To follow Jesus we must be focused on Jesus ~ David McGee

Acts 6:1
"And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration."

---------------------
Last night, Pastor Shawn talked about "God's Model for the Church" which led into Pastor Nick sharing about "The Supremacy of Love." It was a great combination because when the church operates according to God's model instead of according to man's model, love indeed becomes supreme in the church.
In Acts chapter 6, we see an interesting transaction between the Apostles and some disciples regarding a situation in the early church. The gist of the situation was that the Greek widows felt discriminated against and that special favor was being shown to the Jewish widows. The Apostles realized that they could not continue in the calling the Lord had given them and take care of the minutia of church affairs. The answer was to allow faithful men who had demonstrated their heart for God and love for others to be servant leaders over the people. But, what brought this situation to a head? People focused on themselves.
Many problems that creep up in the church are the result of our focus getting off God and being placed on self. When that happens, things get out of kilter in our following Jesus. We cannot follow Jesus and be focused on self. This is true individually, but also on a church wide basis. An inward focused church is a selfish church. To follow Jesus we must be focused on Jesus. When that happens, it's like a dam breaks allowing incredible works of love to flow unhindered in our lives. That, my friend, is God's model for the church, loving God and loving others.
Dear Jesus,
Thank You for loving me. It was Your great love for me that kept You on the cross. In thought of that, I am humble. I admit, many times, I take my eyes off of You and focus on situations and circumstance around me. Give me the strength to draw my focus back to You. Empower me with a passion to share my love others. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Leastmost: What is the least you will do? ~ Michael James Stone

-excerpt from "Utmost with the Least Most"

What is the least you will do?

I run into people all the time that tell me,
I want to "witness' to my family but I don't know what to say.
As I am getting older, I think I am inclined to be more sympathetic, but I have to ask you.

Did you see that gal?  WOW what a babe!!
Check out that sixpack on that guy...WOO HOO.

Anyone got the latest Fantasy football standings?
Did you hear Who is on Dancing the the Stars?

The truth is we have lots to talk about, but really little to say.

I am sorry George, you have Cancer and less than six months to live.
( Does this mean I am going to miss the Superbowl?)
I am sorry to inform you Mrs. Jones, you're son died in Afghanistan.
(What about his basketball scholarship to UCLA?)

It really isn't funny, but we have our priorities screwed up.

I can ask you whats on TV tonight,  or if you TIVO it.
I can ask which APP you have on your Cell Phone and if you text.
I can even start a conversation with you by saying,
"Did you hear about...,"
And we will likely talk for hours.

But if I really want to kill a conversation all I have to do is say Jesus.

Want to see how fast you can stop a conversation and people will walk away from you?
Ask them: Do you know Jesus?
Not: Are you a Christian. Everyone says they are and I am sure even Satan himself would claim to be one.
But ask somone if they Know Jesus and watch what happens.

Better Yet, try this today with someone.
Say: Do you Know Jesus?
and if they say No, do this.

Look at the person with your imagination and think about Hell.
Picture them blind.

Think about them as if they were standing on a streetcorner and they start to step off.
Blind, they move forward into oncoming traffic.

What are you going to do?

What are you going to do?

Stop them?
Warn them?
Help them cross the street?

What are you going to do?

Maybe study to figure out how to Warn, Stop, Help them. Maybe figure out the odds of the blind man walking into oncoming traffic. Maybe take a stab at whether there really is death and not just a philosophical change of consciousness.

We could stop now and pray about anything at all.

Maybe God wants the blind man to get hit by a Car. Maybe He will part the traffic and let the blind man go thru untouched. Maybe He will heal the blindman in time so he can see the cars coming. Maybe..., Maybe.

Maybe not.

Maybe you will stand there and say nothing, do noting, just wait, watch and see.
Maybe that blindman will get hit in front of your eyes and you will realize you could have, you should have, it was possible for you, to do something. To say something. To try.

Miriam in Jerusalem I met who made aliyah to Israel and became a "caretaker" for a Orthodox woman in Israel. Over twenty years ago, she did so keeping her faith in Jesus quiet. She cared for the Old Woman daily and did all the menial chores one does for the elderly who are dying.

Miriam wanted to tell her "care" about Jesus because the woman kept brining up the subject of life, death, dying, even talked about God, Christians and mentioned Jesus a time or two. Miriam never said a word.

