed in life, someone who is hurting, or someone who is a brand-new believer. They need someone like you to stand in the gap. You don't have to know every verse in the Bible. You don't have to have the answer to every theological question. You just need to be a real Christian who can show them what it is like to live in the real world.

You can be a Barnabas, an encourager, because everybody needs encouragement. And everyone needs help. Everyone stumbles and falls in some way, shape, or form. Everyone has their down days, even the heroes of life. They may wake up on the wrong side of the bed, be feeling a little cranky, or don't always have the perfect answer for every question. They are human like you are. They need someone to just encourage them. So be an encourager.

Thank God for the Barnabases of the world who help those in need—and all of us need it at one time or another. These are the unsung heroes who play an important part in the lives of great men and women of God.

Righteousness, Peace, And Joy! ~ Kay Arthur

(Last Call will continue the remainder on the Jeremiah Series, as the transcripts are complete. In the meantime, we are pleased to start with Kay Arthur's teachings on Life in the Spirit)

LIFE IN THE SPIRIT SERIES

Does life ever seem ugh to you? I mean no energy, no dynamic, no joy, and you think it.s just same ole, same ole, day in and day out. Well what are you going to do my friend? What we.re going to do is we.re going to look at life in the Spirit. We.re beginning a new series and I believe that it.s going to give you the joy and the purpose that you are looking for.

I.m excited because you and I are going to study life in the Spirit. Now it.s going to be a little bit different than we usually do. Because we usually go through a book of the Bible, chapter by chapter and verse by verse so that you know that and you get a study guide that goes along with it and you mark the text.

Well this time, what we.re going to do is we.re going to be all over the Bible because we want to see what it means to have life in the Spirit. It.s so essential. And when I look around and watch people I think, hey, hey, wait a minute; this is not the life that God intended for you to live as a child of God.

You need to understand about life in the Spirit. Because the fruit of the Spirit, is love and its joy and its peace and its goodness, and its faithfulness, etc. (Galatians 5:22) There.s a nine-fold aspect to the fruit of the Spirit. And when we.re walking in the Spirit, when we.re living in the power of the Holy Spirit, then that fruit is present in our lives.

So let.s take an adventure in the Word of God. And what I want to do is I want to begin by taking you back to Genesis. Some people say Kay, you can.t teach at a conference or anyplace without going from Genesis to Revelation. And that.s what we.re going to do. We.re going to go from Genesis to Revelation because I want you to see what God intended. I want you to understand what the Spirit is all about, who the Spirit really is.

And so I want us to go to Genesis, chapter 1. Now this is what I would suggest that you do. If you.re able, that you would mark the text as we go along. And remember, every time we come to a reference about God, we usually put a triangle because what we.re looking at is the three-fold or the triune part of God. That there is God the Father, that there is God the Spirit, and there is God, the Son.

And so what I do is I take one bottom half, one corner of this triangle and when I take that corner of the triangle and I.m marking the Holy Spirit, I underline Spirit, come up and then put a little cloud around it. And I would suggest that what you do is that you mark the Holy Spirit this way. I do it in purple. You can do it in any color you want and then I color it yellow, because yellow.s my color for God. And remember you and I are studying the Bible inductively. Inductively means hey, we.re going to the Word of God ourselves. We.re not just going to listen to a message. We.re not just going to sit back and relax, but we.re going to interact with the Word of God.

And when you open this Bible what I want you to understand is that these are the actual words of God. This is not an ordinary book. These are not man.s words. This is not man thinking what God thought and then writing it down. But it is a product of God breathing into man the very words that God wanted to use.

So if you have like a King James Version or you have a New American Standard or you have an English Standard Version, you actually have a word for word translation. And it.s word for word, word from the language that it was written in, in Hebrew or Aramaic or Greek and then put into English in the closest word possible. So you and I are looking at the very words of God.

When we go to Genesis chapter 1 in verse 1 we see the first mention of the Holy Spirit. Let.s read it. In Genesis chapter 1 it says, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. And the earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep; and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.”

The first time that you meet the Holy Spirit you find energy. And this is what I want you to see. Sometimes we get so worn out in life. Life becomes ugh. Life becomes exhausting. But with the Spirit there is energy. Now I.m going to give you time, we.re going to move slow enough so that you can make sure that you.re looking in your Bible, if you.re able to look in your Bible at this point, and that you are actually marking. So you mark the Spirit of God and you find out that the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.

