Netanyahu, opposition leader strike deal that will draw Kadima into the coalition in move that will postpone early elections; Kadima, Likud factions approve agreement despite some opposition.
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and opposition leader Shaul Mofaz met Monday in order to form a national unity government that would postpone early elections at the last minute.
The Likud and Kadima factions began emergency meetings after 2:00 a.m. to discuss developments, with Likud and Kadima eventually approving the deal.
A top White House official said Sunday that the political transformation in the Middle East enhances America’s interests and helps advance its Iran policy.
“We believe the policy that we are pursuing [on Iran] is working,” said Deputy National Security Adviser Denis McDonough, speaking at a Washington Institute for Near East Policy conference.
“While the change in the Middle East is working against Iran, it can work for the United States,” he said. “A more democratic region will ultimately be more stable for us and our friends.”