She wanted to, but risking expulsion in those days was a big deal for Miriam and her husband,

One day the woman collapsed and Miriam held her to her bosom as the woman was dying, Miriam watched the woman as she never closed her eyes, but the life left her. Miriam never forgot that day, or the vow she made to never back away from opportunity no matter what the cost. She can't let go of the fact she knows for certain, the woman is not in heaven, and she should have said something.

One midnight hour many many years later as I was in her home in Jerusalem after we had gone out passing out tracts about Jesus, I heard Miriam praying, and she told me the story. Miriam today is the most aggressive evangelist I ever met with a child in J4J and many many stories about the missionaries who have passed thru her doors in Jerusalem.

It took the death of One Old Lady for Miriam to come alive and not let One More Soul got to hell, Not if they passed thru Miriams Door.

It took the death of One Son, Jesus, to open the door so you could be saved.
What death will it take to get you to open your mouth and speak?

The Blind man might be your child stepping into the oncoming traffic.

What will you do?
What is the least you will do?

Is God performing the way you expect Him to? ~ Kay Arthur

Are you disappointed with God?

I have two questions for you.

Number one: Is God performing the way you expect Him to perform in your life or are you disappointed with God? „Cause He is just not doing the things that you think He ought to do if He is God.

The second question is this: Are you satisfied? Is there a deep contentment in your life despite your circumstances? What‟s the answer to these two questions?

We‟ll look at it today as we look at God‟s precepts for life.

Well, today we‟re finishing up Jeremiah chapter 2. And in Jeremiah chapter 2 verse 29, He says, “Why do you contend with me…?” (Jeremiah 2:29) The word contend means “I have a case against you.” It‟s that word “R-I-B.” I can remember it, it‟s a rib.

And He says, “Why are you contending against me?”

They‟re contending against God because they‟re not happy with God.And that may be you. And Precious One, if that‟s you or someone that you know, then you need to listen very carefully.

Or if you find yourself and you think, I really deep down inside, in my gut; I‟m not content. There‟s not a deep contentment. God wants you to have a deep contentment.

You say, “But I just lost my job.”

You may be among the one million people in the United States of America that when the year 2009 came, I mean, jobs started to tumble and they tumbled and they tumbled and the United States of America is in a mess.

But I want you to know something:

No matter the state of the nation, no matter the state of affairs, it is possible, beyond that state of affairs, to have a deep contentment inside of you. And you will see this as we go through Jeremiah chapter 2. Alright, now we left off at verse 19. So verse 20, He says, “For long ago I broke your yoke…[I] tore off your bonds…;” and He‟s referring, of course, to them coming out of Egypt, out of a house of bondage where they were slaves. He says, “But you said, „I will not serve!‟” I will not serve. “And on every high hill And under every green tree You have laid down as a harlot…,” (Jeremiah 2:20) He says, “…I planted you [as] a choice vine….” (Jeremiah 2:21)

Hey, you were mine.

You were mine and now you are lying down as a harlot?

You‟re walking away from me when I‟m the one that took off your bonds? You don‟t want to serve me? Precious One, do you understand that when you got saved, you weren‟t saved just so you wouldn‟t go hell and so that you would go to heaven, you were saved, Beloved, so that you might serve God, so that you might know that deep satisfaction and that contentment of having a life of worth, having a life of value, having a life that counts, having a purpose. God has a purpose for you. “[You] are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, [that] God [has] before [before you were ever saved] ordained [for you to] walk in….” (Ephesians 2:10, KJV)

There can be this deep contentment, but they‟re not content.

Now watch what He says. He plants them as a vine. And He says, “…„How then have you turned yourself before Me into the degenerate shoots of a foreign vine? „Although you wash yourself with lye and use much soap, the stain of your iniquity is before Me….‟” (Jeremiah 2:21) Now I‟ve gotta stop there. He says, “Although you wash yourself with lye…,” Hey, lye is strong stuff, “… [and you try to get clean], the stain of your iniquity is before Me….” (Jeremiah 2:22)

In other words, you cannot get clean yourself. Only God can make you clean. You cannot get yourself in shape and that‟s why you‟re discontent, because you wash and you scrub and nothing happens. He says, “„How can you say, „I am not defiled, I have not gone after…[Baal]‟…?” He says, “…Look at your way in the valley! Know what you have done! You are…[like a] camel entangling her ways…,” He goes on to say another one, “…A wild donkey accustomed to the wilderness…,” He says, “…That sniffs the wind in her passion. In the time of her heat who can turn her away? All who seek her will not become weary; in her month they will find her.” (Jeremiah 2:23-24)