And then it says in verse 3, “Then God said, „Let there be light; and there was light..” Listen, when God speaks it happens and you can know this; that as you study this book, that what you are reading has come from God. And God cannot lie. God is truth. Remember Jesus said, the Father and I are one. (John 10:30) And He said I am the way, I am the truth, and I am the life and no one comes to the Father, but by Me. (John 14:6)

Now when you look at this, what you.re seeing is you.re seeing the triune God. You.re seeing God the Father, you.re seeing God the Holy Spirit and you.re seeing God the Son. You say, but I don.t see Him here. That.s right. You do not see Him there, but when you go on and you get to Genesis chapter 1, verse 26, it says, “Then God said, „Let Us make man in Our image according to Our likeness and let them, man, male and female, rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky, over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth..”

You say, but where is Jesus? It says, “Then God said let Us,” Us, plural. Well, when you go to John chapter 1 this is what He says. And this is very important because the gospel of John was written much later than the other gospels. And it was written for the purpose of establishing very clearly the fact that Jesus was God, that He is One with the Father. But in John chapter 1 in verse 1, it says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

And you say but it doesn.t say that it was Jesus. Well let me go on and it says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. And He was in the beginning with God.” All right, now when you come to John 1:14 it says, “And the Word,” the logos, “became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.”

Now, in John chapter 1, verse 3, it says, “All things came into being by Him,” by the Word, by Jesus. So He was there. And it says, “And apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being.” So Jesus was there. The Father was there and the Holy Spirit was there.

This is where we meet the Holy Spirit. This is where we meet the triune God in the very first words of the Word of God. „Cause God wants us to understand this principle. And you see it all the way through the scriptures. And we.re going to see that happen. Now, I don.t mark every reference to God and I don.t mark every reference to Jesus because you would be marking too much in your Bible and it would be too confusing to look at. But I always mark every reference to the Holy Spirit.

And the reason that I do that, Beloved, is because the Holy Spirit is not mentioned that much and so you.re not going to mark up your Bible. But I want to tell you something. He.s not mentioned that much, but He is a very vital part. He is like the energy that you see in the Godhead.

And this is what we find in verse 1, that he is moving over the face of the waters. Then we go to Genesis, chapter 1 and verse 26 and what we see is when God said, “Then let Us make man in Our image and in Our likeness,” then we find out that we have the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. In verse 27 it says, “And God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.”

So when He talks about man, many times in the Word of God, He.s talking about man generically. He.s talking about mankind. That.s what you and I need to understand. Well, as we look at this but I want you to know this: that God intends for you to be in His image. God intends for you to come to know Him in such a way, and to have the Holy Spirit in you so that you are reflecting to others what God is like.

You say, but nobody.s seen God at any time. You.re right, but because of our connection with Him, through the Holy Spirit, then we are to be able to walk so that when people see us they see the fruit the Spirit. They see the love and the joy and the peace and the faithfulness, and the goodness, and the kindness and they see the self-control. (Galatians 5:22) They see the nine-fold fruit of the Spirit in your life and they get to see a glimpse of how God is and how He treats people and how He cares about people and how He handles the situations of life.

So, from here I want us to go to Genesis chapter 2 because I want you to understand very carefully what happens. He.s created man in His image. And man is the vice-regent down here on earth. It goes on to say in verse 28 that God blessed them. He said be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it. God made man to be His vice-regent so to speak, down here on earth. God made man to be His CEO, His chief executive officer, if you want to look at it in business terms, down here on earth and to rule underneath Him. But you know what? Something happened. And you say, what happened? Well, we.ll look at it when we come back after this important announcement.

Welcome back my friend. Let.s get on with life in the Spirit. In Genesis chapter 1 we see that God creates everything. We see in verse 26 and 27 that God creates man. And He creates man, male and female. And He createsman in His image. So that if you look at man, you should be able to see God. Now, what happens is in Genesis 1 He gives us the big picture.

And then what He does is He takes a telephoto lens and He zeros in on this creation and He wants us to understand something very important. In Genesis chapter 2, verse 7 it says then God formed man of the dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils, whew, get that, whew, He breathed into his nostrils the breath of life. If you can imagine in your mind what it would be like if you just had a glove, and you look at that red glove and this is like man. And what God does and this is such a good illustration, but God comes down and here.s this man in His image that He.s forming and all of a sudden God Himself fills man and when He fills man then man has life. If you take the glove and you just lay it down on a table and you look at it, it can.t move. But if you put a hand into it then that glove is able to move. And this is what happens with man. God breathes into man the breath of life and man becomes a living soul. This is what happened on that day.

