Getting it Straight

Obama, the Jewish State, and the Holocaust : Dry Bones cartoon.
Relations between America's new President and the Jewish State are rapidly deteriorating. To understand why, it would be helpful to take a close and analytical look at Obama’s Cairo speech. Such an analysis was done the day after the speech. It was written by Morton A. Klein, president of the ZOA (Zionist Organization of America).

Could this important document be the reason that Obama's meeting with American Jewish leaders left the ZOA out in the cold?!

Time To Wake Up By Chuck Smith - Part 2

but the life he lives he lives to God~Daily Light

July 22
MORNING

The death he died he died to sin, once for all, but the life he lives he lives to God.

He . . . was numbered with the transgressors.--Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many.--He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.--By a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.--He holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues forever. Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.--While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.

Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, so as to live for the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human passions but for the will of God.

Rom. 6:10; Isa. 53:12; Heb. 9:28; 1 Pet. 2:24; Heb. 10:14; Heb. 7:24, 25; Rom. 5:8, 9; 1 Pet. 4:1, 2

EVENING

Keep yourselves in the love of God.

"Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing."

The fruit of the Spirit is love.--"By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father's commandments and abide in his love."--Whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected.

"This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you."--God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.--God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.

No car? No beep? No attendant? no gas? no XP?

So how's your day been today?
Today has been one of those days.

I woke up about 4:30 a.m. to pray and get ready for my day. I drove over to Flordia Hospital to pray for a friend before surgery. That part went great. But when I went back to the parking garage I could not find my car. After several prayers and several trips over the course of several levels in a hot garage, clicking the lock button on my key chain as I went in hopes that the car would beep to let me know where it was, I surrendered.

I then set about trying to find someone to help me. After several discussions with several different people in several different places, I finally found someone willing to drive me around in a golf cart. It turned out the car was pretty much where I thought it was, but the key chain didn't evoke a beep until I was literally standing behind the vehicle (my escort told me he thinks it needs a new battery- I didn't know they took batteries!).

My escort told me that many people found the car garage confusing on foot, and that I shouldn't feel bad. I then called brother Bill Cureton to let him know I wouldn't be back in time to lead the men's Bible study, and in my rush to get back to the church forgot that I had noticed earlier the car needed gas.

Oooops! Without warning the car engine stopped humming and the vehicle quit. Fortunately I was now on 405 near a few gas stations and my lovely wife answered the phone and agreed to fill up the gas can and come resuce me.

Oh, but the gas can had water in it. A trip to Wal-mart to get a gas can? Fortunately brother Brian Barnett was within walking distance of his home and he had a gas can with gas in it. Before you know it my wife and mother (who is here visiting from Texas this week) were on their way to me with a gas can and some gas.

Oh, did I mention that I had an appointment with our church copier guy Mike that I was about to miss?

Fortunately, brother Bill entertained him and he agreed to wait for me, and show me how to scan documents to my computer. I forgot to mention to him my laptop had Vista, and it turned out no XP operating system meant no ability to scan documents to my computer.

But Mike was able to show me how to scan to the church computer, and I can always transfer documents from there to a flash drive and then to my computer.

Oh, did I mention that the copier feed hasn't been working right, and Mike, our copier guy couldn't get it to work right? No worries, as brother Eric always says. Mike will be back tomorrow to replace the feeder,

I will leave here later and hopefully remember to put gas in brother Brian's gas can, and brother Bill will hopefully be able to come tomorrow to let Mike in since I will be in Melbourne early tomorrow.

Well, sorry to run, but I have to take care of a few things. Oh, I almost forgot, Good Morning Everyone!
I will bless the Lord at all times. His praise shall be continually in my mouth. (Ps. 34:1)
Yours in Him,

Pastor B.

Humerously.......... having worked for a few Pastors in my time.........., and been confidant to even more........., this occurs alot and they actually get out in a Pulpit and the majority of the time give a good Teaching or Sermon.

It is hard to let Pastors be people, because the congregations often want perfect Men of God. I know better. I have seen them at their best and their worst, the fact is Pastors are people too.

No better or worse than you and I.

Immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood~Jon Courson

July 22

… Immediately I conferred not with flesh and blood: Neither went I up to Jerusalem to them which were apostles before me; but I went into Arabia …

Galatians 1:16-17
In religious circles today, it’s cool to have a D.D. — a Doctorate of Divinity. Paul had a D.D. — a Doctorate of the Desert. He was in good company: Moses, John the Baptist, and Jesus all spent time in the desert.

So too, maybe for you these are dry, difficult days. It could be that God wants to reveal Jesus Christ to you in a fresh way, but for that to happen, He may do to you what He did to John the apostle when He sent him to Patmos ...

At about 100 years of age, John was exiled to Patmos, a rocky, barren, seemingly God-forsaken island. It was a tough situation, and no doubt John questioned what was going on. ‘I’m old,’ he could have said. ‘I’ve trusted in the Lord; I’m linked to Him; why this isolation?’

But then he saw Jesus Christ. John started writing, and 22 chapters later, the book of Revelation was completed.

When was revelation given to John?
When he was isolated on an island.