What is He saying? You‟re like an animal in heat. You‟re running here. You‟re running there. You‟re running there trying to get satisfied. I just got an email from ah a woman that heard me on “Revive Our Hearts.” Nancy Leigh DeMoss is a good friend. And she and I did a series, and I shared my testimony. And this gal told me in that, she said, “I was like you. I went from one man, to another man, to another man trying to find satisfaction. There is no deep contentment inside.” And some of you understand. Get out of their beds. And you men quit fornicating all over. You have a case against God?

Listen, God has a case against you.

You say, “I can‟t get out of their beds. I‟m a slave.” And God says, “Hey, that‟s My business. I redeem slaves. I take you out of the slave market.” Israel was taken out of the slave market, and yet she went back to her slavery because she broke the bonds. It says, “Keep your feet from being unshod….” He says, “You want to go around barefoot and wandering?” He says, “„Keep your feet from being unshod... [keep] your throat from thirst….‟” (Jeremiah 2:25)

Now why is He saying that? He is saying, “Listen, you don‟t have to live the wayyou‟re living. I‟m, remember, the fountain of living waters?” Remember what He says in chapter 2, in verse 13. He says, “„…they have forsaken Me, the fountain of living waters….‟” (Jeremiah 2:13) Hey, you‟re thirsty? Come to Me. He says, “„Keep your feet from being unshod….‟”

Well, they take off the captive shoes.

He says, “„…And…you said, „It is hopeless! [It‟s hopeless.]…I have loved strangers, and after them I will walk.”‟” He says, “„As the thief is shamed when he is discovered, so the house of Israel is shamed….‟” (Jeremiah 2:25-26) You know, do you feel shamed? If you‟re sinning and you don‟t feel shamed, then I want you to know God had you listen to this program because you are searing your conscience. And you‟re going to be in grave, grave danger.

When you sin, you should feel shamed.

Now the psychologists and the counselors are saying, “Oh, that person just ruined you ‟cause they made you feel shamed.” There is a legitimate shame, and there is an illegitimate shame. A legitimate shame comes when you break God‟s holy commandments, when you do not live according to His word, when you willfully disobey Him. You should be ashamed. It‟s not a shame that is a false shame. It‟s a genuine shame. He says, now listen and He‟s going to describe the state of the nation. He says, “„…So the house of Israel is shamed; they, their kings, their princes…their priests…their prophets….”” (Jeremiah 2:26)

From the top on down every aspect of society is shamed because they‟re not ruling as they should. They are not teaching the Word as they should. They are prophesying falsely. And so they ought to be shamed. He says, “„…[You] say to a tree, “You are my father”….‟” Duh! You look at a tree. Are you a tree? If the tree is your father then shouldn‟t you look like a tree? “„…[You say] to a stone, “You gave me birth….”‟” (Jeremiah 2:27) That hard rock gave birth to you? What is He talking about?

He‟s talking about idols.

He‟s talking about them worshipping trees. They‟re going up on the high hills. They‟re worshipping the trees that are cut in phallic symbols. They‟re worshipping the stones that they have made for altars for their false gods. He says, “„…they have turned their back to Me…and not their face….‟” (Jeremiah 2:27)

In other words, what is He saying? He is saying “Here I am. They are turning their back to Me. I can‟t see their face. They‟re turning their back to Me. They‟re worshipping a tree. They‟re worshipping a stone, and here I am. I am God.” Okay, now watch what He says because it is the time of trouble in the United States of America. He says, “„…But in the time of…trouble they will say, “Arise and save us.”‟” and He says, “„But where are your gods…?‟” (Jeremiah 2:27-28)

You‟re calling to Me now.

All of a sudden, you‟re down on your knees, and you‟re saying, “God save me! Save me! Save me!” He says, “I want to ask you a question, where is that stick? Where is that stone? Where is that tree that you were worshipping? Why are you saying to Me, „Arise and save us in the time of trouble?‟”

You say, “Well, you‟re God, and I expect you to do that.”

