Defense Secretary Robert Gates Thursday approved new rules that will make it harder to discharge gays from the military, calling the changes a matter of "common sense and common decency." Gates announced new guidelines for how the Pentagon carries out the 1993 law banning gays from serving openly in the military – rules which essentially put higher-ranking officers in charge of discharge proceedings and impose tougher requirements for evidence used against gays.

Kadhafi hosts first Arab summit in bid to 'rescue' Jerusalem
Libya's maverick leader Moamer Kadhafi hosts his first Arab summit this weekend that aims to "rescue" Jerusalem as Israel defies international calls for a settlement freeze in the Holy City. The Saturday-Sunday summit in Sirte is also expected to home in on Sudan where President Omar al-Beshir, although faced with an international arrest warrant for alleged war crimes in Darfur, is seeking re-election. The Israeli-Palestinian peace process has already dominated the runup to the summit amid calls for both the Arab world's pro-Western and radical leaders to set aside feuding and unite against Israel.

Rep. Darrell Issa, the top Republican on the House Oversight committee, told CBS News Wednesday that he will call for a special prosecutor to investigate the White House if it does not address Rep. Joe Sestak's claim that he was offered a federal job in exchange for dropping out of the Pennsylvania Senate primary. "If the public doesn't receive a satisfactory answer, the next step would be to call for a special prosecutor, which is well within the statute," Issa (pictured) told Hotsheet.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and his staff worked furiously with US officials on Wednesday to put together a document outlining Israeli commitments and obligations to launch proximity talks with the Palestinians, after two hours of meetings between Netanyahu and US President Barack Obama failed to resolve disagreements between the two countries. The Israeli effort seemed aimed at garnering goodwill from the Americans after a White House meeting that appeared to do little to dissipate recent tensions between the two allies.
