Peres to EU: Israel has every right to build in Jerusalem
President Shimon Peres told visiting European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton on Thursday that Israel reserved the right to build in Jerusalem, adding that its construction policy in the capital has not changed in 40 years. Peres told Ashton that Israel allowed construction in Jewish areas of the capital, but not in neighborhoods heavily populated by Arabs ? a policy held by all previous government, he said.
Idaho first to sign law aimed at health care plan
Idaho took the lead in a growing, nationwide fight against health care overhaul Wednesday when its governor became the first to sign a measure requiring the state attorney general to sue the federal government if residents are forced to buy health insurance. Similar legislation is pending in 37 other states. Constitutional law experts say the movement is mostly symbolic because federal laws supersede those of the states.
New York State Tax Refunds Put On Hold
For hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers, the check won't be in the mail -- at least not on time. New York State has stopped paying tax refunds and won't start again until next month. The tax refund delay is part of a bigger cash crunch.
Walgreens: no new Medicaid patients as of April 16
Effective April 16, Walgreens drugstores across the state won't take any new Medicaid patients, saying that filling their prescriptions is a money-losing proposition....In a news release, Walgreens said its decision to not take new Medicaid patients stemmed from a "continued reduction in reimbursement" under the state's Medicaid program, which reimburses it at less than the break-even point for 95 percent of brand-name medications dispensed to Medicaid patents.
EU foreign chief Catherine Ashton arrives in Gaza Strip
The EU's new foreign policy chief has arrived in Gaza on one of the highest level visits there by a Western politician since Hamas took power. Baroness Caroline Ashton's trip comes amid a new push by the EU and US to revive stalled Middle East peace talks. ...As Baroness Ashton arrived, militants in Gaza fired a rocket into Israel, killing a man, Israeli officials said.
African Union acts against Madagascar's Andry Rajoelina
The African Union has put sanctions on Madagascar's leader Andry Rajoelina, after he failed to meet a deadline to set up a unity government. Mr Rajoelina and 108 of his backers will face travel restrictions and have any foreign assets frozen, the AU said. The organisation wants to force Mr Rajoelina, a former DJ who seized power a year ago, back into negotiations.
Goldberg: Obama wants Livni in coalition
US President Barack Obama's administration's recent pressure on Israel is designed to force Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to add Kadima to his coalition instead of Israel Beiteinu or Shas, influential American columnist Jeffrey Goldberg wrote in a story published on Tuesday. In a column in The Atlantic magazine titled "What Obama is Actually Trying to Do in Israel," Goldberg, who is close to Obama, said the president wanted to cause a rupture in Netanyahu's coalition that would necessitate bringing in Kadima. He said he spoke about the matter with officials in the White House.
'Arab-Israeli conflict hurts US'
Gen. David Petraeus charged Tuesday that the Arab-Israeli conflict hurts America’s ability to advance its interests in the Middle East, fomenting anti-American sentiment and limiting America's strategic partnerships with Arab governments. Petraeus called the conflict one of the "root causes of instability" and "obstacles to security" in the region – which aids al-Qaida – and argued that serious progress in the peace process could weaken Iran's reach, as it uses the conflict to fuel support for its terror group proxies.
