So it came to pass, when Laban saw the nose ring, and the bracelets on his sister's wrists, and when he heard the words of his sister Rebekah, saying, "Thus the man spoke to me," that he went to the man. And there he stood by the camels at the well. And he said, "Come in, O blessed of the LORD! Why do you stand outside? For I have prepared the house, and a place for the camels."
Genesis 6:25-30
Do you know someone who loves to take the credit for everything? Someone who is quick to say, "I did this," or "I did that," even when they didn't? Meet Laban. Laban was a man prone to pride, a con man who loved material things. When he heard that his sister, Rebekah, had been talking with a man of great wealth, and that the man had given her expensive jewelry, he rushed to meet him. He wanted to be the man's buddy. "Come in!" he told the man when he met him. "I have prepared the house, and a place for the camels!" The only problem? He was lying.
Laban hadn't prepared the house, and he hadn't prepared a place for the camels -- his sister and his mother had! But Laban saw 10 camels full of jewelry and wealth, and decided to make himself look good in front of their caretaker. "Look what I have done for you!" he said. In his pride, he took credit for what he hadn't done.
And the truth is that we're all guilty of this. So often, we take the honor and the glory for what God has done. But without God, who are we? Without God, we can't even breathe. We can't even walk without God. We must never convince ourselves that we are anything apart from God.
Proverbs 3:6 says, "In all your ways, acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths." In everything we do, we must learn to give credit where credit is due -- we must give all honor and glory to the Lord! You see, the Lord desires that we walk humbly with Him. Proverbs 3:7 says, "Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the LORD and depart from evil."
Today, don't be someone who robs God of His glory. Honor him in everything you do, and He will be faithful to direct your paths.