And when He puts him into that Garden of Eden this is what He tells him and it.s important that you understand this. In Genesis chapter 2, in verse 16: “And the Lord God commanded the man saying, „From any tree of the garden you may eat freely, but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of that tree you shall die.”

Now what gives man his life? Well what gives man his life, and you take the glove illustration again, is the fact that God is in man. All right, and He.s saying now look, if you eat of the fruit of that tree then you.re going to die. And I mean you.re going to have no life in you. Why? Listen carefully; God does not live in people that are sinners.

You say, but how do I ever become a saint? You say hey there.s no way I.ll ever become a saint. Oh, you just don.t know your Bible, because there is a way that you become a saint.

Well, what happens in Genesis chapter 3, Eve looks at that tree. The serpent comes into the garden. The serpent speaks to Eve. Eve listens to the serpent instead of listening to God. She takes the fruit of that tree. She eats it. She gives it to Adam and sin enters into the world. Now, in Genesis chapter 3 is where you see that. What happens as a result of that? The minute that they eat of the fruit of that tree, God moves out. There.s no longer the Spirit of life in them. The Holy Spirit is no longer in them. They are not in the image of God. So just imagine this red glove just laying flat because there.s no life in man anymore. Man runs, man hides. God comes to him in the garden and He says where are you?

And this is what I.m asking you, precious one. Where are you today? Are you like an empty glove, just lying around with no life, no energy, no strength, no joy, no nothing? It.s just ugh. And it.s ugh because God.s not in you. Or is it maybe, that God is in you and yet what you have done is you have said, You may be in me, but You.re not going to control me, not in this circumstance because I want to do what I want to do. O beloved, that is dangerous, as we will see.

But let.s move on and let.s see what happened to man. All right, remember man is now without life. He.s dead in his trespasses and sins. So let.s go to Ephesians chapter 2. In Ephesians chapter 2, verse 1 it says, “And you were dead in your trespasses and sins.” You say how did I get dead? I was born living. How did I get dead? Well you.re dead in the sense that the Spirit of God is not in you. You are made in God.s image, but that image is distorted and there.s no life in you. And so therefore, you are dead.

You say well, explain it a little bit more. Let.s go to Romans chapter 5, verse 12 and let me show you something. In Romans 5, verse 12 it says “Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world.” Now the one man that sin entered into the world by was Adam, because when Adam and Eve listened to the serpent in the garden and they took of the fruit of the tree, then what happened was when they cohabitated, they produced little sinners, because Genesis chapter 5 says, “Then Adam brought forth a son in his image.” (5:3) Remember Adam was created in God.s image. Think of the glove now, filled with a hand, the hand of God. But when Adam sinned then as a sinner, what did he reproduce? He reproduced just more little sinners. So through one man sin entered into the world.

Now, as result of that, (gasps) death comes. So by “one man sin entered into the world and death by sin,” no life, no life whatsoever. And so death by sin, so then death passed upon all men in that all have sinned. (Romans 5:12) So it could be that it is ugh in your life because you don.t have life. It could be that there is ugh in your life because God has come in, but you.re not really walking in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Now it says that when sin comes into the world then what happens, then you.re dead in your trespasses and sins you walk according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that works in the sons of disobedience. And you walk according to your lusts. You walk according to your mind. (Ephesians 2:1-3) And hey, apart from God, that is very dangerous.

Now, I want you to go to the very last mention of the Holy Spirit in the Word of God. And I want you to take you to Revelation chapter 20 in verse 6 it.s talking about those that never received Christ, never have life. And this is what it says: And those that don.t have part in the first resurrection, it says, over these, the second death has got them. In other words they are dead. They are born without life. They are born without God. They never receive God. And because they never receive God, then they stay dead in their trespasses and sins. And it.s called the second death. And you can go back and read about it in Revelation chapter 20. But in Revelation chapter 22, God doesn.t want man to stay that way. God doesn.t want your life to be ugh. God doesn.t want your life to be lifeless. God doesn.t want your life to be without energy and without purpose.