Perhaps you’re at a point where you’re saying, ‘Who can I talk to?’ or, ‘What counsel can I receive?’ — when in reality, the Lord may have you at this season on an island of isolation in order to give you a revelation of Jesus Christ. Don’t bemoan your condition.

Don’t bewail your situation. Worship the Lord. Draw close to Him. Be still — and you will see Him in ways you never could have had you been anywhere else.

An interview about my son Christopher’s passing~Greg Laurie

An interview about my son Christopher’s passing

July 22nd, 2009 Posted in Harvest Crusades, Pastor's corner, encouragement, family, stella | No Comments »

Hey everyone.

As you may know, this Friday, July 24, will mark the one-year anniversary of the passing of our firstborn son, Christopher, to heaven. I appreciate all of your prayers, and I plan on writing about this in a day or so.

Here is an interview that my son Jonathan and I recently did with Dan Wooding of the ASSIST News Service. It sums up where we are at during at this time in our lives.

The agony and joy of Greg Laurie

He talks about the tragic death of his son Christopher; his younger son, Jonathan, shares movingly about how he recommitted his life to Christ because of the death of his brother.

By Dan Wooding

Founder of ASSIST Ministries

SANTA ANA, CA (ANS) — Thursday, July 24, 2008 was the most devastating day of Greg Laurie’s life. The unimaginable happened when his son Christopher, 33, was killed in a tragic car accident on the 91 freeway on his way to work as art director of Harvest Christian Fellowship in Riverside, California, where Greg is the senior pastor.

Now, almost a year from the tragedy, Greg Laurie agreed to talk about his heartbreak and his younger son, Jonathan Laurie, revealed how the car accident that took his brother transformed his life – for good!

Both father and son came into the studios of Southern California’s KWVE 107.9 FM to talk with me for my Front Page Radio program.

I began by asking Greg to relive that terrible moment when he found out about the accident.

“It’s been almost a year now, Dan, and it was the most devastating experience of my life,” he said. “In fact, of all the bad experiences I’ve had — and I’ve had a few – none came even come close to what this was like. It’s the news no parent ever wants to hear you never expect to hear it.”

How did he first hear about the accident?

Greg said, “It was really strange the way I found out. My wife was leading a Bible study for Christopher’s wife Brittany and her mom. I was babysitting my granddaughter Stella. Brittany mentioned that she’d called Christopher and he’d not responded. Then I got a call from the church. They were asking, ‘Where’s Christopher?’

“So I called him and he didn’t answer; I then sent a text to him saying, ‘Where are you?’ Again, he didn’t answer. Then, from that point on, we started making calls to try and find out where he had gone. After about 45 minutes, we knew something was not right, we didn’t know what.

“Obviously we were praying; we were concerned and worried. Then, Don McClure, a pastor friend, showed up at my house and said, ‘Christopher’s been in an accident.” But he wouldn’t tell me the extent of it. I was told that some of the pastors from our church were going to come and talk to me. At this point I knew it was bad, but I was still hoping that it was not fatal.”

Greg said that when the pastors from his church arrived, one of them told him, “Christopher is with the Lord!”

Greg closed his eyes and told me, “When I heard that, it was like time stood still and the air was sucked out of the room. I couldn’t comprehend what I had just heard, and it really was, in many ways, incomprehensible. It was so hard.

“I have to say that although it was devastating and crushing, and I fell to the ground weeping, the Lord was there with me. I sensed His presence and His peace and I have never, for a moment, doubted that Christopher’s in heaven.”

I then asked Greg how his wife Cathe responded to the shocking news.

“She wept and she may have screamed. I don’t remember,” he said. “Brittany was crying also, as we all got the news at the same time. We were all crying. But we were also praying at the same time, saying things like, ‘Oh Lord, we look to you. We call on you.’”

Greg went on to say, “How could anyone survive such news if they didn’t know God? I can’t imagine trying to deal with this: without one’s faith in Christ; without the presence of the Lord; without Christian friends surrounding you and praying; knowing what to say and, hopefully, knowing what not to say,” he said. “We were surrounded by some wonderful godly people that helped us through those first few moments, those first few hours and the first few days.”

I told Greg that for anyone, this was so traumatic, but because he was so well-known in Southern California and across the world, this must have made it even more difficult to cope with. I wondered if he had thought about just giving up and retreating from the world for the time being.

“Well, you know one thinks about retreating but, really, you want to be around the people you love. You want to hear their words of reassurance,” said Greg. “I was surprised at how public it was, not only in the Christian community, but it was on the front page of the local newspaper with the headline, ‘Son of evangelist killed.’ To read those words in print, though you know it’s true, and see a photograph of your son — that was really painful.

“Then people were talking about it and it was on the radio and TV news. Of course, it was an auto accident, so it was a very horrific thing.”

Greg said that despite it all, it began changing his attitude to people.

“I gained a new compassion for people who have lost children,” he said. “When a celebrity dies, everyone talks about it and people opine on it. But, I’ll tell you that every one of these people that die have a mom and a dad and they have a family. It’s devastating for them. I looked at the way some people spoke about it — so matter of factly — and I had to say to myself, ‘You know, that’s my son they’re talking about.’