Well, listen, because He is God He has expectations for you too. And this is what He goes on to say. He says, “„But where are your gods…,‟” little „g‟, “„…which you [have] made for yourself? Let them arise, if they can save you….‟” (Jeremiah 2:28) See if the stone that doesn‟t even have feet, that lies there, that has to be moved. Or it‟s moved by a storm, or a flood, or a man. See if that stone can save you. See if that tree can save you. He says, “„…Let them arise, if they can save you in the time of your trouble….‟” (Jeremiah 2:28)

Now we‟re teaching you to study the Word of God. And I want to remind you before I forget that you need to read Jeremiah 3 and 4 for next week. Just read it through because I‟m going to teach it a little bit differently. I‟m not going to take you verse by verse at first. I‟m going to give you an overview, then I‟m going to take you verse by verse. But if you‟re not studying with us then you need to do this because one of the things we teach you is how to observe the text. And here you should be underlining “in the time of your trouble,” in the time of your trouble. It‟s a time phrase. It tells you when and it tells you what‟s going on. Well, He says, “„“…Arise and save us.”‟” He says, “„…for according to [your cities]

the number of your cities are your gods….‟” (Jeremiah 2:27-28) Do you have another God besides God? Or do you really understand who God is? We‟ll talk about it in just a minute.

I opened this program, the first segment, with a question and I‟m going to open it again with a second question.

What is your complaint against God?

Is God just not performing the way you want him to perform? Is He not living up to your expectations? And then my question is: Do you know God? Do you understand Him, or are you judging Him on the basis of a faulty knowledge? God says, in Jeremiah 2, verse 29 [Why do you contend with love? Why are you bringing a charge against Me?] (PARAPHRASE, Jeremiah 2:29) It really comes out better in the Hebrew, doesn‟t it? Why are bringing a charge against Me? Are you upset with God because you can‟t manipulate Him? Because you pray to Him and you tell Him what you want Him to do and He does not do it? Listen, He doesn‟t always do what you want Him to do because first of all, He‟s not to run and do this and do this. He‟s your God. He‟s the master over you as you will see when you read Jeremiah chapter 3 and 4. He says, Am I not to be your master? (See Jeremiah 3:14)

Listen, God is pure wisdom. He is omniscient. He knows everything. He is eternal. So He knows the beginning, the middle and the end all things are known Him. He is the sovereign Ruler of all the universe. He is loving-kindness, He is goodness and He is merciful. And He is patient, and He is long suffering and His compassions fail not. What is there to have a complaint with God against? It‟s simply, because you don‟t understand as they did not understand that God had their best interest in heart, in mind. And God was moving on their behalf, but because they were not doing what God said that they were to do God had to chasten them. God was speaking, but they weren‟t listening and that could be you.

Listen to what He says, “„Why do you contend with Me? You [all have] transgressed against Me‟….” (Jeremiah 2:29) Listen, I‟m having to do this because I‟m also righteous. He says, “„In vain I have struck your sons….‟” He says, “„…they accepted no chastening….‟” (Jeremiah 2:30) I‟ve been trying to get their attention. I‟m a good Father. I discipline my kids.

Oh, that we had more good fathers, more good mothers that instead of giving their kids everything they want, or being so busy that they would get up out of the chair and reinforce what they want and what the kid should do. God is chastening, and they are not accepting it. I mean they‟re going like this. He says, “„…[Your sword has devoured your prophets] your sword has devoured your prophets like a [roaring] lion.‟” (Jeremiah 2:30)

When I read that it reminded me of what Jesus said in Luke. Let‟s go to Luke chapter 11. In Luke chapter 11, and this is so interesting. He‟s talking the Pharisees. He‟s talking to the religious leaders that just don‟t get it. And He says in verse 39, “…„Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and…the platter; but inside…you are full of robbery and wickedness.‟” (Luke 11:39) Now what is the term that He uses? And you‟ll see it over and over again in Jeremiah, wicked, wicked, wicked. You are being wicked. And then He goes on to say, “„Woe to you Pharisees…!‟” (Luke 11:43) And He says it over and over again.

And He says, “„Woe to you! [the people,] for you build the tombs of the prophets, and it was your fathers who killed them.‟” I sent them to you. I was trying to speak to you and your sword killed your prophets. “„So you are witnesses and approve the deeds of your fathers; because it was they who killed them, and you build their tombs.‟” (Luke 11:47-48)

In other words, they didn‟t want Jesus either.

