Jesus said, "I am. And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven." Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, "What further need do we have of witnesses? You have heard the blasphemy! What do you think?" And they all condemned Him to be deserving of death. Then some began to spit on Him, and to blindfold Him, and to beat Him, and to say to Him, "Prophesy!" And the officers struck Him with the palms of their hands.
Mark 14:62-65
I wonder what our reactions would have been to people doing what they did to Jesus. Look at the increasing intensity that these people showed toward Jesus.
First, they spit on Him, possibly the most humiliating way you could embarrass somebody. Second, they blindfolded and then beat Him. This was done so that anyone could do anything to Jesus and He wouldn't know who was initiating the punishment. This was -- and still is -- the coward's way to fight.
It shows that these people were real wimps, hiding behind someone's blindfold. Third, the people mocked and swore at Him. I know from personal experience and from counseling many people through the years that, at times, people's words do more damage than physical pain. Our bodies can be healed but emotional scars run deep. Lastly, the people took the palms of their hands and struck Jesus. And these are all things that Jesus experienced before He went to the cross.
I think sometimes we get lulled to sleep living out our lives, and we forget all that He did, and all that we have as believers, because of His suffering and death. I know this passage from Mark really shows a disgusting picture of what happened, but it had to be recorded for us to read so that we would take to heart the great price Jesus Christ paid for our sins. Let it teach us not to take Jesus for granted. Continue every day thanking Him for His sacrifice on the cross and for His love for you. Thank Him for showing His mercy towards you.
This passage also shows us to treat each other with love and respect. Maybe you haven't literally spit on someone or even hit someone, but you've probably gossiped, or lied, or hurt someone with your words. Maybe you got a co-worker fired because you were jealous of them.
Maybe you have made someone's life miserable by the way you've treated them. We ought not to treat people this way.
What we read here is terrible and awful. We should never let ourselves get so far away from the Lord that we forget how to love others and to treat them with the respect that they deserve. Yes, it's tough sometimes to see injustices, but God demands more of us as Christians. After all, look at what His Son experienced for us.