“But then there were many believers that said such sweet things. My blog site was inundated with messages. I had some 15,000 messages on my blog. I, frankly, have never read all of them, but I’ve read many of them and they were very comforting to me. I still go back to them and read them and they have encouraged me along with the prayers that people offered.

“Here it is, almost a year later, and I’d like to say its all better, Dan. I feel fantastic and you know there are moments when everything aligns in my mind and my heart. I think that Christopher’s in heaven and he’s happier than he’s ever been and that I’m going to see him again. It’s glorious and I have peace and even a bit of joy. Then, five minutes later, a memory is triggered by something and the pain of missing him comes right back.

“Last night, I had dreams about him again and in them I’m having conversations with him. Usually, in my dreams, I’m with him and then he’s suddenly gone. He disappears. In one dream I had, while I was talking to him, I reached out to and he disappeared. So you can’t stop your subconscious from processing these things. It is still very painful but the Lord has been with us. We have the Lord, we have our friends, we have our faith, we have our hope for the future of reunion, we have our memories of yesterday and we have today. And today, we want to try to the best of our ability to glorify God through this and try to minister to others who are hurting.

“I’ve come into contact with many people who have lost loved ones, especially children, who’ve reached out to me. When I meet someone who’s lost a child, I stop what I’m doing and I take time for them. I listen a lot more than I used to. I used to be quicker on the draw with a verse or two. I still will share verses and encouraging words, but I’m quicker to listen and slower to speak when someone comes and tells me of their pain.”

Sitting next to his father and listening intently to the interview, was Jonathan Laurie, Christopher’s younger brother. So I asked him where he was when he first heard the news about the accident.

“I was working for a plating aerospace company in Santa Ana when my foreman came over to me and asked me how I was doing,” he recalled. “At that point, I didn’t know what had happened to Christopher, but apparently it was already going around on the channels. I didn’t have my phone with me at the time so I hadn’t heard anything. He left me alone for a few minutes with a Christian police officer friend who I knew quite well and who was a Christian man and he said, ‘You need to go home to see your parents.’ That’s when I knew something had gone wrong. When I got access to my cell phone, that’s when I began receiving text messages and phone calls. I just refrained until I got home. Actually, Don McClure, the same person informed me that told my Dad. He said that my brother ‘was with the Lord.’

“I went into shock immediately. I couldn’t comprehend it, or believe it. It took me probably an hour or so for it to really start to click — that this actually happened. It was almost like I went into a dream state. It was so surreal.”

I asked Jonathan to recall the last time he saw his brother.

“My last vivid memory of him was last Fourth of July,” he said. “We were in Montana and it was probably one of the best family vacations that I can remember.

“We were quite distant in age but, as we grew older, that gap began to close. The older I became, the closer I grew to him. We grew as friends and brothers. He was always looking out for my best interests. He kept me accountable a number of times.

“He kept his eye on me. You may think that being raised in a pastor’s home would make us instant Christians and followers of Christ. You know we always did have that faith in Jesus and we always believed in Jesus, but there was a time when I rebelled and there was a time when Christopher rebelled.

“He knew where I was at as he’d lived a similar lifestyle. He was just kind of living as a ‘prodigal son’ running from his Christianity for a short time. But we both always wanted to end up back there. It was just a matter of what it was going to take.

“Up until the time that he went home to be with the Lord, he had actually been very encouraging of me: to get my life right; to quit living this double life; to stop partying and doing all that lifestyle entails. In fact, the night before his death, I was out with friends, doing the party thing; smoking and drinking. That night I really thought about how I wanted to go see my brother the next morning and talk to him about how miserable I was. I told had him previously that I wanted to get back there and he’d asked me, ‘Well, what it is going to take?’ That next morning, I got my answer. Christopher going home to be with the Lord was my wake up call.”

Jonathan went on to say, “When I got the news at home. I just sat on my bed and looked at pictures of him. After I began to comprehend what had happened, I just began to weep. Then I went through my room and just ravaged it, grabbing all the stuff I knew that was bringing me down. I held it all in my hands, prayed to the Lord, and I said, ‘God, you know that I’ve proven to you and myself that I’m incapable of doing this on my own. I can’t stop using this stuff on my own strength so you’re going to have to help me, but I want to do this.’

“He’s been faithful to do that since I prayed that prayer and He’s been faithful to help me stay clean. I’m walking with the Lord now and I know that I honor my brother’s advice. That’s the best thing I think I can do for Christopher in heaven.”

Greg Laurie was close to tears as his son told his story.

“It is a great blessing and I have to tell you, Dan, that Jonathan has shared this testimony all over in our crusades that we’ve held in different places this last year,” said Greg. “He’s stood up in front of thousands of people and Jonathan was never that kind of a person that would want to get in front of a crowd and talk. Some people like attention but he was never that way. He was more of a quiet, soft spoken, young man. But because of this thing that has happened to him and what the Lord has done in his life, he’s gotten up boldly.

