Seismic Monitor

The above list covers the last two days of significant earthquakes around the world.
Granted, all we are hearing about is the devastation in Haiti (appropriately) and its subsequent carnage, but there is an upward trend in world earthquakes. Additionally, there has been a recent, concerning trend in the California/Nevada region, with approximately 1063 smaller quakes measured over the last week alone (link here).

Jesus said that this last generation would notice earthquakes as a sign - something noteworthy - something getting people's attention. The story in Haiti, resulting from this earthquake will go down in history as one of the most devastating natural catastrophes in history. The number of deaths is now measured in the hundreds of thousands and the resulting carnage is just beginning. Infectious disease, violence, and further aftershocks will contribute.

And of course, the other and highly related sign - famine - has already begun in the region as enough food cannot reach the needy. As in all disasters and during war, famine and pestilence quickly follow; the signs are often highly interrelated.

Recall that it was only a few years ago that an earthquake created a tsunami - causing similar carnage.

And all of this is happening at a time when all of the signs are surging in intensity and frequency:

Just as the revived Roman Empire continues its growth as seen with the developments in the Mediterranean Union.
Just as Swine Flu finally begins to recede from the headlines.
Just as tensions in the Middle East are reaching a pinnacle.
Just as Iran and Russia consolidate their alliance.
Just as we hear about several new "super infections" spreading, such as mutated forms of TB, Malaria and HIV/AIDS to name a few.
Just as the Mediterranean Union selects its leader and splits into a ten nation leadership.
Just as the revived Roman Empire consolidates under their new constitution, the Lisbon Treaty.
Just as the G20, the G7, the UN and other world leaders call for the global financial system and currency.
Just as the rumors of war breaking out in the Middle East - including the possible use of WMDs continue to mount.

The signs are all around us - not just a few, but all of them. All of the signs that we have been given to watch and observe are increasing - exactly as Jesus warned: like birth pains. The earthquake in Haiti just puts an exclamation point on the obvious. The time that Jesus spoke of is rapidly approaching. I repeat - rapidly approaching. Its undeniable.

In the context of the above signs, Jesus made two very simple statements. But typical for Jesus' teachings, these brief statements contain a powerful message.

"When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift your heads, because your redemption is drawing near." (Luke 21:28).
"Even so, when you see these things happening, you know that the kingdom of God is near." (Luke 21:31).

Jesus speaks only in truth.
Anyone who understands basic logic can see the truth here:

Jesus gave us the signs, and the signs are ALL undeniably here.
Jesus also said when we see these signs, His return is near.

Therefore, Jesus' return is near. Its the only logical conclusion.

Keep looking up - just as instructed by Jesus - our redemption is drawing near!

Christian Issues Digest: CCC Media Ministry Records Over 10M Decisions in 2009

CCC Media Ministry Records Over 10M Decisions in 2009

By Eric Young|Christian Post Reporter

The media arm of Campus Crusade for Christ recorded over ten million decisions for Jesus Christ this year, more than doubling their projection for 2009 and more tripling their mark from the year before.

Related

On Thursday, Global Media Outreach announced that it saw the ten millionth person this year indicate a decision for Christ on Dec. 7 at 2 a.m. PT through one of their more than 90 websites. Furthermore, over 1.8 million people have initiated follow-up for more information, guidance and discipleship since the beginning of the year.

“It is humbling to be a part of the Great Commission and watching millions of people coming to Christ,” commented GMO founder and chair Walt Wilson. “We have responders all over the world, connecting to people through e-mail for prayer, discipleship and church connections.”

Since its inception in 2004, GMO has seen the number of people indicating a decision for Christ grow from 21,066 people annually to more than 10 million people in 2009. Last year, more than 3 million people made a decision for Christ and this year, the internet ministry had originally projected around 5 million decisions.

In response to the growing figures, the ministry has been creating more website for individuals who are searching for God online and recruiting more online missionaries, who reply via email to questions posted by seekers, skeptics, and Christians needing support.

Volunteers come from a wide range of professional backgrounds including business executives, housewives, students, truck drivers, and others.

Recruited from evangelical churches and recommended by their pastors, Christians participating in the ministry typically spend only a few minutes a day responding to emails and hold another full-time job.

Still, through these online missionaries, people from places as removed as a small village in Afghanistan have been able to ask questions about Jesus and Christianity.

GMO estimates that 80 to 90 percent of their e-mails are sent from outside the United States. And even many of the English e-mails they receive come from countries such as India and the Philippines.

So high is the volume of e-mail that GMO had to ask Northland, A Church Distributed, a well-known megachurch in Florida, to recruit and train 5,000 online missionaries by 2010.

But even with the help of Northland, the Internet ministry says it needs an additional 3,000, or a total of 10,000, online missionaries to meet the demand.