And so what happens? Well, the last mention of the Holy Spirit is in verse 17 of Revelation chapter 22, the very last book of the Bible, the very last chapter of the Bible. And this is what it says: “And the Spirit and the bride say, „Come.. And let the one who hears say, „Come.. And let the one who is thirsty come; and let the one who wishes to take the water of life come.” In other words, hey, are you thirsty? Are you longing for an energy, for a purpose? Are you longing for life? Then the Spirit of God is saying to you, “Come.” I want you to know what life in the Spirit is all about

Unrepentant heart ~ Bob Caldwell

ARROGANT SCORN IN THE FACE OF LOVE

Hosea 6:1-9:17

6:1 Come, and let us return to the LORD; For He has torn, but He will heal us; He has stricken, but He will bind us up.

7:10 And the pride of Israel testifies to his face But they do not return to the LORD their God, Nor seek Him for all this.

There could not be a more gracious call sent to a patently wicked people than the one recorded for us here (6:1-3). God owed the nations of Israel nothing but judgment for their total violation of everything He had created them to be as a nation. Never before or since has God chosen and gifted a nation to so fully represent Him in the world. To Israel alone there were given the Oracles of God, the Tabernacle, and the Temple as a place of worship where God manifested Himself like no other place on Earth. No other nation has ever been declared by God to be His bride, daughter, or son. These terms of love were uniquely given to this nation formed from those who had lived as slaves in ancient Egypt.

From the lowest people in the eyes of the world's ancient nations had come a nation that was blessed beyond any other nation in human history. In spite of all the blessings they received, Israel was unequalled in how they threw themselves into sin and rebellion against God. We clearly see this in Hosea's prophetic descriptions (6:4-9:17). Consider just a few descriptive words from this section. They had dealt treacherously with God, were bloodthirsty thieves, had done lewd and horrible things in the Temple, were adulterers, were full of pride and confidence in the help of man but with no confidence in God. They had sown seeds of destruction that had pulled them into a whirlwind of disaster.

In spite of all this insane rebellion against everything good God had called them to be, He still wanted them! The destruction He had begun to bring upon them was His last effort to save them from themselves. Pain, He hoped, would awaken them to their folly. If they awoke, He promised to heal them, revive them, and raise them up to live before Him in ever-growing knowledge and intimacy with Him.

Obviously, Israel has not been the only ones to find themselves in such a situation. In some way, we have all played with the same fire. We have all taken as nothing the privilege of our creation and life, acting as if our life originated in ourselves. We suppress the sin that our own conscience condemns, and we consider the cross of Christ only for those "other really bad sinners," if we consider it necessary at all. And we scorn God's call to repent from our self-imposed delusions about Him, sin, judgment, and ourselves. Let not any of us think that Israel stands alone in judgment. Our disregard for being called from darkness to light, from slaves to freedom, from Satan to God, will sow our own seeds of judgment.

Choose to repent. If we do, healing, revival, and the abundance of God are still offered to all who will.

NKJV BIBLE TEXT

Hosea 6:1-9:17

A Call to Repentance

1 Come, and let us return to the LORD;
For He has torn, but He will heal us;
He has stricken, but He will bind us up.

2 After two days He will revive us;
On the third day He will raise us up,
That we may live in His sight.

3 Let us know,
Let us pursue the knowledge of the LORD.
His going forth is established as the morning;
He will come to us like the rain,
Like the latter and former rain to the earth.

Impenitence of Israel and Judah

4 "O Ephraim, what shall I do to you?
O Judah, what shall I do to you?
For your faithfulness is like a morning cloud,
And like the early dew it goes away.

5 Therefore I have hewn them by the prophets,
I have slain them by the words of My mouth;
And your judgments are like light that goes forth.

6 For I desire mercy and not sacrifice,
And the knowledge of God more than burnt offerings.

7 "But like men they transgressed the covenant;
There they dealt treacherously with Me.

8 Gilead is a city of evildoers
And defiled with blood.

9 As bands of robbers lie in wait for a man,
So the company of priests murder on the way to Shechem;
Surely they commit lewdness.

10 I have seen a horrible thing in the house of Israel:
There is the harlotry of Ephraim;
Israel is defiled.

11 Also, O Judah, a harvest is appointed for you,
When I return the captives of My people.

Hosea 7

1 "When I would have healed Israel,
Then the iniquity of Ephraim was uncovered,
And the wickedness of Samaria.
For they have committed fraud;
A thief comes in;
A band of robbers takes spoil outside.