They didn‟t want Jesus they wanted their own religion. And I want to tell you something, there is only one true religion, and that is the worship of Almighty God, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. So He says, verse 31, “„O generation, heed the word of the LORD [ heed the word of the Lord.] Have I been a wilderness to Israel or a land of…darkness? Why do My people say, “We are free to roam; We will no longer come to You?”‟” (Jeremiah 2:31) Listen if you are roaming it‟s because you are not satisfied.

You are roaming and roaming away from God. He says, “„Can a virgin forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? Yet My people have forgotten Me days without number.‟” (Jeremiah 2:32) Now He said this in verse 6, “„They did not say, “Where is the LORD who brought us [from] the land of Egypt….”‟” (Jeremiah 2:6) He said it in verse 8, “„The priests did not say, “Where is the LORD?” …those who handle…did not know Me; the rulers also transgressed against Me…the prophets prophesied by Baal and [they] walked after things that did not profit.‟” (Jeremiah 2:8) They didn‟t miss Me at all because they had their own religion.

Now listen to me very carefully.

If you have your own religion, you will never be satisfied with God. And that‟s why this program exists. That‟s why Precept Ministries International exists. That‟s why I believe that the work we are doing is the most critical work that can be done in Christendom right now, and that is in the midst of all that is happening in the United States of America is to drive you back to the Word of God and teach you how you can discover truth for yourself. Because if you discover it, if you bow the knee, if you hang on His every word, I promise you, you will be able to go through anything. And you won‟t be disappointed with God.

You will be elated with God, satisfied with God, and there will be a contentment within no matter what the storms are without. He says, “„How well you prepare your way to seek love! Therefore even the wicked women you have taught your ways.‟” He says, You played the harlot, and you are teaching these wicked women how to be more wicked. He says, “„Also on your skirts is found the life blood of the innocent poor….‟” (Jeremiah 2:33-34)

He says, “You are not taking care of people.” I mean, when you look at the crisis that started at the end of 2008, exacerbated in 2009, what did you find? You found people spending money, getting billions of dollars, billions of dollars in bonuses. And the lifeblood of the innocent poor was on their skirts. He says, “„…You did not find them breaking in….‟” they weren‟t coming and charging your houses, “„…but in spite of all these things, yet you said, “I‟m innocent; surely His anger is turned away from Me‟” God says, “„…[no behold I will] enter into judgment with you because you say, “I have not sinned.”‟” (Jeremiah 2:34-35)

Precious One, the beginning of a satisfied relationship with God is confessing your sin and turning to Him.

He is the Great Redeemer. He says, “„Why do you go around so much changing your way? Also, you will be put to shame by Egypt as you were put to shame by Assyria.‟” You can read about that in 2 Kings 23:29-30. (See 2 Kings 23:29-30) He says, “„From this place…you will go out with your hands on your head; For the LORD has rejected those in whom you trust, And you will not prosper with them.‟” (Jeremiah 2:36-37)

What is He saying?

He is saying this, Beloved, He said, “You‟re going to go out, you‟re going to arise and leave that country. You‟re going to go out with your hands on your heads. You are going into captivity.”

Why? “Because you trusted them, those nations, because you turned to those gods, to those trees, to those stones, and you didn‟t turn to Me. I‟m the only one that can satisfy you. I‟m the only one that can take care of you because I‟m the only God.” Turn to Him, and be saved.

Give Him all of our hurts and cares. ~ Raul Ries

Depend on God in our Hearts

“Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.”
1 Peter 5:7

One of our biggest problems in receiving God’s healing is that we don’t give Him all of our hurts and cares. Peter said to “cast” ALL of our cares on the Lord. To “cast” means to throw! We need to throw all, not some, of our hurts on the Lord. And, we need to leave them there!

God wants to carry our hurts for us- we need to let Him.
Pray and allow God to use your hurt. Hurt can draw us closer to the Lord. When we experience great pain we often turn to God, seeking His help and His healing.

Thought for the Day:
In times of trial our faith grows- and in the desert experienced,
we come to know the Lord in a great way.

Depending upon human resources (ours or others) is barrenness of life, ~ Bob Hoekstra

Jeremiah Contrasting the Two Options on Trust

Thus says the LORD: "Cursed is the man who trusts in manand makes flesh his strength, whose heart departs from the LORD. For he shall be like a shrub in the desert, and shall notsee when good comes, but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land which is not inhabited. Blessedis the man who trusts in the LORD, and whose hope is theLORD." (Jeremiah 17:5-7)
Jeremiah also offers insight into living by grace as he contrasts the two options on trust.

