Do you have a “core values list” with integrity prominently featured? (109-4)

“Take heed to yourselves, lest your example contradict your doctrine, and lest you lay such stumbling-blocks before the blind, as may be the occasion of their ruin; lest you unsay with your lives what you say with your tongues; and be the greatest hinderers of the success of your own labors…He that means as he speaks, will surely do as he speaks.”

These words written by Richard Baxter in The Reformed Pastor in an article entitled “The Banner of Truth Trust” should be on the wall of every leader. The Biblical virtue of integrity points to a consistency between what is inside and what is outside, between belief and behavior, our words and our ways, our attitudes and our actions, our values and our practice. Read 1 Chronicles 29:16-20.

David was nearing the end of his reign and his life. He had a desire to build a temple to house the Ark of the Covenant but God had said no to his request to start construction. Even when David knew he would not be the one to build the temple, he did not give up on the dream but began to gather materials needed for the temple’s construction so his successor would be able to start construction unimpeded by lack of resources.

David used his influence to gather huge amounts of resources from the nation’s wealth but more than that, as a man of integrity, when he spoke of the need for others to freely give, he led by example. “Besides, in my devotion to the temple of my God I now give my personal treasures of gold and silver for the temple of my God, over and above everything I have provided (from the nation) for this holy temple…” 1 Chronicles 29:3.
David held integrity as a core value. The reason integrity made his “core value list” is because David believed it was on God’s list of required core values for leaders. “I know, my God, that you test the heart and are pleased with integrity” (v. 17a).

Your assignment – look up the definition of integrity. Based on the definition, list five things in your daily leadership-life that require integrity from yourself or your team. Once identified, evaluate your performance in each of these areas on a scale of 1-10 with 1 being poor performance and 10 being stellar. Anything below an 8 needs work.

Determine what you will do to improve the rating.

Do you have a “core values list” that has integrity prominently featured? Read the quote from Richard Baxter again and think about the implications for your own life as a leader with integrity.