“Our online presence shows us daily – moment by moment – that the fields are indeed ripe to harvest, yet the laborers are few,” said Wilson earlier this year. “More online missionaries are needed.”

A few months ago, GMO launched “GmoAlwaysReady,” an online missions program available to all churches, to get more churchgoers involved in their Web effort.

GmoAlwaysReady.com is the portal for churches to begin their online missions program and answer the call of the Great Commission,” Wilson explained.

Meanwhile, GMO continues to push forward in expanding its reach by tapping into other emerging communication technologies, including cell phones, Podcasting, internet radio, TV, and film.

Last year, GMO launched a cell phone evangelism program that helps reach people in developing or controlled countries who cannot access a computer or Internet but have mobile phones.

“As the number of cell phone users continues to grow worldwide, we expect to see the percentage of decisions through cell phones go even higher,” the ministry had reported.

GMO is currently sowing the seed of the Gospel daily in 191 countries in 11 major internet languages.

One of GMO’s goals is to present the gospel in the top internet languages, namely English, Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, German, French, Korean, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Arabic, and Russian. Together, these languages cover 85 percent of the world’s 1 billion internet users, the ministry noted.

In 2009, GMO presented the Gospel to over 63 million people through its more than 90 different websites globally.

GMO websites include WhoisJesus-Really.com, GodLovestheWorld.com, 4StepstoGod.com, and GrowinginChrist.com, among many others.

Christian Issues Digest: Pastor Chuck Smith to Be Released from Hospital

Pastor Chuck Smith to Be Released from Hospital

Southern California megachurch pastor Chuck Smith is expected to be released this week from rehabilitation after suffering a minor stroke more than a week ago.

Mon, Jan. 04, 2010 Posted: 11:58 PM EDT

Southern California megachurch pastor Chuck Smith is expected to be released this week from rehabilitation after suffering a minor stroke more than a week ago.

“Pastor Chuck has made great progress,” reported staff at Smith’s church, Calvary Chapel of Costa Mesa in Santa Ana, Calif.

“He is hoping to resume his old schedule as soon as possible,” they added in the church’s website.

Smith had been rushed to the hospital in the late evening of Dec. 26 after having what his doctor described as a “mini stroke.” Though he was originally expected to leave the hospital after 48 hours of being monitored, Smith remained hospitalized for several days more and did not move into the rehabilitation stage of his recovery until around the middle of last week.

Smith, who discipled church leaders such as Greg Laurie of Harvest Christian Fellowship in Riverside, Calif., and Skip Heitzig of Calvary of Albuquerque in New Mexico, is senior pastor of Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa and a recognized speaker at pastors conferences.

Since Smith started pastoring Calvary Chapel in 1965, the congregation has grown from 25 people to a weekly attendance of 9,500.

The church has also been responsible for more than 1,500 church plants, including a few that have grown to become larger than the one in Santa Ana.

Calvary Chapel churches in America include the 13,000-large Calvary Chapel in Albuquerque, N.M.; the 11,000-large Calvary Community Church in Phoenix, Ariz.; the 10,000-large Calvary Chapel South Bay in Gardena, Calif.; the 10,000-large Calvary Chapel of Philadelphia; and the 7,000-large Harvest Christian Fellowship in Riverside.

Smith was ordained by the International Church of the Foursquare Gospel but left the denomination in the 1960s.

Christian Issues Digest: Does God Hate Haiti? - Albert Mohler (BPT)

Does God Hate Haiti?

By Albert Mohler

The images streaming in from Haiti look like scenes from Dante's Inferno. The scale of the calamity is unprecedented. In many ways, Haiti has almost ceased to exist.

The earthquake that will forever change that nation came as subterranean plates shifted about six miles under the surface of the earth, along a fault line that had threatened trouble for centuries. But no one saw a quake of this magnitude coming. The 7.0 quake came like a nightmare, with the city of Port-au-Prince crumbling, entire villages collapsing, bodies flying in the air and crushed under mountains of debris. Orphanages, churches, markets, homes, and government buildings all collapsed. Civil government has virtually ceased to function. Without power, communication has been cut off and rescue efforts are seriously hampered. Bodies are piling up, hope is running out, and help, though on the way, will not arrive in time for many victims.

Even as boots are finally hitting the ground and relief efforts are reaching the island, estimates of the death toll range as high as 500,000. Given the mountainous terrain and dense villages that had been hanging along the fault line, entire villages may have disappeared. The Western Hemisphere's most impoverished nation has experienced a catastrophe that appears almost apocalyptic.