2 They do not consider in their hearts
That I remember all their wickedness;
Now their own deeds have surrounded them;
They are before My face.

3 They make a king glad with their wickedness,
And princes with their lies.

4 "They are all adulterers.
Like an oven heated by a baker
He ceases stirring the fire after kneading the dough,
Until it is leavened.

5 In the day of our king
Princes have made him sick, inflamed with wine;
He stretched out his hand with scoffers.

6 They prepare their heart like an oven,
While they lie in wait;
Their baker sleeps all night;
In the morning it burns like a flaming fire.

7 They are all hot, like an oven,
And have devoured their judges;
All their kings have fallen.
None among them calls upon Me.

8 "Ephraim has mixed himself among the peoples;
Ephraim is a cake unturned.

9 Aliens have devoured his strength,
But he does not know it;
Yes, gray hairs are here and there on him,
Yet he does not know it.

10 And the pride of Israel testifies to his face,
But they do not return to the LORD their God,
Nor seek Him for all this.

Futile Reliance on the Nations

11 "Ephraim also is like a silly dove, without sense
They call to Egypt,
They go to Assyria.

12 Wherever they go, I will spread My net on them;
I will bring them down like birds of the air;
I will chastise them
According to what their congregation has heard.

13 "Woe to them, for they have fled from Me!
Destruction to them,
Because they have transgressed against Me!
Though I redeemed them,
Yet they have spoken lies against Me.

14 They did not cry out to Me with their heart
When they wailed upon their beds.
"They assemble together for grain and new wine,
They rebel against Me;

15 Though I disciplined and strengthened their arms,
Yet they devise evil against Me;

16 They return, but not to the Most High;
They are like a treacherous bow.
Their princes shall fall by the sword
For the cursings of their tongue.
This shall be their derision in the land of Egypt.

Hosea 8

The Apostasy of Israel

1 "Set the trumpet to your mouth!
He shall come like an eagle against the house of the LORD,
Because they have transgressed My covenant
And rebelled against My law.

2 Israel will cry to Me,
' My God, we know You!'

3 Israel has rejected the good;
The enemy will pursue him.

4 "They set up kings, but not by Me;
They made princes, but I did not acknowledge them.
From their silver and gold
They made idols for themselves
That they might be cut off.

5 Your calf is rejected, O Samaria!
My anger is aroused against them
How long until they attain to innocence?

6 For from Israel is even this:
A workman made it, and it is not God;
But the calf of Samaria shall be broken to pieces.

7 "They sow the wind,
And reap the whirlwind.
The stalk has no bud;
It shall never produce meal.
If it should produce,
Aliens would swallow it up.

8 Israel is swallowed up;
Now they are among the Gentiles
Like a vessel in which is no pleasure.

9 For they have gone up to Assyria,
Like a wild donkey alone by itself;
Ephraim has hired lovers.

10 Yes, though they have hired among the nations,
Now I will gather them;
And they shall sorrow a little,
Because of the burden of the king of princes.

11 "Because Ephraim has made many altars for sin,
They have become for him altars for sinning.

12 I have written for him the great things of My law,
But they were considered a strange thing.

13 For the sacrifices of My offerings they sacrifice flesh and eat it,
But the LORD does not accept them.
Now He will remember their iniquity and punish their sins.
They shall return to Egypt.

14 "For Israel has forgotten his Maker,
And has built temples;
Judah also has multiplied fortified cities;
But I will send fire upon his cities,
And it shall devour his palaces."

Hosea 9

Judgment of Israel's Sin

1 Do not rejoice, O Israel, with joy like other peoples,
For you have played the harlot against your God.
You have made love for hire on every threshing floor.

2 The threshing floor and the winepress
Shall not feed them,
And the new wine shall fail in her.

3 They shall not dwell in the LORD's land,
But Ephraim shall return to Egypt,
And shall eat unclean things in Assyria.

4 They shall not offer wine offerings to the LORD,
Nor shall their sacrifices be pleasing to Him.
It shall be like bread of mourners to them;
All who eat it shall be defiled.
For their bread shall be for their own life;
It shall not come into the house of the LORD.