“We were just in Pennsylvania at something called the Creation Festival, a Christian event that’s been going on for over 30 years. I was speaking and I brought Jonathan out to give his testimony. He gave it before 70,000 and I’ll tell you what — those kids started listening. When he talked about the compromised life, there are just a lot of kids raised in Christian homes who know what’s right, but aren’t living it, and they’re in that miserable no man’s land.

“When one of them, like Jonathan, speaks and talks about how the Lord’s gotten a hold of him, there’s an authenticity. Not that the adults don’t have it, but they think, ‘Well, you’re an adult.’ But when it’s a fellow kid, a peer speaks, it means so much more to them.

“This is one of the good things that have come of this tragedy. There’s still a lot of pain and there’s a lot of heartache, but God promise is to work ‘all things together for good’ is true. We have seen how the Lord has brought glory to his name through Jonathan’s testimony and also through Brittany, Christopher’s wife’s testimony. We’ve all felt a greater determination to serve the Lord with even more intensity than we had before.”

“I’ve determined not to put a happy face on it, meaning I want to be real. I want to be honest. I want to be truthful about the difficulty, but I also want to be honoring to the Lord and tell people how He’s sustained us through this and how I still depend upon Him every day to make it through.”

Greg then shared the good news, that late last year, Brittany gave birth to Lucy Christopher Laurie, who joins Stella, the other daughter.

“Stella is going on to her third birthday and if a father ever doted on a daughter it was Christopher,” he said. “He was a great daddy, but he did not live to see little Lucy born, at least on earth. One wonders what people know in heaven. I think it’s entirely possible that he’s fully aware of Lucy there in heaven. But he missed the birth here on earth. She’s growing and she’s just a sweetheart, one of the happiest little babies I’ve ever seen. They’re both just sweet hearts. I love them both.”

Greg is now preparing for his latest Harvest Crusade, which have drawn nearly 3 million people to ballparks and arenas across the Southland since 1990, and will mark 20 years in Southern California with its annual evangelistic outreach at Angel Stadium of Anaheim, August 14–16.

Shortly after Christopher’s death, Greg somehow preached each night at Angel Stadium last year surrounded on stage by the designs of Christopher.

“He was the lead designer in our graphics department at Harvest and he’d done the entire campaign,” he said. “So I stood on a stage that was designed by him, surrounded by art that he’d done. Even our crusade campaign this year is sort of built off the template of what he’d designed the year before.

“When I see his art around me, it inspires me. One thing Christopher uniquely implemented in the campaign last year was an animated arrow going up to heaven. There were these little arrows constantly going up and so we kept that arrow in a lot of the design that we’ve done because it just reminds us of where Christopher is and that we are to keep ‘looking up’. As the Scripture says, ‘We are to be heavenly minded. Set your minds on things above,’ Paul says in Colossians 3, ‘not on the things of the earth.” Another way to translate that is to keep thinking heaven. I think we all need to think more about heaven because we’re all headed there as followers of Jesus.”

God's Word not only tells us what is wrong but how to make it right.~David McGee

Romans 7:7

What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! On the contrary, I would not have known sin except through the law. For I would not have known covetousness unless the law had said, "You shall not covet."
NKJV

Life Lesson

God's Word not only tells us what is wrong but how to make it right.

---------------------

Coveting is a sin without action. It is a disposition of the heart often expressed in motive. When you want something that you should not have, that is coveting. Unchecked coveting will manage your actions and your reactions when you receive truth. Tithing is a great example. Your tithe does not belong to you... even before you write the check. First fruits belong to God before you have even earned them... even during weak economic times. Spurgeon wrote, "It is the teaching of Scripture that the Lord enriches the liberal and leaves the miserly to find out that withholding tendeth to poverty." Stingy Christians do not see the overflowing bounty that God has for them, but God blesses those who place their trust in Him.

Psalm 18:30
As for God, His way is perfect;
The Word of the LORD is proven;
He is a shield to all who trust in Him.
NKJV

That is the truth. Are you geared toward action or reaction? You will not hear about tithing from me often except when there is scriptural application. God's Word not only tells us what is wrong, but how to make it right. When you take your car to the garage for repairs, the mechanic will tell you what is wrong and what is needed to fix it. That's not being closed-minded... that's recognizing the truth. The Bible does just that, but for people. Every time you study the Bible the Bible studies you.

Dear Father,
Thank You for the truth of Your Word. Examine my heart. Show me Your truth and reveal in me Your ways. Please bless me with opportunities to bless others. In Jesus' name, amen

Spurgeon's October 26 morning devotion

"Ye looked for much, and, lo, it came to little; and when ye brought it home, I did blow upon it. Why? saith the Lord of hosts. Because of mine house that is waste, and ye run every man unto his own house."-Haggai 1:9.

Churlish souls stint their contributions to the ministry and missionary operations, and call such saving good economy; little do they dream that they are thus impoverishing themselves. Their excuse is that they must care for their own families, and they forget that to neglect the house of God is the sure way to bring ruin upon their own houses. Our God has a method in providence by which He can succeed our endeavours beyond our expectation, or can defeat our plans to our confusion and dismay; by a turn of His hand He can steer our vessel in a profitable channel, or run it aground in poverty and bankruptcy.