In truth, it is hard not to describe the earthquake as a disaster of biblical proportions. It certainly looks as if the wrath of God has fallen upon the Caribbean nation. Add to this the fact that Haiti is well known for its history of religious syncretism - mixing elements of various faiths, including occultic practices. The nation is known for voodoo, sorcery, and a Catholic tradition that has been greatly influenced by the occult.

Haiti's history is a catalog of political disasters, one after the other. In one account of the nation's fight for independence from the French in the late 18th century, representatives of the nation are said to have made a pact with the Devil to throw off the French. According to this account, the Haitians considered the French as Catholics and wanted to side with whomever would oppose the French. Thus, some would use that tradition to explain all that has marked the tragedy of Haitian history - including now the earthquake of January 12, 2010.

Does God hate Haiti? That is the conclusion reached by many, who point tothe earthquake as a sign of God's direct and observable judgment.

God does judge the nations - all of them - and God will judge the nations. His judgment is perfect and his justice is sure. He rules over all the nations and his sovereign will is demonstrated in the rising and falling of nations and empires and peoples. Every molecule of matter obeys his command, and the earthquakes reveal his reign - as do the tides of relief and assistance flowing into Haiti right now.

A faithful Christian cannot accept the claim that God is a bystander in world events. The Bible clearly claims the sovereign rule of God over all his creation, all of the time. We have no right to claim that God was surprised bythe earthquake in Haiti, or to allow that God could not have prevented it from happening.

God's rule over creation involves both direct and indirect acts, but his rule is constant. The universe, even after the consequences of the Fall, still demonstrates the character of God in all its dimensions, objects, and occurrences. And yet, we have no right to claim that we know why a disaster like the earthquake in Haiti happened at just that place and at just that moment.

The arrogance of human presumption is a real and present danger. We can trace the effects of a drunk driver to a car accident, but we cannot trace the effects of voodoo to an earthquake - at least not so directly. Will God judge Haiti for its spiritual darkness? Of course. Is the judgment of God something we can claim to understand in this sense - in the present? No, we are not given that knowledge. Jesus himself warned his disciples against this kind of presumption.

Why did no earthquake shake Nazi Germany? Why did no tsunami swallow up the killing fields of Cambodia? Why did Hurricane Katrina destroy far more evangelical churches than casinos? Why do so many murderous dictators live to old age while many missionaries die young?

Does God hate Haiti? God hates sin, and will punish both individual sinners and nations. But that means that every individual and every nation will be found guilty when measured by the standard of God's perfect righteousness. God does hate sin, but if God merely hated Haiti, there would be no missionaries there; there would be no aid streaming to the nation; there would be no rescue efforts - there would be no hope.

The earthquake in Haiti, like every other earthly disaster, reminds us that the creation it groaning under the weight of sin and the judgment of God. This is true for every cell in our bodies, even as it is for the crust of the earth at every point in the globe. The entire cosmos is awaiting the revelation of the glory of the coming Lord. Creation cries out the hope of New Creation.

In other words, the earthquake reminds us that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is the only real message of hope. The cross of Christ declares that Jesus loves Haiti - and the Haitian people are the objects of his love. Christ would have us show the Haitian nation his love, and share his Gospel. In the midst of this unspeakable tragedy, Christ would have us rush to aid the suffering people of Haiti, and rush to tell the Haitian people of his love, his cross, and salvation in his name alone.

Everything about the tragedy in Haiti points to our need for redemption. This tragedy may lead to a new openness to the Gospel among the Haitian people. That will be to the glory of God. In the meantime, Christ's people must do everything we can to alleviate the suffering, bind up the wounded, and comfort the grieving. If Christ's people are called to do this, how can we say that God hates Haiti?

If you have any doubts about this, take your Bible and turn to John 3:16.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

That is God's message to Haiti.

Christian Issues Digest: Renowned Theologian Seeks to Recatechize Christians

Renowned Theologian Seeks to Recatechize Christians

Influential theologian J.I. Packer wants evangelical churches to recover catechesis, which he believes is an alien concept to most evangelicals.

Thu, Jan. 14, 2010 Posted: 07:03 PM EDT

Influential theologian J.I. Packer wants evangelical churches to recover catechesis, or systematic instruction in the essentials of the Christian faith.

Packer believes the idea is an alien concept to most evangelicals.

"We are drifting back into paganism, that’s the truth," he said in a lecture last Saturday at St. Matthew’s Cathedral in Dallas, according to The Living Church News Service.

The 83-year-old Anglican priest has co-authored a new book, Grounded in the Gospel: Building Believers the Old-Fashioned Way, in which he makes the case that catechesis is a nonnegotiable practice of churches and is of no less value than Bible study and expository preaching.

During Saturday's lecture, he said he yearns for "Bible-based, Christ-centered, declarative in style." But recovering catechesis in churches will be a challenge, he added. Earlier, he called it the greatest challenge for the 21st century church.