5 What will you do in the appointed day,
And in the day of the feast of the LORD?

6 For indeed they are gone because of destruction.
Egypt shall gather them up;
Memphis shall bury them.
Nettles shall possess their valuables of silver;
Thorns shall be in their tents.

7 The days of punishment have come;
The days of recompense have come.
Israel knows!
The prophet is a fool,
The spiritual man is insane,
Because of the greatness of your iniquity and great enmity.

8 The watchman of Ephraim is with my God;
But the prophet is a fowler's snare in all his ways
Enmity in the house of his God.

9 They are deeply corrupted,
As in the days of Gibeah.
He will remember their iniquity;
He will punish their sins.

10 "I found Israel
Like grapes in the wilderness;
I saw your fathers
As the firstfruits on the fig tree in its first season.
But they went to Baal Peor,
And separated themselves to that shame;
They became an abomination like the thing they loved.

11 As for Ephraim, their glory shall fly away like a bird
No birth, no pregnancy, and no conception!

12 Though they bring up their children,
Yet I will bereave them to the last man.
Yes, woe to them when I depart from them!

13 Just as I saw Ephraim like Tyre, planted in a pleasant place,
So Ephraim will bring out his children to the murderer."

14 Give them, O LORD
What will You give?
Give them a miscarrying womb
And dry breasts!

15 "All their wickedness is in Gilgal,
For there I hated them.
Because of the evil of their deeds
I will drive them from My house;
I will love them no more.
All their princes are rebellious.

16 Ephraim is stricken,
Their root is dried up;
They shall bear no fruit.
Yes, were they to bear children,
I would kill the darlings of their womb."

17 My God will cast them away,
Because they did not obey Him;
And they shall be wanderers among the nations.

STUDY NOTES

Hosea 6:1-9:17

v. 1 let us return to the LORD ? An appearance of repentance on the part of Israel. But judging from the words of the LORD that follows, Israel's words are superficial and shallow.

v. 2 After two days ? Israel's hope was that their time of chastisement would be brief.

v. 3 know ? yada (Heb.) intimate knowledge from personal experience (Gen. 3:5, 4:1)

like the rain ? an expectation that the LORD's coming would be refreshing and revitalizing like the rain to the earth

v. 4 like a morning cloud?early dew ? A depiction of Israel's faithfulness toward God being like a pleasant but temporary time of refreshment.

v. 6 mercy and not sacrifice ? Mercy (checed, Heb.), meaning goodness, kindness, faithfulness. The LORD prefers His people walk in goodness and faithfulness rather than just living in sin and then offering up sacrifices. Jesus quoted this phrase twice in the book of Matthew (9:13, 12:7).

knowledge of God more than burnt offerings - Israel sacrificed animals to God, but they never gave themselves to Him as a living sacrifices (Rom. 12:1). They missed what God really wanted: a deep, close relationship with Him.

v. 7 transgressed the covenant ? An intentional disobedience of God's laws and breaking of the contract God had made with them.

treacherously ? bagad (Heb.) a deceitful act of betrayal

v. 8 Gilead ? Probably Ramoth-gilead beyond the Jordan. Gilead was a designated city of refuge where those who had accidentally killed someone could hide from persecution until their trial date and where the priests of Israel also lived (Deut. 4:43; Josh. 20:8, 21:13). This was meant to be a place of safety rather than bloodshed.

v. 9 company of priests murder ? A grievous picture of the so-called priests of God commissioned by wicked King Jeroboam to murder any who would try to cross the border of Israel into Judah to worship the LORD in the Jerusalem Temple.

Lewdness ? zimmah (Heb.) a wicked plan or heinous crime

v. 10 defiled ? tame (Heb.) to be foul, especially in a ceremonial or moral sense (contaminated), polluted

v. 11 harvest is appointed for you ? This phrase seems to have a double meaning. 1.) a harvest of punishment. 2.) When the people of God came back into the land after the Babylonian exile, they mainly settled in the area of Judah. The harvest of returned exiles was mainly for Judah, not for Israel.

Hosea 7

v. 1 When I would have healed Israel, then ? Just as the LORD would be willing to forgive and restore, more sin would surface.

Ephraim ? Because Ephraim was the prominent tribe of Israel and now prominent in sin, the LORD speaks of them as representing all of Israel.