It is the teaching of Scripture that the Lord enriches the liberal and leaves the miserly to find out that withholding tendeth to poverty. In a very wide sphere of observation, I have noticed that the most generous Christians of my acquaintance have been always the most happy, and almost invariably the most prosperous. I have seen the liberal giver rise to wealth of which he never dreamed; and I have as often seen the mean, ungenerous churl descend to poverty by the very parsimony by which he thought to rise. Men trust good stewards with larger and larger sums, and so it frequently is with the Lord; He gives by cartloads to those who give by bushels.

Where wealth is not bestowed the Lord makes the little much by the contentment which the sanctified heart feels in a portion of which the tithe has been dedicated to the Lord. Selfishness looks first at home, but godliness seeks first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, yet in the long run selfishness is loss, and godliness is great gain. It needs faith to act towards our God with an open hand, but surely He deserves it of us; and all that we can do is a very poor acknowledgment of our amazing indebtedness to His goodness.

Draw Your Sword~Greg Laurie

Wednesday // July 22 // 2009
The sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God

The one piece of armor that is both offensive and defensive is the sword.

When I go into battle, I don't beat my enemy with my shield or try to defeat him with my belt or chase him down with my sandal or throw my helmet at him. I pull my sword out of its sheath and I use it.

Ephesians 6:17 tells us to take up the sword of the Spirit. When we are tempted, the most effective weapon that God has given to us as believers is the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.

Jesus modeled this so beautifully during His temptation in the wilderness. When the devil tried temptation after temptation against Him, Jesus used the sword of the Spirit (see Luke 4:1–13).

The devil said, "Why don't you turn a rock into a piece of bread. I know you are hungry."

Jesus said, "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes out of the mouth of God.' "

Then the devil said, "Why don't you worship me right now?"

Jesus responded, "It is written, 'You shall worship the Lord God only. Him only you shall serve.' "

"Why don't you cast yourself off of here, and the angels will catch you," Satan said, quoting Scripture out of context.

Jesus responded, bringing the Scripture back into context, "It has been said, 'You shall not tempt the Lord your God.' "

The sword of the Spirit works. So draw your sword, Christian.

Freedom From the Greatest Evil of All~Bob Caldwell

Freedom From the Greatest Evil of All

5:5 Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for "God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble."

Peter's closing words in this vital letter of exhortation seek to drive home the goal to strike a death blow to the single greatest force for evil within our fallen nature and pride. It is the insidious and multi-faceted force of prideful self idolatry that took the most beautiful of angels and transformed him into the devil (Is. 14:13, 1 Tim. 3:6). It is this same pride that moved our first parents to turn their backs on God, who had blessed them beyond measure. The insane force of self idolatry drove them to forsake God and the Garden of Eden for the chance to become gods themselves.

Therefore, Peter calls the shepherds who care for God's sheep to be especially on guard. They are not to use their position as a platform to rule over others or to satisfy their own egos, but are to become genuine servants. Nor should they serve unwillingly or for "dishonest gain" once they realize the ministry is really not about them. It's about love for God and love for people—nothing less and nothing more (v. 1-4).

Peter equally warns those who are being served to not misinterpret the humility of those serving them. They are not to dishonor them nor take lightly their teaching (v. 5-6). Everyone must be on special guard because Satan is like a lion quietly stalking them as prey, seeking to destroy with the cancerous power of pride (v. 8-9).

For the humble, they can look forward to the great grace that God will abundantly pour out upon them. This is the grace that saved us, and it is the same grace that will keep us. This is the grace that becomes our strength in the midst of our greatest weakness. This is the grace that our lives for all eternity will glorify. God, in grace, has taken wretched, self-willed, self-idolatrous sinners and transformed us into the object of His limitless eternal love. We, above all of creation, have been uniquely called to be His bride, the object of His amazing love. It really is amazing grace!

1 Peter 5:1-14 Shepherd the Flock

1 The elders who are among you I exhort, I who am a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that will be revealed: 2 Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly, not for dishonest gain but eagerly; 3 nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock; 4 and when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that does not fade away.

Submit to God, Resist the Devil

5 Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for

"God resists the proud,
But gives grace to the humble."

6 Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, 7 casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.

8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. 9 Resist him, steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same sufferings are experienced by your brotherhood in the world. 10 But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you. 11 To Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Farewell and Peace

12 By Silvanus, our faithful brother as I consider him, I have written to you briefly, exhorting and testifying that this is the true grace of God in which you stand.

13 She who is in Babylon, elect together with you, greets you; and so does Mark my son. 14 Greet one another with a kiss of love.

Peace to you all who are in Christ Jesus. Amen.

1 Peter 5:1-14

v. 1 The Elderspresbuteros (Gk.) advanced in life, rank or age. As a rule, Peter would be referring to those having spiritual responsibility or authority to oversee and shepherd the local believers.\

Exhortparakaleo (Gk.) To urge someone to action in an encouraging way. Peter is not commanding or demanding, but lovingly urging.