It's "ridiculous to think that no more learning of the faith is necessary after confirmation has taken place," the renowned theologian noted, as reported by The Living Church News Service. "Ongoing learning is part of the calling of the Church. It has to be taught in all churches at all times."

In 2008, Packer and 10 other clergy left the Anglican Church of Canada over its liberal direction on scriptural authority and homosexuality. He joined the more conservative and orthodox Province

Christian Issues Digest: My Predictions for Christianity and Evangelism Over the Next Decade

My Predictions for Christianity and Evangelism Over the Next Decade

Economic strain will force churches to go primal. The new spirituality will leave “that old time religion” in the dust. Evangelism will become a hate crime in America.

Tue, Jan. 05, 2010 Posted: 11:17 AM EDT

I am not a prophet or the son of a prophet. To make matters worse, I stink at Fantasy football. I think Astrology is a crock (although I do read my “fortune” in those delicious, little cookies and now know that my lucky numbers are 4,16,19 and 24.) So with those awkward qualifications in place here are my predictions for Christianity over the next ten years.

1. Economic strain will force churches to go primal.

With a national dept that is catapulting toward the unstoppable, it’s only a matter of time before the United States goes bankrupt and the “new” new reality hits Americans and American churches like never before. I am convinced that the current recession is just an appetizer to the main course of soup lines, increased joblessness and the impending bankruptcy of the United States.

I’m no economist, but I can do Kindergarten math. Financing two wars + universal health care + a government that is growing faster than a baseball player on steroids = probable bankruptcy, not just for the nation, but for a lot of Americans and the ministries they support.

Is this inevitable? Of course not! Congress could choose to attack the deficit and get this nation right side up before it’s too late. But, even if they don’t, is this all bad news? No! I believe that, if or when the economy of America collapses, that many churches and ministries will go primal in their purpose, priorities and programs. Bigger and better church buildings will become a thing of the past and loving one’s neighbor by engaging, serving and introducing them to the Lord Jesus Christ will become central to the focus of thriving churches.

In his book Primal: Quest for the Lost Soul of Christianity, Mark Batterson writes, “Our generation needs a reformation. But a single person won’t lead it. A single event won’t define it. Our reformation will be a movement of reformers living creatively, compassionately, courageously for the cause of Christ. This reformation will not be born of a new discovery. It will be the rediscovery of something old, something ancient. Something primal.”

Hooah! Count me in Captain Batterson sir!

In light of shrinking donations churches and parachurch ministries will be forced to re-evaluate the reason for their existence. The ones that survive, and then thrive, will have the advancement of the gospel through peer-to-peer evangelism and love-your-neighbor campaigns as their new bull’s eye.

Pastors, youth pastors and ministry leaders of all stripes will scour the New Testament, under the direction of the Holy Spirit, to rediscover their calling. Armed with “the weapons of righteousness” in their right hands and in their left, ministry leaders will become elemental in their focus and re-engineer their churches to look more and more like the book of Acts and less and less like the typical church of the first decade of the 21st Century.

2. The new spirituality will leave “that old time religion” in the dust.

According to the book UnChristian 40% of those between the ages of 16-29 in America consider themselves outsiders to the Christian faith. That’s up from 23% among baby boomers! The historic Christian faith is losing trajectory with the younger generation and is being replaced by an “all roads lead to God” type of quasi-spirituality. This kind of philosophy is more eastern than western and more Buddhist than Christian. And, in my estimation, this spiritual point of view will accelerate across every corner of the United States over the next ten years.

Just two years ago I had the opportunity of leading a reality series called Gospel Journey Maui with a Mormon, Muslim, Buddhist, Jew, Seventh Day Adventist and an evangelical. Most of these participants were in their late teens or early twenties. Instead of tribal challenges we tackled tough issues like the existence of God, the problem of evil and the purpose of life. We had amazing conversations on a boat, at the top of a volcano, on the beach, and, finally, in a leper colony. Every participant shared what they believed from their religious point of view. I listened, learned, asked questions and, toward the end of every episode, shared what the Bible had to say about that particular subject.

What surprised me throughout the week of filming was that, other than the evangelical and the Muslim participants, every one of these young people had developed some altered, watered-down, Americanized version of the religion they claimed to follow. Each one had dressed their individual religion with whatever accessories he or she saw fit. Most of them presented their beliefs with a kind of “this is true for me but not necessarily for you” qualification. It became clear to me that they were more alike than different in their worldview, even if their religions differed on the finer points. This overarching spirituality was really the one religion that united most of them at their philosophic core. And it is the same spiritual philosophy that will dominate in the next decade.

