All stood staring frozen in awe. Amazed in fear, it was a wonder and for some, fright. They had never seen anything like this before or ever imagined it.
“Plantkin”
Whispered Donald off to the right and alone, but no one heard him.
"Help me up Tom"
Tom did not move yet Eben rose.
Struggling to one knee there was a tremble to his rising.
An inner struggle seemed apparent, but no feeling of anger was evident nor was there pain. The look on Ebens face though was older, much older than his normal youthful appearance. He seemed an ancient of days. Old, far far older than anyone had ever seen him look.
He walked past without a glance as Tom stared forward at The Rose.
No one had moved except Eben. Eben had waded out of the depths of the blooms that had fallen and the blossoms were deep. He had walked passed Tom as well as Caleb who like the others was transfixed by… what…by who…by it….., that stood before them.
Back up the path to his house on the sides of the north Eben left them. Up to where stood the gently swaying Weeping Willow. The arms there seemed alive to his arrival. He passed the Quaking Aspens quivering as though greeting him in this time.
They shimmered their leaves as if in delight to see him.
He seemed frail and vulnerable as he walked on, or at the least the most sensitive they had ever sensed anyone could be. He seemed to have begun to shed tears silently.
No heard a sound, but those who had seen his face had no doubt as to the fact of his emote that was slipping gently from his eyes. Not a word was spoken. The Class was silent, as were the trees.
No one followed him.
It was obvious he wanted to be alone and no one had to ask. None did, besides, no one was watching him now.
All eyes were upon The Rose.
"Tom."
