Each figure of faith in Hebrews 11 shows us a certain angle of faith, and as we come to the example of Moses there's an undeniable lesson to be learned:

When he became of age, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin, esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt; for he looked to the reward. By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; for he endured as seeing Him who is invisible. By faith he kept the Passover and the sprinkling of blood, lest he who destroyed the firstborn should touch them. (Hebrews 11:24-28 NKJV)

Notice how faith expressed itself in Moses' life. He had the opportunity to live in the lap of luxury. Because Pharaoh's daughter took him in when he was just an infant, he was among the inner circle of the most powerful kingdom on earth at the time.

But he didn't take it. Instead, he chose a much more difficult route. Moses chose to identify with his own people, the despised and enslaved Hebrews, instead of cashing in on his status. He embraced the person God had made and called him to be, and in the process he closed himself off to an incalculable amount of earthly pleasures.

Why? Because they were earthly pleasures. Faith looks beyond this world, and because it does, it's able to endure the hardships and consequences lived out in this world. Moses understood that it was better to suffer in the temporal short-term in order to be on the right side of the equation in the eternal long-term.

Was it easy? No, but it was possible by virtue of faith's ability to see past the passing pleasures of this life.

Think About It…

What does this passage reveal to me about God?

What does this passage reveal to me about myself?

Based on this, what changes do I need to make?

What is my prayer for today?