This belief system is hard to nail down doctrinally because there is no formal creed. But it has something to do with being nice, going green and tolerating others. The only thing that won’t be tolerated is any belief system that claims to be the exclusive way to God. I believe that this will lead to a growing tension between those who espouse this philosophy and those who embrace the historic Christian faith. This inevitable tension leads to my third prediction for Christianity and evangelism over the next ten years.

3. Evangelism will become a hate crime in America.

Maybe evangelism will be considered a misdemeanor as opposed to a felony, but I’m convinced that sharing one’s faith, with the intention to convert that person to Christianity, will be outlawed in the good ole’ US of A. The First Amendment will be “contextualized” for a postmodern culture by postmodern judges and, as a result, any speech or actions that seem intolerant will be considered intolerable.

Is there anything less tolerant than telling someone that they are on the highway to hell unless they change their way of thinking (i.e. “repent”) and put their faith in Christ alone for the salvation of their souls? Strip away all of the fancy trappings, snappy gospel tracts and cool conversation openers and that’s exactly what evangelism is. Even when we say it nice we will be told not to say it twice. Why? Because we will be sharing a message that points to Jesus as “the way and the truth and the life” to a generation that has no patience for narrow minded thinking. And does it get any more narrow minded than to declare Jesus alone as the narrow path that leads to life everlasting? As one sage put it, “All roads lead to God…most to His judgment, one to His forgiveness.”

Two millennia ago in the Roman Empire if you said “Jesus is Lord” you were dangerously close to signing your death warrant. Jews thought Christians were blasphemous because they were assigning deity to a man. Romans thought Christians were treasonous because the man they were assigning deity to was a poor Jewish carpenter and not the mighty Emperor of Rome.

The same brand of treasonous blasphemy that got Christians killed thousands of years ago will get Christians arrested in America over the next ten years. Hate speech will be the law that triggers the trials. As Alan Sears, President of the Alliance Defense Fund, once told me, “The persectution of the 21st Century will be prosecution.”

A milder form of this persecution is happening right now in secular universities and Hollywood studios. How many evangelical freshmen in philosophy classes across America have been taunted by bowtie wearing, atheistic professors? Too many to count! How many unflattering caricatures of evangelizing Christians been painted in movies and television shows? Too many to count! And when the ideals of the secular university and Hollywood studios trickle down to the working class, a legal predisposition against evangelism (aka “proselytizing”) will be the result.

But maybe that’s just what the American church needs…a swift kick in the “but I preach the gospel without words” to trigger the actual proclamation of the gospel to friends, family, neighbors and strangers. Maybe when evangelism becomes illegal we will do more of it.

I love my job now but I think I’ll love my job even more over the next one hundred and twenty months. As the President of Dare 2 Share Ministries, an organization that mobilizes teenagers for peer-to-peer evangelism, I may get to, not only train teenagers to please God by sharing their faith, but to promote something illegal at the same time! When teens begin to realize that they could get thrown in jail for sharing their faith it could lead to an unstoppable movement of relational, relentless and rebellious evangelists who sweep the nation with acts of love and the message of Christ!

Maybe I’ll get to start a prison ministry as a result…from the inside.

4. Missions organizations will work together for the fulfillment of THE Cause!

What has been known for three hundred years as “The Great Commission” will get rebranded as “THE Cause.” Why? Missions organizations will realize that the TGC term was popularized by missionaries centuries ago with the express purpose of mobilizing young people for world missions. As mission leaders realize that most Christian young people have no clue what The Great Commission is they will begin to reframe the call of Jesus to “make disciples of all nations” as a cause rather than a commission. Because it is no mere cause it will be called THE Cause.

More and more of these organizations will begin to synthesize strategies, coordinate efforts and share resources to get the last and lasting mandate of Jesus accomplished. As they do their efforts will be exponentially accelerated as key organizations push the giant flywheel of world evangelization in the same direction.

Missions work will become more and more about training indigenous people to contextualize and evangelize their own people rather than missionaries seeking to do all of the evangelism themselves. We see the apostle Paul switching to this tactic midway through his missionary career.

When Paul evangelized in Ephesus Acts 19:8, he went into the Synagogue and preached the gospel there. This was his usual approach when coming into a new city. As a result of this strategy several Jews in Ephesus trusted in Jesus Christ as their Savior. But in verses 9-10 Paul changes his tactics. He took the people who had trusted in Jesus at the synagogue to the School of Tyrannus, a local community college, and trained them every day for two years so that “every Jew and Greek in the province of Asia heard the word of the Lord.”

How did every person in this vast region hear the gospel in such a short time? The men and women the apostle Paul equipped at the School of Tyrannus evangelized everyone in the province of Asia! They were able to do collectively in two years what the great apostle could not do his entire life, reach every person in such a large region with the gospel!

