"Lakeside"
(Chapter 10:4)
The grassy knoll was just enough of a rise to provide a perch to view the
lake.
It was her favorite. Often she would lay back and look at the sky and
pretend there was a sun up there. So far just clouds, still she could
imagine one day there would be a sunrise. Oddly she hadn't really noticed
missing the sun. She had been a big city girl anyways and didn't really get
out in the sun. Still you would think she would have missed it in sixty-nine
years, but her mind had been elsewhere. Now she wondered laying there alone what would it be like when the sun came
back.
It was not much of a lake thought Delilah but Eben loved to call it that.
The ripples playing on the surface in the distance always danced for her as
an invisible ballet across the waters sections. First in one area, then
another, she didn't care or know what made the waters move, she merely
enjoyed it as one of her favorite pastimes. Wandering, dancing, twirling it was childish of course, but the mind that
liked to wander could imagine a time in childhood when holding a loved one's
hands they would waltz and twirl the day away. She could see herself that free, almost.
A sudden plop startled her.
She realized it was a cast stone. The tossed object barely catching her
attention as it flew over her. She seeing it out of the corner of her eye.
It had sailed over her from behind which caused her to jump with startled
emotions. She didn't like surprises.
Being lost in her daydream she was unprepared for the sudden noise. The plop
had sounded hollow. It echoed like dropping into deep water. Who? What?
She heard laughter. Ezravivor, the older of the two brothers was laughing as
he came up upon her sitting alone. He had walked up from behind her suspecting where she would be when he saw
her leave the group earlier. He knew the others didn't notice her leaving.
Yet she often did. She would "fade away" from the people often retreating to
this place to be alone. Each time she left he followed.
It wasn't always right after she left; after all, he did have some
self-respect. He didn't want to appear as though he were following. Yet,
cause and effect, he was following her.
No one ever noticed when she left, but everyone always saw him leave.
They knew where he was going. No one ever said a word to either of them but
everyone knew. They would notice him leaving then realize Delilah was
already gone. It take a genius to figure out where, but it would take a real naiveté not
to figure out after thirty years SOMETHING was going on.
Delilah and Ezravivor were an item.