When it comes to where we will place our trust, there are basically only two choices: man or God. This choice is a critical one, because one is a curse, and the other is a blessing."Cursed is the man who trusts in man Blessed is the man whotrusts in the LORD."

The natural mind of fallen humanity places its confidence in man (usually, in themselves). The flesh of every born again believer is tempted to place trust in the same direction. This brings a very serious spiritual curse. "Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes fleshhis strength." When we exercise dependence upon man, we can only draw upon fleshly resources for strength. This amounts to a departure from the Lord in whom we are to trust: "whose heart departs from the LORD." The Lord is the only source of all true blessings. Consequently, to trust in man results in a curse.

The curse that results from depending upon human resources (ours or others) is barrenness of life, spiritually speaking. "For he shall be like a shrub in the desert." A desert shrub represents the antithesis of abundant spiritual life. It is the picture of a plant that is barely surviving. Desert shrubs are typically sparse in growth and lacking in fruitfulness. A person who trusts in flesh is like this shrub. He will not see good days of bountiful vitality. "For he shall be like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see when good comes." People who trust in the fallen resources of man never do really see days that God's word would call good. Rather, they dwell in spiritual conditions that are like salty soil, wastelands, scorched land, incapable of habitation: "but shallinhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land which isnot inhabited." Such living is a cursed spiritual existence of carnal desolation.

Yet, there is a fully effective option by which such barrenness can be avoided. "Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, and whose hopeis the LORD."

Dear Lord, I confess that I have often trusted in myself. I agree with Your word that the flesh always brings the curse of spiritual barrenness. I have found the same is true when I place my hope in others. Lord, teach me to trust in You, that I might know the blessedness of having Your grace as my resource, Amen.

Leadership: What would it take for you to disobey God? (86-3) ~ Barry Werner

What would it take for you to disobey God? (86-3)

Along with the costs of leadership come many opportunities. Some of these opportunities will be positive and some will be negative. Many leaders have access to information or financial resources that they could use to their personal advantage. Other leaders travel widely and somewhat anonymously and have opportunity to compromise purity without anyone knowing. Others could use the power of their position for their own benefit. Whether the temptation is money, sex or power there will always be temptation for leaders to sell themselves out for less than God’s best. Read 1 Samuel 15:1-23.
The Lord could not have been more specific. Speaking through the prophet Samuel, God commanded Saul to destroy the Amalekites and everything they owned; no one and no thing was to be spared.
This was an order to Saul that would be a test of Saul’s fitness to lead God’s people – a test he failed miserably. When the pressure was on, instead of obeying God’s command, Saul spared the king and the best of the livestock. Saul’s integrity had a price. Saul was more concerned about his reputation before the people than his standing before God. Saul wanted a defeated king to gloat over and expanded wealth through owning animals.
Later when Samuel confronted Saul, instead of owning up to his wrong, Saul compounded the sin by feebly suggesting that he had kept the best for the Lord. Samuel informed Saul that God seeks obedience rather than sacrifice and told him that his actions of disobedience had cost him the right to lead God’s people.
As you have read about Saul’s compromise have you asked yourself “What’s my price?” What would it take for you to disobey God? Hopefully your commitment is nonnegotiable. Such commitment is a crucial element in the character of a leader.
Because leadership by its very nature means influence, it is only a matter of time before a leader’s heart will have a chance to reveal its true nature: soft and obedient toward the Lord or prideful and self-serving. Every leader should periodically ask, “Do I have a price?” Saul’s leadership provides at least three red flags to help leaders determine if they have a price and are about to “sell out”:
  • Pride that lies to God’s chosen leader
  • Reinterpreting what God really wants (rationalizing disobedience)
  • Willingness to destroy the weak and protect the strong
A godly leader’s commitment to God should be such that they will obey God no matter what they are offered to make a compromise.
Psalm 119:97-101 “Oh, how I love your law! I meditate on it all day long. Your commands make me wiser than my enemies, for they are ever with me. I have more insight than all my teachers, for I meditate on your statutes. I have more understanding than the elders, for I obey your precepts, I have kept my feet from every evil path so that I might obey your word.”

In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.

Colossians 2:3

All wisdom, all knowledge is in — not from — Jesus. Whoever desires wisdom to navigate life successfully must come to the realization that there is nothing more, nothing less, nothing else than Jesus. All treasures of wisdom are in Him.

