Dark Backdrop of Sin
 "And it happened, when Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father's concubine; and Israel heard about it." -Genesis 35:22
The statement in 35:22 stands out as another example of the spiritual confusion of fallen humanity. We saw this graphically in Genesis 34. Here we see again the lack of spiritual reality in the life of these sons of Jacob. Sons who would one day establish the 12 tribes of Israel. Also we read in 35:16-18 of the death of Jacob's wife as she gave birth to Benjamin. This shows us another aspect of the struggle we face in a fallen world. Jacob deeply loved Rachel and the loss of her life added to the disappointment and pain he felt from the sinful lives of three of his sons (34:1-30, 35:22).
The listing of Esau's family line in chapter 36 adds another aspect of life in a fallen world. The vanity of life. People are born, seek power, and die. This dark backdrop will prepare us for an extensive recounting of the life of one of Jacob's sons – Joseph. A son who reveals a heart for God and a level of integrity before God and man that stood out in great contrast to the world he lived in that was darkened by sin.
When we are faced with corruption and failure in this human world or in our own lives, it is important to realize a that life like Joseph's is still possible. God has not utterly left us without hope. People like Joseph can rise from the ashes of human failure all around him. Never lose hope!
Genesis 35:16-36:43
 Death of Rachel
16 Then they journeyed from Bethel. And when there was but a little distance to go to Ephrath, Rachel labored in childbirth, and she had hard labor. 17 Now it came to pass, when she was in hard labor, that the midwife said to her, "Do not fear; you will have this son also." 18 And so it was, as her soul was departing (for she died), that she called his name Ben-Oni; but his father called him Benjamin. 19 So Rachel died and was buried on the way to Ephrath (that is, Bethlehem). 20 And Jacob set a pillar on her grave, which is the pillar of Rachel's grave to this day.
21 Then Israel journeyed and pitched his tent beyond the tower of Eder. 22 And it happened, when Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father's concubine; and Israel heard about it.
Jacob's Twelve Sons
Now the sons of Jacob were twelve: 23 the sons of Leah were Reuben, Jacob's firstborn, and Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun; 24 the sons of Rachel were Joseph and Benjamin; 25 the sons of Bilhah, Rachel's maidservant, were Dan and Naphtali; 26 and the sons of Zilpah, Leah's maidservant, were Gad and Asher. These were the sons of Jacob who were born to him in Padan Aram.
Death of Isaac
27 Then Jacob came to his father Isaac at Mamre, or Kirjath Arba (that is, Hebron), where Abraham and Isaac had dwelt. 28 Now the days of Isaac were one hundred and eighty years. 29 So Isaac breathed his last and died, and was gathered to his people, being old and full of days. And his sons Esau and Jacob buried him.
Rachel's Death (Verses 16-20)
v. 16 Labored in Childbirth – This was Rachel's second son.
v. 18 Ben-Oni – Hebrew, means "son of sorrow."
Benjamin – This means "son of my right hand." This word in ancient times meant literally "son of the south." To us, east is mentally on our right, but to those who took their bearings by facing east, the right referred to the south.
v. 20 Set a Pillar – This was a memorial in honor of Rachel.
Reuben's Sexual Sin (Verses 21-22)
v. 21 Tower of Eder – This was a watch tower built for the protection of flocks against thieves (2 Kings 18:8; 2 Chron. 26:10 ), on the other side of Bethlehem.
v. 22 Reuben – He was the oldest of the 12 sons of Jacob; his mother was Leah.
Lay With – This sexual sin seems to have been done with agreement by Bilhah, since she was older and would have had the authority to stop it.
Bilhah – Bilhah was the mother of Dan and Naphtali, and the servant of Rachel. Rachel had requested of this servant to be her substitute in bearing these children for her husband because until the birth of Joseph she had been barren (Gen. 30:3-24).
Jacob Heard – This indicates that Jacob took action to stop this sin in the family and also provides the backdrop for Jacob's rebuke of Reuben in Genesis 49:3-4.
Jacob's Sons – Isaac's Death (Verses 23-29)
v. 26 The Sons of Jacob – The 12 sons are listed to provide the link to the next section that records the development of the family of Esau.
v. 27 Came to His Father – This must have included the 12 sons who would have stood before their grandfather Isaac to honor him as he approached death.
v. 29 Gathered to His People – This is an Old Testament phrase used to refer to life after death.
Genesis 36
 The Family of Esau
1 Now this is the genealogy of Esau, who is Edom. 2 Esau took his wives from the daughters of Canaan: Adah the daughter of Elon the Hittite; Aholibamah the daughter of Anah, the daughter of Zibeon the Hivite; 3 and Basemath, Ishmael's daughter, sister of Nebajoth. 4 Now Adah bore Eliphaz to Esau, and Basemath bore Reuel. 5 And Aholibamah bore Jeush, Jaalam, and Korah. These were the sons of Esau who were born to him in the land of Canaan.
6 Then Esau took his wives, his sons, his daughters, and all the persons of his household, his cattle and all his animals, and all his goods which he had gained in the land of Canaan, and went to a country away from the presence of his brother Jacob. 7 For their possessions were too great for them to dwell together, and the land where they were strangers could not support them because of their livestock. 8 So Esau dwelt in Mount Seir. Esau is Edom.
9 And this is the genealogy of Esau the father of the Edomites in Mount Seir. 10 These were the names of Esau's sons: Eliphaz the son of Adah the wife of Esau, and Reuel the son of Basemath the wife of Esau. 11 And the sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho, Gatam, and Kenaz.
12 Now Timna was the concubine of Eliphaz, Esau's son, and she bore Amalek to Eliphaz. These were the sons of Adah, Esau's wife.