Samaria ? the capitol of the northern kingdom of Israel

v. 2 They do not consider in their hearts ? The plight of every sinner. Israel did not really believe that the LORD was watching them and would repay them for every wicked act.

v. 3 a king?princes ? A reference to wicked King Jeroboam of the northern kingdom of Israel and his princes.

v. 4 Like an oven heated ? always aflame with lust

Until it is leavened ? Leaven is metaphorical language for sin in the scriptures (Ex. 12:15, Lev. 23:17, 1 Cor. 5:6-8, Gal. 5:9).

v. 5 the day of our king ? Probably Jeroboam's coronation day or his birthday. Either would easily turn into a drunken party.

scoffers ? latsats (Heb.) to scorn, make mouths at, talk arrogantly

v. 6 like an oven ? more metaphorical language, meaning hot with lust and full of sin

v. 7 their judges?kings have fallen ? As the history of the kingdom of Israel continued, corruption ruled the courts and one royal house was murdered to make way for another.

v. 8 a cake unturned ? Like a worthless pancake burned on one side and raw on the other.

v. 9 Aliens ? zuwr (Heb.) a foreigner, stranger; likely used here as a term to describe foreign women (i.e. to commit adultery with)

gray hairs?Yet he does not know it ? He grew old before his time but didn't realize his strength was gone and death was nearer than he thought.

v. 10 pride of Israel testifies to his face ? His arrogance testifies against him.

v. 11 like a silly dove ? An equivalent to our modern-day expression "bird brain." Israel's resolution to seek help from the pagan nations rather than the LORD was futile, senseless, and silly.

Egypt?Assyria ? These are the neighboring nations Israel called upon for help and deliverance when the LORD sent judgment via the invading Babylonians.

v. 12 My net ? The LORD reminds Israel that He is the skilled predator who hunts them, rather than the invading nations. And they will not escape His trap.

chastise them ? A reminder that what Israel was experiencing is actually a punishment from God and not merely the invasion of a foreign militia by the will of man.

v. 13 Woe ? owy (Heb.) A lamentation or passionate cry of grief and despair. This term is found in the Bible most often in conjunction with God's judgment.

v. 14 they wailed upon their beds ? a depiction of sleepless anxiety, depression, or sickness

They assemble together for grain and new wine ? The people of Israel gathered in pagan temples to seek the favor and blessings of their idols rather than calling upon the LORD.

v. 15 disciplined ? yacar (Heb.) to instruct through chastening, discipline or admonishment

strengthened ? chazaq (Heb.) cure, help, repair, fortify

Yet they devise evil against Me ? The LORD sought to build up and make His people strong by chastening them. Yet Israel continued to rebel and seek help from other gods and other nations.

v. 16 a treacherous bow ? A bow such as this cannot shoot a straight line and always misses the mark; a picture of the crooked character of Israel.

derision ? la`ag (Heb.) mocking, scoffing, scorn, stammering. The people of Egypt will laugh at them.

Hosea 8

v. 1 Set the trumpet to your mouth ? the sounding of an alarm of an impending attack (Hosea 5:8, Joel 2:1, Amos 3:6)

He shall come like an eagle ? referring to the king of Assyria, who was about to invade Israel

v. 4 set up kings, but not by Me ? The kings of the northern kingdom of Israel were established outside of God's will because they were not from the royal line of David. After Jeroboam II, five kings ruled over Israel in 13 years. Three of these kings seized the throne through treachery and violence (2 Kings 15:8-30).

That they might be cut off ? Israel brought about her own destruction by her idol worship and rejecting the LORD's authority.

v. 5 Your calf ? King Jeroboam (930-909 BC) set up idolatrous golden calves to be worshipped by the people of Israel.

Samaria ? the capitol of the Northern Kingdom of Israel

v. 7 sow the wind?reap the whirlwind ? An expression used even today illustrating the negative side of the sowing and reaping process of life. The point here is that the consequence for Israel's sowing to idolatry will be a reaping of judgment from God in the whirlwind of Assyria attacking them.

The stalk has no bud ? What Israel has sown will have no fruit, harvest, or reward.

Aliens ? the Assyrians

v. 8 they are among the Gentiles ? Israel's choice to reject God's laws and precepts reduced her to the level and status of all the other nations.

