When He had gone a little farther from there, He saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the boat mending their nets. And immediately He called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and went after Him.
Mark 1:19-20
So it was, as the multitude pressed about Him to hear the word of God, that He stood by the Lake of Gennesaret, and saw two boats standing by the lake; but the fishermen had gone from them and were washing their nets.
Luke 5:1-2
God has called us to be "fishers of men" (Matthew 4:19). But have you ever really thought about a fisherman's job? In looking at these two accounts from Mark and Luke, we see the cycle of a fisherman's occupation. First, they cast their nets, then they wash their nets, and finally they mend their nets -- and the cycle starts all over again. I can't help but see here, in a spiritual sense, our responsibility as fishers of people.First, we are to cast our nets. This is evangelism. It's difficult to catch fish if our nets are in our boat! Let the Word of God and the message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ be cast out of your lives and onto others.
For whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? (Romans 10:13-14a).
Second, we are to wash our nets. Ephesians 5:26 says that husbands are to love their wives and sanctify them by the washing of the Word of God. We all need to be engaged in discipleship -- and that starts with being in the Scriptures. Living in the world oftentimes leads to living like the world, so we need to be sensitive to this, and confess and repent our sins to the Lord. Let the Word of God dwell in your hearts and wash you, cleanse you, and fill you with His perfect and holy thoughts.
Third, we are to mend our nets. When we're talking to others about the Lord Jesus and we're teaching others about the Word of God, sometimes our nets get snagged and we need mending. It's difficult to "catch fish" if your net is broken. Are you broken today? Do you feel torn, ripped, or snagged? Go to the Lord in prayer. Ask the Holy Spirit for a fresh anointing. You need to mend and strengthen your soul so that you can continue the works that He has for you.You see, just as a fisherman is diligent to the cycle of his profession, so do we need to be diligent to the cycle of our responsibility as fishers of people. It's a great responsibility, and the greatest privilege, because just as the nets served a purpose for the fishermen, so do our lives serve a purpose in God's perfect plan!
