Putin denounces West for adopting ‘missile-bomb democracy’ Tue Jul 10, 2012 3:15AM GMT
Russian President Vladimir Putin has condemned the West for its interventionism and the adoption of "missile-bomb democracy" in solving international disputes.
Speaking in Moscow on Monday to Russian ambassadors serving across the world, Putin lashed out at the West for taking unilateral steps to resolve international conflicts instead of going through the United Nations.
“This is a fact. Hence, attempts by individual players in international politics to perpetuate their habitual influence and gain geopolitical benefits by all means. This can be seen from the so-called humanitarian operations, from exports of the ‘missile-bomb’ democracy and intervention in internal conflicts, including those bred by the ‘Arab Spring,’” the Russian president said.
Putin described such unilateral measures as being against international law, and said that they amounted to interference in the internal affairs of sovereign countries.
He also denounced the West's military intervention in Libya in 2011 and said he will not allow a similar scenario to be repeated for Syria.
"The tragedy [that] occurred in Libya indisputably stand[s] before our eyes and it should not be repeated in other countries such as Syria," Putin noted.
The Russian chief executive urged the country’s ambassadors to be on guard against a backlash from Moscow's former Cold War enemies.
"Be ready for any development of the situation, even for the most unfavorable development," he said in the 20-minute speech.
He also pointed out that the West's influence was waning around the word due to the economic meltdown.
"Domestic socio-economic problems that have become worse in industrialized countries as a result of the (economic) crisis are weakening the dominant role of the so-called historical West," he added.