As mission organizations take hold of this School of Tyrannus strategy they will see the same results as Paul did. Entire countries will be evangelized by their own countrymen as missionaries focus on mobilizing (inspiring, equipping and deploying) those they lead to Christ to make disciples as opposed to trying to do all of the disciple making themselves.

Churches and youth groups in America will get in on the action too. Effective stateside ministries will focus more and more on seeking to be Schools of Tyrannus that train their people to reach their spheres of influence with the gospel as opposed to just inviting them out to “the synagogue” (church, youth group, outreach meeting) so that the person upfront can do the work of evangelism for them. This approach will lead to the exponential spread of the gospel in America and across the world, which leads to my final prediction for the next decade.

5. An army of youth evangelists will unleash holy havoc across the globe.

To bolster this worldwide evangelism effort, I believe that God will raise up an army of youth evangelists (both in and out of high school) who will embrace the gospel as THE Cause and spread it to the ends of the earth both online and face-to-face. The average teenager has over one hundred online and face-to-face friends and, according to one survey, these teenagers have one hundred times more influence on their friends than a stranger does.

As Christian teenagers are equipped to evangelize their sphere of influence in compelling ways that gospel will spread in powerful ways. As a result even more persecution will take place. This will inspire aligned and united missions organizations to mobilize persecution-hardened, cause-inspired young people for global outreach. As some in Thessalonica said about the early Christian evangelists in Acts 17:6 they will say about these young world changers, “These…who have caused trouble all over the world have now come here…”

In ten years I believe there will be disciple-multiplying teenagers in every one of the 67,342 high schools and middle schools in America. The coming, inevitable revocation of The Student Bill of Rights (a bill signed into law by Bill Clinton which gives students the rights to evangelize on campus) will only inspire more teenagers to engage in reaching others with the controversial message of the gospel.

Youth groups and churches will begin to grow as a result of new converts being added to their rosters at a rapid rate. These churches will start to gauge their effectiveness, not by how many people go to their meetings, but by what percentage of them came to Christ as result of their personal evangelism efforts.

A FINAL DISCLAIMER

What makes me qualified to make these predictions? Other than the fact that I once ran into George Barna at the airport, absolutely nothing. Sure I used to be a pastor a church and currently train teens to live THE Cause I’m pretty much just a guy with a Bible and a blog. I could be totally wrong about what is going to happen to Christianity and evangelism over the next decade. But, even if half of my predictions come three quarters true, this has huge implications for the church, youth ministry and world evangelism.

Talk to me in ten years and you can either slap me in the face or pat me on the back.

'God Is' Ad Campaign to Hit 1,000 NYC Subways

Pro-God ads will hit some 1,000 subway cars throughout New York City beginning Friday, announced the New York church sponsoring the campaign.

Wed, Jan. 13, 2010 Posted: 06:07 PM EDT

Pro-God ads will hit some 1,000 subway cars throughout New York City beginning Friday, announced the New York church sponsoring the campaign.

Times Square Church, located in the heart of Times Square in New York City, will launch its ad campaign in hundreds of subway cars and on 50 platform posters in Manhattan stations at the end of this week.

Ads will boldly feature the words “God is” in the center, surrounded by words describing God’s qualities in colorful fonts. Among the “God is” attributes are: with you, willing to help, able to protect, a father, a husband to the widow, your friend, aware of your struggle, a good listener, the one who loves you, power to change, incredible, ready to forgive, there when no one else is, looking at you, Jesus.

“We want to encourage people to seek God and prove that indeed He is,” explains Carter Conlon, senior pastor of Times Square Church. “The ads describe God in just a few of the infinite ways He proves His presence to us every day.”

Bringing God into the public square is nothing new to Times Square Church. In September, the church hosted “Prayer in the Square” that attracted as many as 60,000 people representing over 300 churches and 65 youth organizations for an hour of prayer in Times Square.

In its latest attempt to get people talking about God and religion, the church hopes to not just draw unbelievers, but also former believers.

“We are praying that people who don’t know God and would like to know Him, would be moved by these ads to visit Times Square Church or any Bible believing church in New York City and find God through the forgiveness freely offered through His Son, Jesus Christ,” Conlon said. “And to those who once knew God and need to get back to God, we want to say simply this: His arms are open wide always ready to welcome you home.”

Times Square Church is an inter-denominational,multinational congregation founded by best-selling author, the Rev. David Wilkerson, who wrote The Cross and the Switchblade. More than 8,000 people, representing more than 100 different nationalities, gather to worship each week at Times Square Church.

Rediscovering Our Roots

When Athens Met Jerusalem

By Chuck Colson|Christian Post Guest Columnist

“What has Athens to do with Jerusalem?”

