Faith is not just believing; it is doing. Imagine a tightrope, high above a circus ring. You've seen many people walk across it successfully, and you believe that if it can hold their weight, it can hold yours. But then comes your moment to walk across. Suddenly, it doesn't matter what you think or believe about the tightrope; unless you take a step, you prove that you don't actually trust it.
Walking with God is like walking a tightrope. He demands that we have faith -- that we not only believe in Him, but that we actually trust Him. And just as it's impossible to trust a tightrope without taking a step, so it's impossible to trust God without taking action. Faith without works is not faith at all -- it is suspicion. If we trust God, we will live a life of faith -- and we will take action.
Hebrews 11:1 says that "faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." See, faith consists of two parts: hope and evidence. By placing our faith in something, we have hope that it will succeed; we believe it is capable of accomplishing its purpose. But faith is more than just hoping; it is proving. It is walking out onto the tightrope and proving we trust it. It is providing the visual evidence of our hope, unseen. Faith is not just believing, and it is not just hoping; it is doing.
"With God, nothing will be impossible" (Luke 1:37). Do you trust that statement? Don't bother answering with words, because your life will answer for you. If your hope is truly in the Lord, there will inevitably be evidence. Sometimes the Lord calls us to take huge steps of faith -- steps that even seem impossible to us. Maybe it's a step toward reconciling a broken relationship, or a step toward getting out of debt. Maybe it's dealing with a painful past, or changing courses for a better future. Let us have faith that nothing is impossible with God! Let us be willing to put our beliefs to the test, and take a step into uncharted territory. "Without faith it is impossible to please God" (Hebrews 11:6a), because if we don't take action at His Word, we really don't believe His Word. If we never step out on the tightrope, we don't just have an inactive faith -- we have no faith.
You see, to a lost and hopeless world, we are the evidence of God's love. We are the proof that His Word is "living and powerful" (Hebrews 4:12), and that His love is life-changing. But if our lives show no evidence of the hope we have in Jesus Christ, why would anybody want to place their hope in Him, too? If we don't live by faith, what purposes do our beliefs serve? "Even the demons believe [in God] -- and tremble!" (James 2:19).
May I encourage you today to not only believe God, but to trust Him. If He's leading you to do something, or to go somewhere, don't hesitate. Go for it! Step out in faith and take action. No matter how unachievable, intimidating, or crazy it may seem, remember that with Him, nothing will be impossible.