William Randolph Hearst, the billionaire publisher, became rather eccentric in his later years. One day, looking through a book of famous artwork, a painting caught his eye. ‘I want this painting for my collection,’ he said to his aides. But after making some inquiries, his aides reported that they were unable to locate the particular work.

‘If you value your jobs,’ Hearst barked, ‘do whatever it takes to find that treasure, and secure it for me immediately.’

Three and a half months later, the aides returned to Hearst. ‘Did you find the treasure?’ he asked.
‘Yes,’ they replied. ‘After much searching and painstaking research, we found it.’
‘Did you purchase it?’ he asked.
‘No.’
‘Why not?’ Hearst demanded.
‘Because we found it in your warehouse.’

So too, Paul says to the Colossians, ‘You already have all the wisdom and knowledge you will ever need to get through life successfully. It’s all in Christ. When you got Him, you got it all.’

When God says “Go!” ~ Greg Laurie

When God says “Go!”

September 17th, 2009 Posted in OC, Pastor's corner, encouragement, essentials, sermons | No Comments »

This Sunday at Harvest in Riverside I am speaking on the topic of prayer.
This is the final part of our three-part message called “Secrets of Spiritual Growth,” which is part of our larger series Essentials.

We will explore the second half of The Lord’s Prayer. We looked at the first half last Sunday.

One thing we saw together in our last message was how important God’s will and timing is.
One person put it this way:
If the request is wrong, God says, “No.”
If the timing is wrong, God says, “Slow.”
If you are wrong,  God says, “Grow.”
But if the request is right, the timing is right, and you are right, God says, “Go!”
So how can we see God say “Go” and “Yes” more often?
Are there secrets to answered prayer?

I believe the answer to that is yes, and we will discover them tonight in Scripture.

Learn to do everything you do for God's glory ~ Joyce Meyer

And out of the ground the Lord God made to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight or to be desired—good (suitable, pleasant) for food.
—Genesis 2:9

Learn to do everything you do for God's glory, including eating. Look at your dinner plate and ask if what you are about to eat is mostly what God created for you. Don't view eating as a secular event that has nothing to do with your relationship with God. Don't forget that God put Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden and told them what they could eat. If eating had nothing to do with their walk with Him, He probably would not have mentioned food.

Make good choices!

Each time you choose good healthy foods, you are choosing life, which is God's gift to you. He wants you to look great and feel great, and you can, if you keep in mind that your body is the temple of God and the fuel you put into it determines how it will operate and for how long.

God stepped in and got my attention ~ Charles Stanley

God Speaks Through a Friend 1 Samuel 3:1-10

When we're not listening for the Lord's voice, He will often send a message through someone else. In 1 Samuel 3:1-10, for example, young Samuel is confused about what is happening. He hears a person speaking but doesn't recognize it as the voice of God. However, his mentor?Eli, the priest?discerns that the Father was calling, so he tells the boy what to do when the Lord speaks again (v. 9).

In taking his advice, Samuel begins a lifelong career of relaying to others what the voice of God says. This might not have happened, though, if Eli had not given his young helper a word of instruction.

I myself had a similar experience several years ago. A friend called me unexpectedly and said, "While I was praying, God told me to tell you to spend tomorrow in prayer and fasting before you make that decision." This struck me in a mighty way, because I was indeed facing a big decision, but there was no way that my friend could have known about it.

I did what he advised, and through this process, God led me to the answer I needed. In fact, I discovered that I had been moving in the wrong direction and would have made a terrible mistake if my friend hadn't called. However, God stepped in and got my attention in a remarkable way.

When we're going off course, the Lord will sometimes speak through other believers to reach us. Therefore, it is vital to maintain a close network of godly men and women we can trust. Thank the Lord for the Christ-centered people in your life, and pray for wisdom in discerning their counsel.

A hymn about hearing God speak:

Speak, Lord, in the Stillness
Speak, Lord, in the stillness,
While I wait on Thee;
Hushed my heart to listen
In expectancy.
Speak, O blessed Master,
In this quiet hour;
Let me see Thy face, Lord,
Feel Thy touch of power.
For the words Thou speakest,
"They are life," indeed;
Living Bread from heaven,
Now my spirit feed!
All to Thee is yielded,
I am not my own;
Blissful, glad surrender,
I am Thine alone.
Speak, Thy servant heareth!
Be not silent, Lord;
Waits my soul upon Thee
For the quickening word!
Fill me with the knowledge
Of Thy glorious will;
All Thine own good pleasure
In my life fulfill.
Like "a watered garden"
Full of fragrance rare
Ling'ring in Thy presence
Let my life appear.