That famous question was asked by the church father Tertullian, some 20 centuries ago. He was trying to make the point that the philosophy of the Greeks and the theology of the Christians were incompatible.

But Tertullian may have had it wrong, in part. As Dr. John Mark Reynolds of Biola University points out, “The very Greek language that the early Christians used to communicate their message was soaked in centuries of classical thought. Trying to pry Athens and Jerusalem apart usually led to inconsistency and heresy.”

Even Tertullian himself, Reynolds says, “echoed Greek philosophy on nearly every page” of his writings, whether he was aware of it or not!

But to this day, for many people-including many Christians-the old tension between theology and philosophy, between faith and reason, still exists. So Reynolds’ new book, When Athens Met Jerusalem: An Introduction to Classical and Christian Thought, is an attempt to show not only that faith and reason can co-exist, but that they need each other to survive.

Reynolds writes, “Jerusalem gave the world truth; Athens gave it a valid way to express that truth. Out of this creative harmony came the classical Christian civilizations that shaped most of the world in which we live.”

In his position as a Christian writer and educator, Reynolds sees it as his mission to help restore that “creative harmony” that will allow both faith and reason to thrive in a world so desperately needing them.

Much of the book, therefore, is spent studying the classical roots of Western culture.

Reynolds takes us on a tour of Greek philosophy from the pre-Socratic thinkers, through Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle, all the way to the groups who were present on Mars Hill to hear the apostle Paul make his famous speech there.

In many ways, all of Greek philosophy, in its long search for truth and enlightenment, was leading up to that moment. It was Christianity, Reynolds says, that answered the questions the philosophers had not been able to answer.

Though not all of his listeners accepted Paul’s teachings, Paul demonstrated there in the center of Greek learning and culture that the Christian faith “had the intellectual and moral energy that paganism and philosophy had lost.” The stage was set for Christianity’s triumph over pagan thought.

Dr. Reynolds argues that it’s critically important for Christians to know at least something about this history. I agree. Rodney Stark, in his great book The Victory of Reason, argues that Christianity rescued reason, a point I make in my book The Faith. This is also why I so strongly support Christian and classical schools.

Although there are dangers in philosophy unchecked by Christian worldview, there are also great rewards when the reader has a “mental interaction with the Bible,” as Dr. Reynolds puts it. “Wicked ideas in the ancients illuminate the power of Scripture. True ideas in the ancients expand the world presented in the Bible or illuminate in a fresh way truths already present there,” he wrote.

When Athens Met Jerusalem makes a powerful case for learning all we can about how these ideas interacted to shape our world, our thinking, and our faith. You can get this, and the other books I’ve mentioned, at our bookstore at BreakPoint.org.

Christian Issues Digest: How to be Patient in 2010 -Rick Warren

How to be Patient in 2010

What skills and virtues make effective ministers? Strong public speaking skills, leadership, compassion? Most likely patience won’t make your list.

Fri, Jan. 15, 2010 Posted: 01:46 PM EDT

What skills and virtues make effective ministers? Strong public speaking skills, leadership, compassion? Most likely patience won’t make your list.

But when the apostle Paul defines the kind of love that is the foundation of ministry in 1 Corinthians 13, he starts with patience.

God says to truly demonstrate the kind of love that all ministry should be based on, you’ve got to start with patience. Why? He’s had several thousand years experience dealing with people! His love through the centuries has been demonstrated over and over again by patience. He expects our love to be patient as well.

And, pastor, you’ll find all sorts of opportunities to demonstrate patience in ministry this year. Disgruntled parishioners, demanding leaders – even your family will give you lots of chances to build upon this important virtue.

The Greek word for patience literally means, “It takes a long time to boil.” Pastor, do you take a long time to boil? You should.

The Bible tells everyone in 1 Thessalonians 5:14b (NIV) to “be patient with everyone.” Notice that God commands this. He doesn’t suggest it. God never tells us to do something without showing us how to do it. Here’s what the Bible has to say about becoming more patient:

   1. Remember how patient God has been with you.

You’ll never have to be more patient with anyone else than God has been with you. In 1 Timothy 1:16b (NIV) Paul says, “I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst sinner, Christ might display his unlimited patience.” God choose Paul despite the fact that he was a persecutor of the church. God showed unlimited patience to him. And, pastor, he shows unlimited to patience to you and I as well.

Romans 15:7a (NIV) says, “Accept each other just as Christ has accepted you.” The reason we should accept other people is that God has accepted us. The reason we are to be patient with other people is that God has been patient with us. That’s the starting point for learning to be patient in 2010.

   2. Learn by listening.

Proverbs 14:29a (NIV) says, “A patient man has great understanding.” You’ve got to have understanding to show patience. The Bible says the key to patience is understanding. No doubt you’ve seen this in your life. When you understand someone, you’re more patient with him or her.

