LastCall: "Prince of God " (Genesis 33:1-20) -Bob Caldwell

Prince of God   "Then he crossed over before them and bowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother." -Genesis 33:3 Jacob now sees what he never could have imagined – something that was much greater than the gifts he had sent could have done (32:13-20). Jacob experienced a reunion with his brother as if they were the closest of friends. Esau embraced, kissed, and wept with deep emotion at the sight of his brother Jacob – a brother Esau had vowed to kill (27:41). What could have brought this about other than the gracious divine intervention of God? God had moved upon Esau's heart in a way Jacob never could have. Jacob discovered in this moment that he had, in fact, become Israel, a "prince with God." Notice how God has now taken center stage in Jacob's thinking. Jacob declares in verse five that his children are "the children whom God has graciously given." In verse 10, Jacob tells Esau that he had "seen the face of God" in the way Esau had so graciously received him. In verse 11, Jacob points to God's grace (undeserved blessing) as the source of all the wealth Jacob had brought back from Haren. Then in verse 20, we are told that as soon as Jacob settles safely in the land promised to him by God he builds an altar and names it "El Ellohe Israel," meaning "Mighty God of Israel." Jacob is truly becoming Israel, a prince with God. Who or what defines us? Are we the result of being children, princes of God first and foremost, or the result of something much less? We too must come to the place where we learn above all else to prevail with God so that we may reign in life as a prince of God.
Genesis 33:1-20  Jacob and Esau Meet 1 Now Jacob lifted his eyes and looked, and there, Esau was coming, and with him were four hundred men. So he divided the children among Leah, Rachel, and the two maidservants. 2 And he put the maidservants and their children in front, Leah and her children behind, and Rachel and Joseph last. 3 Then he crossed over before them and bowed himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother. 4 But Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept. 5 And he lifted his eyes and saw the women and children, and said, "Who are these with you?" So he said, "The children whom God has graciously given your servant." 6 Then the maidservants came near, they and their children, and bowed down. 7 And Leah also came near with her children, and they bowed down. Afterward Joseph and Rachel came near, and they bowed down. 8 Then Esau said, "What do you mean by all this company which I met?" And he said, "These are to find favor in the sight of my lord." 9 But Esau said, "I have enough, my brother; keep what you have for yourself." 10 And Jacob said, "No, please, if I have now found favor in your sight, then receive my present from my hand, inasmuch as I have seen your face as though I had seen the face of God, and you were pleased with me. 11 Please, take my blessing that is brought to you, because God has dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough." So he urged him, and he took it. 12 Then Esau said, "Let us take our journey; let us go, and I will go before you." 13 But Jacob said to him, "My lord knows that the children are weak, and the flocks and herds which are nursing are with me. And if the men should drive them hard one day, all the flock will die. 14 Please let my lord go on ahead before his servant. I will lead on slowly at a pace which the livestock that go before me, and the children, are able to endure, until I come to my lord in Seir."
Jacob's Reconciliation With Esau (Verses 1-17) v. 3 Bowed – He bowed seven times as a sign of respect for Esau who was now a ruler over the region of Edom. v. 4 Embraced Him – Jacob's encounter with God in prayer at Peniel (32:24-31) had no doubt been the cause of Esau's change of heart. v. 5 God Has Graciously Given – Jacob acknowledges the hand of God in the increase and blessing his large family represented. Face of God – Jacob did not mean this literally, but rather this was a way to convey that he saw God as the cause of Esau's desire for reconciliation. v. 13 Children are Weak – This company of women, children, and livestock had traveled hundreds of miles. They were weakened by the journey and were unable to keep up with Esau. v. 14 Seir – Jacob intended to settle his family in Canaan and then go to see his brother in Seir, a city in Edom.
15 And Esau said, "Now let me leave with you some of the people who are with me." But he said, "What need is there? Let me find favor in the sight of my lord." 16 So Esau returned that day on his way to Seir. 17 And Jacob journeyed to Succoth, built himself a house, and made booths for his livestock. Therefore the name of the place is called Succoth. Jacob Comes to Canaan 18 Then Jacob came safely to the city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, when he came from Padan Aram; and he pitched his tent before the city. 19 And he bought the parcel of land, where he had pitched his tent, from the children of Hamor, Shechem's father, for one hundred pieces of money. 20 Then he erected an altar there and called it El Elohe Israel.
v. 15 What Need is There – Jacob saw no need for the bodyguards offered by Esau, since God and His angelic host had protected them to this point. Jacob Settles In The Land (Verses 17-20) v. 17 Succoth – This term means shelters or booths. It was located in the Jordan Valley on the eastern side of the Jordan River. Booths For His Livestock – This likely refers to folds (fences) made of twigs woven together. v. 18 Shechem – The place means "safe or peaceful." What Jacob had asked at Bethel (to return to his homeland in peace) had now occurred (Gen. 28:21). v. 20 El Elohe Israel – This means Mighty God of Israel. Jacob worships God as one who in His own power and might has brought to pass the changing of his life from Jacob to Israel, from one who was a deceiver (Jacob) to one who is a "prince with God" (Israel). He also saw the power of God in overruling all the obstacles that laid in the way of being restored to his homeland.