Once a certain point was reached, that was it! ~ Bob Coy

"Your descendants will be strangers in a land that is not theirs ... But in the fourth generation they shall return here, for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet complete." -Genesis 15:13-16 (NKJV)

As God was establishing His covenant with Abraham, He says something, almost in passing, that reveals an important dimension of His character. After telling Abraham that his descendants would become a mighty nation that would eventually possess the Promised Land, God mentions that this wouldn't happen for a while because the "iniquity of the Amorites" was not yet complete.

What's that all about? The Amorites were the original inhabitants of this land promised to Abraham's descendants. There's no other way to put this. They were a wicked society through and through. Infant sacrifices, bestiality, and just about every other abomination was commonplace.

But notice that God refers to a sort of "iniquity leash" that they hadn't yet come to an end of. It's as if the Lord was watching, waiting, and timing them. Once a certain point was reached, that was it! The land would no longer be theirs but would now become the property of Abraham's descendants (Israel).

So how does this relate to our lives? It shows that there's a divine timetable, that God is keeping track of what's happening, and that He fulfills His will according to this timetable. Israel would inherit the Promised Land, but not one second sooner than God had determined. The same applies to us. God will perform His plans for our lives, but not one second sooner than He has determined.

We often wonder why God is taking so long to do this or that in our lives, but we need to remember that He's watching, waiting, and timing things. He won't rush ahead or fall behind His schedule for us, not by one second, because He's always on time.

Discuss, Dig, Decide

Discuss with your group a time in your life when God seemed to be late according to your timetable. How did God’s plan change your life? As a result of His timeline what fruit was produced in your life?

Dig deeper into Lamentations 3:25–26. As we submit ourselves to God’s timeline, what is His attitude towards us? What is His promise to you? Along with submission, what other qualities should we adopt as we wait for His plan to play out in our lives?

Decide with your group to submit to God’s perfect timeline for your life this week. Take a week to read the story of Joseph in Egypt (Genesis 37–45), and come back next week to share with the group what you discovered.

“I Could Have Had a V8?”

Preparing the Soil (Introduction):  The story is told of a man from England who booked a trip to come to the United States on an ocean liner in the early 1900’s.  He had saved all of his life for this trip, and it was his purpose to live in the U.S. permanently. He brought crackers and bread and ate them alone in his room every day.  Often, when he was among the other passengers, he would hear them talk of the lavish buffet they had had the night before. Sadly, he thought of how much he would have enjoyed such a feast.

Several days into the journey, one of the passengers remarked that she had not seen him in the dining room. “Oh,” he said, “I only booked my passage to America. I didn’t pay for my meals.” Imagine how he felt when they told him the meals were included in the price of the ticket!  No one had told him that his ticket included meals and every other amenity which the liner had to offer.  He hadn’t taken the time to read the details when he bought the ticket.  Isn’t it sad that many Christ Followers live their lives this same way?  Rather than feasting on the promises of God found in His Word, they struggle to live victoriously based on what others have told them.

Planting and Watering the Seed (Growth):  God has promised to give us everything we need for our spiritual growth.  His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. (2 Peter 1:3)

His Word is the banquet table for the nourishment we need to live victorious, God-honoring lives. As Christ Followers, we need to recognize two things about this:  we have a personal responsibility to study God’s Word, the Bible, and to encourage (disciple) other believers to do the same.  The most lavish buffet in the world will not benefit us if we just listen to others talk about how good it was for them.

We must personally partake of the food ourselves.  We must read God’s Word and discover His promises …so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. (2 Peter 1:4)   Once we find a good place to eat, it is natural for us to tell our friends about it.  In the physical world, it’s just another good place to eat. In the spiritual world, it is critical for our spiritual growth to study the Word and encourage others to do so as well.

Harvesting the Crop (Action/Response):  We do not always “feel” our need for spiritual nourishment.  Unfortunately, often it is not until we suffer a setback that we realize we should have been more diligent in our Bible reading.  We need to develop the discipline of a consistent, daily time in the Word to know and experience the promises of God.

As we do, we must also be diligent to … teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. (Colossians 3:16)
