There will be times every leader must take risks to further the mission. Read John 2:12-22.
Following His miracle at the wedding in Cana (Verses 1-11) Jesus traveled with His family and disciples to Jerusalem for the Passover celebration.
Upon His arrival He went to the temple and became disturbed by the way religious leaders had allowed venders to turn the temple courts into a marketplace. Jesus’ passion for His Father’s house rose to the surface and He drove the vendors, cattle, and sheep from the courts and in the process tipped over the tables of the money changers and sent the coins flying onto the floor.
In His zeal for His Father’s House, Jesus took a huge risk that He would antagonize or even enrage the religious leaders and alienate the crowds, the very people He came to reach with God’s message of salvation.
As a leader, Jesus demonstrated that effective leaders will take a calculated risk rather than sit idle when a situation demands action.
There will be a time when leaders must take risks in order to be effective as they advance their cause. In my personal leadership, I can point to key moments in every position I have held when I made a conscious decision to risk it all to further the cause.
At one point, while serving as Director of Operations for the film division of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, a film had been scripted and we were at the point of signing production contracts when my boss informed me he did not like the subject matter in the film and he would sign the production contracts only if I insisted the film would be a quality product and get the desired results.
He made it “very” clear I would be held accountable for the results. The film is still shown around the world today and continues to deliver an effective message of the enduring love of Jesus.
As you cultivate your leadership skills are you willing to take risks?
Do you fear the failure that is associated with risk?
Like Jesus, strong leaders will take calculated risks when those risks are the best way to further their mission.