13 These were the sons of Reuel: Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah. These were the sons of Basemath, Esau's wife.
14 These were the sons of Aholibamah, Esau's wife, the daughter of Anah, the daughter of Zibeon. And she bore to Esau: Jeush, Jaalam, and Korah.
Chapter 36
Esau's Family Line (Verses 1-19)
v. 1 Edom – God had revealed to Rebekah that both Jacob and Esau would produce nations and Edom did become a nation that had several dealings with Israel (Num. 20:14; Deut. 23:7; Ob.10-12).
v. 2 Took His Wives – The names of these wives differ from the account in Genesis 26:34, most likely due to the changing of names that often occurred at marriage as well as the use of multiple names used by people.
v. 4 Eliphaz – This points to Edom as a possible setting of the book of Job where Eliphaz the Temanite (v. 11) is referred to.
v. 6 From the Presence...of Jacob – This was done before Jacob had actually returned to Canaan. It refers to the right Jacob had been given to the wealth and land that came with birthright and patriarchal blessing.
v. 8 Mount Seir – This was a rugged hill and mountainous region that came to be known as Edom.
v. 12 Amalek – He eventually became a nation that was a bitter enemy of Israel. They were the first nation to oppose the return of the Israelites into the Promised Land after their Egyptian slavery (Num. 24:20; Ex. 17:8).
The Chiefs of Edom
15 These were the chiefs of the sons of Esau. The sons of Eliphaz, the firstborn son of Esau, were Chief Teman, Chief Omar, Chief Zepho, Chief Kenaz, 16 Chief Korah, Chief Gatam, and Chief Amalek. These were the chiefs of Eliphaz in the land of Edom. They were the sons of Adah.
17 These were the sons of Reuel, Esau's son: Chief Nahath, Chief Zerah, Chief Shammah, and Chief Mizzah. These were the chiefs of Reuel in the land of Edom. These were the sons of Basemath, Esau's wife.
18 And these were the sons of Aholibamah, Esau's wife: Chief Jeush, Chief Jaalam, and Chief Korah. These were the chiefs who descended from Aholibamah, Esau's wife, the daughter of Anah. 19 These were the sons of Esau, who is Edom, and these were their chiefs.
The Sons of Seir
20 These were the sons of Seir the Horite who inhabited the land: Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, 21 Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan. These were the chiefs of the Horites, the sons of Seir, in the land of Edom.
22 And the sons of Lotan were Hori and Hemam. Lotan's sister was Timna.
23 These were the sons of Shobal: Alvan, Manahath, Ebal, Shepho, and Onam.
24 These were the sons of Zibeon: both Ajah and Anah. This was the Anah who found the water in the wilderness as he pastured the donkeys of his father Zibeon. 25 These were the children of Anah: Dishon and Aholibamah the daughter of Anah.
26 These were the sons of Dishon: Hemdan, Eshban, Ithran, and Cheran. 27 These were the sons of Ezer: Bilhan, Zaavan, and Akan. 28 These were the sons of Dishan: Uz and Aran.
29 These were the chiefs of the Horites: Chief Lotan, Chief Shobal, Chief Zibeon, Chief Anah, 30 Chief Dishon, Chief Ezer, and Chief Dishan. These were the chiefs of the Horites, according to their chiefs in the land of Seir.
v. 15 Chiefs – "Alluph" (Heb.) Means "ruler of a thousand" or clan.
Chiefs Of The Horites (Verses 20-30)
v. 20 Seir the Horite – According to Deuteronomy 2:12, 22 the Horite people who were not killed by Esau were brought under the rule of Esau. Horite means "dweller in caves." Seir was one of the Horite rulers who maintained his rule under Esau. Mount Seir is no doubt named after him.
v. 21 Chiefs of the Horites – The seven listed ruled each of their own clans.
v. 22 Sons Of... – The listing here is basically the same as in I Chronciles 1:38-42.
The Kings of Edom
31 Now these were the kings who reigned in the land of Edom before any king reigned over the children of Israel: 32 Bela the son of Beor reigned in Edom, and the name of his city was Dinhabah. 33 And when Bela died, Jobab the son of Zerah of Bozrah reigned in his place. 34 When Jobab died, Husham of the land of the Temanites reigned in his place. 35 And when Husham died, Hadad the son of Bedad, who attacked Midian in the field of Moab, reigned in his place. And the name of his city was Avith. 36 When Hadad died, Samlah of Masrekah reigned in his place. 37 And when Samlah died, Saul of Rehoboth-by-the-River reigned in his place. 38 When Saul died, Baal-Hanan the son of Achbor reigned in his place. 39 And when Baal-Hanan the son of Achbor died, Hadar reigned in his place; and the name of his city was Pau. His wife's name was Mehetabel, the daughter of Matred, the daughter of Mezahab.
The Chiefs of Esau
40 And these were the names of the chiefs of Esau, according to their families and their places, by their names: Chief Timnah, Chief Alvah, Chief Jetheth, 41 Chief Aholibamah, Chief Elah, Chief Pinon, 42 Chief Kenaz, Chief Teman, Chief Mibzar, 43 Chief Magdiel, and Chief Iram. These were the chiefs of Edom, according to their dwelling places in the land of their possession. Esau was the father of the Edomites.
Kings Of Edom (Verses 31-39)
v. 31 These Were the Kings – Keep in mind that of each of these eight kings mentioned, none is succeeded by a son, which was normally common.
Before Any King of Israel – It's important to note the promises given to Israel were much slower in developing than the initial success of Esau.
Chiefs Of Esau (Verses 40-43)
v. 40 Their Places – This list gives the territorial leaders and the geographical area under their control.
