Unexpected rise in US jobless claims
The number of US workers claiming jobless benefits for the first time recorded an unexpected rise last week, diminishing some of the recent signs of hope for the labour market. Initial jobless claims rose by 18,000 to 460,000 last week, labour department figures showed on Thursday. Economists were expecting claims to decline.
Iran minister: US hikers 'had intelligence links'
Iran's intelligence minister has said there is evidence that three US hikers it is holding had links to intelligence agencies, according to Iran's Press TV. The families of the hikers, who Iran has held in jail since last July, say they strayed across the border accidentally while hiking in Iraq. Heydar Moslehi said the evidence would soon be made public, the report said.
Australia halts Sri Lankan and Afghan asylum claims
Australia has announced the immediate suspension of all new asylum claims by people from Sri Lanka and Afghanistan. Immigration Minister Chris Evans said the decision had been made "in the light of changing circumstances" in those countries. He added that the move would "send a strong message to people smugglers".
Brazil battles to rescue hundreds buried in landslide
Rescue teams in Brazil are working for a second night to find 200 people believed to have been buried in their homes by a massive landslide. More than 50 houses were engulfed as mud and rubble poured into the Morro do Bumba shantytown near Rio de Janeiro. At least 170 people died after a week of heavy rain prompted mudslides and floods in Rio de Janeiro state.
MEPs seek change to Lisbon Treaty to accommodate new colleagues
Keen to see 18 new brethren join their parliamentary flock, the European Parliament's constitutional affairs committee has given member states the nod to push ahead with changes to the EU's Lisbon Treaty, just months after it was finally ratified. ..."The European Council now has a green light to take the decision next June in a brief Intergovernmental Conference," said Mr Mendez de Vigo. "We are not going to call for a Convention beforehand as this is a transitional and exceptional measure that will not constitute, in any way, a precedent for the future."
Russian gas pipeline plans make progress
Russian and EU officials will on Friday (9 April) mark the start of construction of the Nord Stream gas pipeline, as Russia strengthens its grip on EU gas supply despite concerns about its reliability. Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, EU energy commissioner Gunther Oettinger, Dutch leader Jan Peter Balkenende and French secretary of state Anne-Marie Idrac are to attend the ceremony in Vyborg, Russia. German Chancellor Angela Merkel is to take part by video-link.
Greek turmoil raises prospect of imminent bail-out
Fresh doubts over Greece's ability to meet upcoming debt obligations resulted in record high borrowing costs for the country on Thursday (8 April), ravaging stocks and leading analysts to suggest now was the time to call in EU/IMF support. "It is now up to the Greek government to go publicly to the EU and IMF and ask for the cash and the support; the matter cannot be long delayed," said Chris Pryce, a senior analyst with Fitch ratings agency, reports Reuters.
Russia: Iran should start negotiating
Ambassadors from China and five major powers met for the first time Thursday to discuss possible new sanctions against Iran... After nearly three hours of talks, Russia's UN Ambassador Vitaly Churkin told reporters "we all agreed that it was a good discussion." ..."I don't think any of us want to impose sanctions," he said. "What we want to have is a diplomatic solution, and all sorts of constructive proposals have been made to Iran. So if ... Iran wants to negotiate they should start negotiating."