Fellow Elder – Rather than call himself by a more superior name such as Apostle, senior elder or Pope, Peter simply refers to himself as a fellow elder. A fellow is an equal, or a partner in the work. Peter is presenting himself as one who shares in the leadership responsibilities in the body of Christ.

Witness of the Sufferings of Christ – Peter was present and personally involved in the three years of Christ's ministry on earth. Not only did he personally hear Christ's teachings and witnessed His miracles, but Peter also saw Christ sweat great drops of blood. Peter was one who followed Christ through His trial and crucifixion. He saw Him interrogated and beaten. He saw Him scourged and crucified. Peter witnessed firsthand the sufferings of Christ for our sake. His testimony comes by way of personal eyewitness of the truth of the Gospel, namely that Christ suffered for our sins.

Partaker of the Glory that will be Revealed – Peter experienced the pouring out of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost. On that day He also became a partaker of the glory that was to come. For on the Day of Pentecost the Holy Spirit of God was given as a guarantee of the glory that was yet to be revealed (Eph. 1:14). The Gospel story does not end with Christ's suffering or resurrection. There is glory yet to be revealed. The Gospel will be fully accomplished in glory when Christ returns to judge the living and the dead, make all things new and usher in God's eternal kingdom.

v. 2 Shepherdpoimaino (Gk.) to tend, care for and feed

The Flock of God – God's people are often referred to in scripture as sheep or lambs (John 21:15). When Christ's sheep congregate they become a flock. Peter is giving the elders of the church the charge and responsibility to tend, care for and feed the gathering of God's people who under their care. The term flock of God is also descriptive of the church of God because God's sheep were never intended to be independent creatures but rather to be an interdependent flock (Heb. 10:24-25).

Overseersepiskopeo (Gk.) One who carefully watches over and cares for something or someone. The job description of any leader, elder or overseer in the Christian church is to watch over the sheep diligently examining the flock of God inspecting the scene for dangers or harm of any kind.

Not by Compulsion but Willingly – Peter here deals with the proper motive and attitude of an elder in the church. He says an elder should watch over the flock of God not because he has to like some sort of forced labor, but because he loves to. It makes all the difference in the world when a church leader serves because he loves God and loves God's people. Motive is everything. Furthermore, people know when they are not truly being loved. Every elder in the church has the responsibility to represent God to the people in both conduct and attitude.

Dishonest Gainaischrokerdos (Gk.) Eagerness for profit. Peter focuses in on another improper motive of the minister. A minister whose motive is purely the paycheck is working from a dishonest heart.

Eagerlyprothumos (Gk.) Willingly, with enthusiasm.

v. 3 Lordskatakurieuo (Gk.) To exercise dominion over; to bring under one's power, to subdue, master. To lord over someone would be to bring that person under your power and command as a master would a slave. Peter points out that usurping authority is not the way of Christ and Christian leadership.

Entrustedkleros (Gk.) a lot, allotted to your charge, inheritance

Being Examplestupos (Gk.) A model, pattern or imprint; an impression, stamp made by a die. If there is one distinct way Christ taught others, it is by example. To us today, this means that the pattern of the teacher's life should set the pattern for the student's life. See Mark 10:42-45, John 13:13-15.

v. 4 When the Chief Shepherd Appears – Just as Christ is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, He is also the Shepherd of Shepherds. Right now we do not physically see Him. But when He returns in glory we shall see Him with our own eyes and we shall receive the reward described in the next phrase.

Crown of Glory – A crown is a sign of honor and blessing. There are many crowns promised to the Christian in scripture, the crown of righteousness (2 Tim. 4:8), life (Rev. 2:10), glory (1 Pet. 5:4), rejoicing (1 Thess. 2:19), etc. This crown of glory is likely figurative (Rev. 4:10).

does not fade away – The glory and honor and blessings that we receive from God are permanent and eternal in contrast to earthly rewards.

v. 5 Likewise…Submit Yourselves to Your Elders – Peter has been stressing the importance of the proper attitude of humility among the elders and leadership in the church. Now he turns to the youth and says, likewise. As the elders set the example of humility so should the younger people then be submitted to the elders. If the elders have reason to be humble, much more do the youthful have reason to live in humility.

Resists the Proud – Pride arrogantly assumes its own worthiness; therefore pride is contrary to God's grace (Ps 138:6; Prov. 3:34; 6:16,17; 29:23; Is. 2:11, 12, 17; James 4:6).

Proudhuperephanos (Gk.) showing one's self above others, despising others or even treating them with contempt

v. 6 Humble Yourselves – This can mean to have a modest opinion of one's self or to assign a lower rank or place.

that He may Exalt You – A proud person seeks to exalt himself. But the principles of the Kingdom of God are such that if you humble yourself under God's hand, God will be the one who exalts you in His way and at His time.

Exalt – to lift up on high; to raise to dignity, honor, and happiness.

v. 7 Casting – to throw upon, place upon

All Your Care Upon Him – This is how to humble yourself under God's mighty hand, by trusting Him with your life and cares.

He Cares for You – We are given good reason to cast our cares upon the Lord. Not only is He mighty, which makes Him able to care for us. But He is also caring in character. Which makes Him eager to care for us.

v. 8 Sober – Alert, self-controlled and serious. The opposite of drunken.