If you don’t understand them, you’re not going to be patient with them. You understand people by listening to them. Proverbs 18:13 in the Message paraphrase says, “Answering before listening is both stupid and rude.” In other words, don’t evaluate what people do or what they say until you’ve heard it all.

Most of us pastors think we’re pretty good listeners. But are we? Research shows that only seven percent of the meaning of what you say is communicated in words. Another 42 percent of that meaning comes from how you say what you say (vocal tone, pitch, volume, and delivery). The remaining 50 percent of the meaning is communicated through non-verbal language (facial expression, hand gestures, and body language). Pastor, that’s why phone calls are only about 50 percent effective! You can’t see what the other person is communicating through his or her body.

To be more patient in 2010, you need to listen more. Listen with your whole body because listening is as much about your eyes as your ears.

   3. Make allowances for each other.

Everybody’s got bad days. We’re all flaky from time to time. Kay knows when I have touchy times. In fact, I have two of them in particular – Monday mornings and the night before I preach. I’m sure you can relate. On Monday morning I’m beat from preaching and interacting with people all weekend long. The night before I preach I’m touchy because I have PMS – Pre-Message Syndrome. Kay makes allowances for that. She realizes those are bad days, and she cuts me a break. If you’re going to be more patient in 2010, you’ll need to give people a break from time to time.

The Bible says, “Be patient with each other, making allowances for each other’s faults, because of your love” (Ephesians 4:2 NLT). Sometimes the people you’re dealing with are just having a bad day. Resist the urge to retaliate. Show your love by making allowances for their faults – and bad days.

   4. Treat others the way you want to be treated.

Of course, that’s the Golden Rule. “Always treat others as you’d like them to treat you.” That single sentence could save most relationships. This is easy to understand but difficult to practice.

Philippians 2:4-5 (NLT) says, “Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.” To be more patient in 2010, take some time to discover what other people are interested in. That’s not just a good practice for patience; it’s a crucial pastoral practice. Make it your priority this year to get to know the people in your circle of influence – from your spouse to your kids to your staff. What makes the people in your life tick? You need to know. It’ll let you know how they want to be treated and will make you far more patient this year.

Christian Issues Digest: JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES -Daymond Duck

 JEHOVAH’S WITNESSES

By Daymond Duck

The World Book Dictionary says, “A cult is a group or sect whose practices or beliefs are separated from generally accepted values and creeds.” One of their most common traits is the fact that they look to a person or group other than the Bible for spiritual revelation. So by definition and trait Jehovah’s Witnesses are a cult.

Jehovah’s Witnesses depend upon the “Watchtower Magazine” and “Awake Magazine” for spiritual revelation. These two publications are printed in Brooklyn, NY by the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society.

This society was started by Mr. Charles T. Russell. He didn’t agree with the generally accepted beliefs that most churches held about hell and eternal judgment. He also didn’t believe in the Trinity. Instead of falling in line, he started his own group.

According to the Bible, God’s true prophets had to be right one hundred percent of the time. It also says no one knows when the Lord will return. Charles T. Russell departed from this. He said Jesus would return in 1876. It didn’t happen. He departed from the Scriptures and he was wrong. This makes him a false prophet.

The Bible tells us not to add to or take away from the Scriptures (Revelation 22:18-19).

Over the years, scholars have found the Watchtower and Bible Tract Society wrong about many things. Instead of correcting their mistakes, they produced their own translation of the Bible. They changed words to make the Bible fit their own theology.

Here are several things the “Organization” teaches:

1) They say Jesus is a created being (The Bible says Jesus is the Creator).

2) They say Jesus is actually Michael the Archangel (The Bible says Jesus is the Son of God).

3) They say Jesus was not resurrected bodily, but as a spirit being (The Bible says His body disappeared. He appeared to His disciples and told them to look at His flesh and bones.)

4) They say Jesus returned invisibly in 1914 and appeared secretly to the Organization. (The Bible says He will return the same way He went away which was visibly and every eye will see Him.).

5) They say Jesus was a man when He was on the earth and that He was not “the Word made flesh.” They say He should not be worshipped. (That’s the exact opposite of what the Bible says).

6) They say hell is the grave (They have rewritten the Bible and changed words to make it say this).

7) They say heaven’s doors are open to only 144,000 and the rest of the saved will spend eternity on a paradise earth (The Bible says differently).

8) They say salvation is only through their “Organization.” (The Bible says it’s only through Jesus.

8) They say the doctrine of the Trinity originated with Satan (The Bible which was given by the Holy Spirit teaches that there is a Godhead.).

Jehovah’s Witnesses work hard, but works won’t save them. They need to receive Jesus as their Saviour.