Like a vessel ? like a worthless and unusable container

v. 9 Like a wild donkey ? The wild donkey is an independent, untamable, and obstinate beast.

hired lovers ? referring to Israel's tribute to and alliance with other nations for protection (v. 10)

v. 10 the burden of the king of princes ? Israel will soon bear the burden of paying tax and tribute to the great King Pul (the Babylonian name for Tiglath-pileser III) of Assyria whose princes were the kings of many other nations (2 Kings 15:19, 20).

v. 11 many altars for sin ? The many altars to various idols which had been established in Israel at this time.

v. 12 considered a strange thing ? God's Law, which was clearly established for His people in writing, has now become and unknown and foreign concept.

v. 13 return to Egypt ? Because Israel had turned to Egypt for help, as a punishment she will become enslaved again in Egypt as foretold in Deuteronomy 28:68. A bitter judgment that reverses Israel's once-great deliverance from Egypt.

v. 14 Judah also ? The southern kingdom of Judah, though less idolatrous than Israel, betrayed lack of faith in the LORD by trusting more in its palaces and fortresses than in Him; instead of making peace with God for protection, Judah multiplied human defenses.

Hosea 9

v. 1 love for hire on every threshing floor ? An allegory of Israel's spiritual condition. The threshing floor at harvest time was a man's world. The threshers would feast at the end of a hard day's work and stay all night to protect the grain. Prostitutes were common visitors in these places.

v. 2 new wine ? A fresh crop of grapes. This speaks of a recent harvest.

v. 3 shall not dwell in the LORD'S land ? As part of God's judgment upon unfaithful Israel she will be removed from the Promised Land and sent into captivity in other lands.

unclean things ? This was food the Hebrew people will be forced to eat as slaves in Assyria and food that would be considered unlawful according to the Law of Moses (Eze. 4:13, Dan. 1:8, Acts 10:14).

v. 4 bread of mourners ? To eat bread in a house where there had been a death would make one ceremonially unclean according to the Law of Moses (Num. 19:11, 13; Hag. 2:13).

v. 5 What will you do in the appointed day ? What will Israel do on the appointed holy days and feast days set apart for the worship of the LORD when they are in captivity in a foreign land?

v. 6 Memphis ? the capitol of Northern Egypt

Nettles ? qimmowsh (Heb.) a picture of judgment and desolation

v. 7 Israel knows! ? Divine sarcasm. God is mocking Israel's arrogance, thinking that she knows right from wrong without the LORD's guidance.

The prophet is a fool, The spiritual man is insane ? This is what the people of Israel were saying about Hosea. When things in Israel prospered and everyone was happy, Hosea announced God's coming judgment and called for repentance. They thought he was a crazy fool.

v. 8 The watchman ? A way of describing the role of a national prophet who warns the people of God's impending judgment (Eze. 3:17-21).

fowler's snare ? A trap set for a bird. This figure of speech is used to express traps that were set for the prophet of God wherever he turned.

Enmity ? mastemah (Heb.) hatred, animosity, hostility

v. 9 As in the days of Gibeah ? Judges 19 describes horrific crimes of perversion and violence in Israel in the days of the Judges that took place in Gibeah. Hosea says that his day was just as bad as those days in Israel.

v. 10 Like grapes in the wilderness ? like a refreshing and delightful delicacy found in a barren place

Baal Peor ? A comparison to Israel's sins of immorality in the early days of her sojourn when Balaam helped Balak bring down God's people into sin at Baal Peor (Num. 24:25-25:5). Baal Peor means Baal of Peor. Baal was a Moabite (the deity worshipped at Peor with sexually immoral rites)

abomination ? shiqquwts (Heb.) disgusting; a detestable thing or idol

v. 11 No birth, no pregnancy, and no conception ? Your children will die at birth or perish in the womb or never even be conceived.

v. 13 like Tyre ? The Phoenician city pleasantly planted on the Mediterranean coast. Yet she was completely leveled by the judgment of God because of her arrogance and rebellion against the LORD (Eze. 26:3-15; 28:1-10).

v. 14 give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts ? This was Hosea's prayer for mercy. Knowing of the coming judgment, he prayed, LORD, give them few children so less children will have to face the horrors of Your coming judgment.

v. 15 Gilgal ? The first site of an Israelite camp west of the Jordan, east of Jericho, here Samuel was judge, and Saul was made king. Later used for illicit worship.

v. 17 they shall be wanderers among the nations ? This is exactly what the LORD warned them about when they first entered the Promised Land and received God's Law (Deut. 28:58-63).