Vigilant – To be cautious and watchful for any oncoming dangers, to be on guard.

Your Adversary the Devil – Scriptures teach us that the devil is not just a figure of speech or a concept but a real being. Peter calls him our adversary. That means the devil is our enemy. Jesus told us that the Devil has come to steal, kill and destroy (John 10:10), which is just the opposite of what Jesus wants to do in our lives. Elsewhere in scripture the Devil is also called Lucifer (Is 14:12), Satan (1 Chron. 21:1; Job 1:6; Zech 3:2; Matt 4:10; Mark 8:33; Luke 10:18; Acts 26:18), and the father of lies (John 8:44).

Devildiabolos (Gk.) Slanderer, false accuser. The Bible speaks of a real devil who can either attack you or flee from you. This is not metaphorical or symbolic language. Behind spiritual warfare is a host of actual evil personalities. The Devil is Satan, the fallen angel (Is 14:12-15; Luke 10:18) who enticed a third of the angels of heaven to turn from God. These are the demons. See Rev 12:4. All these are at work to influence your own fleshly desires against you and turn you from submitting to God. Also see John 12:31; 16:11; Heb 2:14; 1 John 3:8; Rev 9:1; 12:7-9; 20:2.

Like a Roaring Lion, Seeking Whom he May Devour – This phrase demonstrates the ferociousness with which our adversary works. He is not merely hiding in a dark place, hoping we might come to him and wander into his trap. He is a hunter. He is active.

Devour – to drink down, swallow up, drown

v. 9 Resist – Peter doesn't tell us to run from him or hide from him. We are not powerless in this fight against the devil. We are not to fear this roaring loin because greater is He that is in us than he that is in the world (1 John 4:4).

Steadfast – strong, firm, immovable, solid, hard, rigid

Same Sufferings – Peter knew that it would encourage and give us strength to know that we are not alone in our sufferings. If the devil can get you to believe that you are the only one going through a particular trial you can easily become mentally and spiritually overwhelmed. Peter reminds us that we are never alone in any suffering or temptation. But not only that, God will be with us in every suffering. See 1 Cor. 10:13.

v. 10 God of All Grace – For more insights into this attribute of God see Ex. 34:6; Ps. 86:5,15; Rom. 15:5,13; 2 Cor. 1:3-4, 13:11; Heb. 13:20.

Who called us – This is how every Christian came to God. God called them (2 Tim 1:9; 2 Peter 1:3). It was God who called us to His eternal glory. And He called us through the person and work of the Holy Spirit. Knowing that it is God who called us gives us strength and hope that He also will see us through to the end.

Eternal Glory – The eternal pleasures and richness of God's presence in Heaven (2 Cor 4:17; 2 Tim 2:10; Heb 9:15; 1 John 2:25).

Suffered – This broad term for suffering covers a wide range of various kinds of suffering. The point Peter is trying to make in this context is that all suffering for the Christian is temporary and redemptive.

v. 11 Glory – splendor, brightness, magnificence excellence, preeminence, dignity, grace, majesty, and praise

Dominionkratos (Gk.) power, strength, mighty with great power; authority

Amen – At the end. So it is, so be it, may it be fulfilled.

v. 12 Silvanus – Silvanus (also known as Silas) was a Roman citizen who was a companion with Paul on many of his journeys (Acts 16). Some have supposed that when Paul was imprisoned in Rome he sent Silas on to accompany Peter in his work for the Lord. The phrase by Silvanus implies either that Silvanus wrote this letter as Peter dictated it, or that Peter sent this letter along its way in the trusted hands of Silvanus.

I Consider Him – Peter has considered the life and actions of Silas and concluded that he is faithful. You can only come to this conclusion by observing and examining a person's reputation and character over time.

Exhortingparakaleo (Gk.) To encourage and strengthen.

Testifyingepimartureo (Gk.) To bear witness of the truth.

v. 13 She Who is in Babylon – Refers to a sister church in Babylon. It is likely that Peter is actually writing from the city of Babylon. Peter is simply sending greetings to his readers from another elect group or person.

Elect – means chosen by God for eternal life

Mark, My Son – This Mark is most likely the same Mark who wrote the Gospel of Mark and eventually became Peter's traveling companion. Peter's ministry relationship with Mark was that of a father and a son.

v. 14 Greet One Another With a Kiss of Love – This is the way a loving family would naturally greet or bid farewell. Even today in the Middle East it is still a custom of love and respect to greet a a person you respect with a kiss of love.

Peace to You – Peter is wishing peace to all who are in Christ. Peace is the state of tranquility of mind and absence of fear. This godly rest is always a valuable possession in a world of war and unrest.

Who are in Christ Jesus – A specific phrase limiting this blessing to those who through faith have placed their trust in Christ for salvation and by the Holy Spirit have been grafted into the body of Christ (Rom. 10:9-10, Eph. 1:13). The phrase, in Christ is found 87 times in the NKJV bible and is descriptive of all those who have put their trust in Christ and embraced Him as Savior and Lord.

Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for "God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble." –1 Peter 5:5

We see in Your scripture, Lord, the command to all to be submissive to one another and clothed in humility. We pray today, God, for hearts that are humbled before You and before our fellow man, that we can serve without pride and that Your all-powerful, all-encompassing love shines through us. Give us the chance, Jesus, to serve others for You.

Pre-Marital Discipleship

In pre-marriage discipleship it is truly amazing to see how God uses one marriage to bless and encourage a new marriage in the making! Each week we are encouraged and reminded of God's divine design for marriage! The investment of learning about each other and learning about God's will for husbands and wives is such an amazing blessing. The couple sees how God gives them the strength and grace for each other to bless and honor the marriage.

Prayer Points
  • For the Holy Spirit to fill these marriages with discernment and grace.
  • For daily prayer together.
  • For a humble and serving spirit.
  • For teachable and open hearts.

Old Testament - Today in Second Chronicles we read about Solomon's dedication of the Temple of the Lord in Jerusalem! Below is "King Solomon praying before the Temple" by Neapolitan painter Giuseppe Bonito, c. 1750:

I meant to do this in yesterday's posting - show an exterior and interior image below of what's now often referred to as "Solomon's Temple." Even though it was clearly the Temple of the Lord, it's referred to as Solomon's Temple based on Solomon building it - and we'll read about some more Temple's later on in our readings in the One Year Bible this year, including Ezekiel's Temple, which is fascinating! Anyhow, below are two images of Solomon's Temple, but let me also highly encourage you to take a few moments to check out all of the cool images of the interior and exterior of Solomon's Temple at this link. (make sure you scroll down quite a bit on this link to see all the images) I think this link will help you visualize the Temple much better! Also, at the home page of that link above, you can read up on the Temple Mount area of Jerusalem today where Solomon's Temple was believed to have been located, along with the Second Temple. And now where the Dome of the Rock mosque is located. Very interesting stuff on that web page! And tons of links. Can't say I agree with it all... but it's a website worth exploring.

New Testament - Romans chapter 7 today has some amazing teachings about struggling with sin. I imagine that all of us at one point or another have concurred with Paul - and remember this is the apostle Paul writing this! - in verses 15 through 17: "I don't understand myself at all, for I really want to do what is right, but I don't do it. Instead, I do the very thing I hate. I know perfectly well that what I am doing is wrong, and my bad conscience shows that I agree that the law is good. But I can't help myself, because it is sin inside me that makes me do these evil things." These verses get at Original Sin in a big way. We all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Sin can live inside of us and make us do evil things that we hate doing. What do you suppose - or Whom do you suppose - frees us from this bondage to sin? Jesus. Yes, Jesus frees us. How? He paid the penalty on the cross for our sins. And he gives us the free gift of salvation and the Holy Spirit to free us from the bondage of sin. Take a look at these verses again above from Paul. Is sin living inside of you making you do things you hate? Do you want to be free from this slavery to sin? Will you pray to accept Jesus as your savior today and allow him to free you from you bondage to sin? Please do. It's the best decision you will ever make. Bible.org's fantastic commentary on today's readings in Romans titled "The War Within" is at this link.

Psalms - Psalm 18 is an amazing one! We'll get this Psalm for the next 3 days of readings, which is great. And then comes Psalm 19 which is off the charts awesome! Verse 1 today is so beautiful: "I love you, LORD; you are my strength." How often do you tell God that you love him? One thing that one of my former pastors does when he prays publicly, which absolutely moves me, is that he closes out just about every prayer with "God we love you. And we pray all of this in the name of your son Jesus." The last line of course is the powerful line! But, that second to last line... is just beautiful. Just telling God that we love him. I'm not sure I tell God that I love him often enough. God may not "need" to hear it. But I think that I need to say it more often. I love you God!

I_love_you

Proverbs - I hope you don't relate too well to Proverbs 19 verse 24... but I'll confess that I have been able to relate to this in my past - "Some people are so lazy that they won't even lift a finger to feed themselves." There were days in my past were I was literally this lazy. What a sad state of affairs. It's hard to say exactly why I was being so lazy - other than one clear reason: I was not in a relationship with Jesus. I was living for myself and myself only. So I thought it was fine to sleep and watch TV 24 x 7. What did it matter? Well... it mattered a lot. Being lazy like this is a scary place to be. I think it allows the Enemy to move into our lives in big ways. So - thankfully - as we know from our recent Romans readings, we can be free from our lazy ways! Being in relationship with Jesus has literally cured me of my laziness. Don't get me wrong - I still chill out and rest on occasion - we really need to take a Sabbath day of rest once a week.... but let us not live our lives as couch potatoes! Let us get in the game of Life!

Couchpotato

Couldn't resist this cute potato sack race image below... :)
These 2 are definitely not lazy couch potatoes!

Worship God: Based on that wonderful painting by Bonito at the top of this post of Solomon lifting his eyes to heaven, I think this video montage of Scripture and images set to Bebo Norman's song "I Will Lift my Eyes" is perfect. So, lift your hands and worship God with me if you would!

Please join us in memorizing and meditating on a verse of Scripture this week: "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." Romans 8:28 (NIV)
