"Appearance of Reality"
(Chp 5:3)
For Tom, the very wish for death isolated his thoughts.
It focused him back from the brink of insanity. Sanity was the ability to process thought and reason it into some order or familiarity. Doing so, created an appearance of reality. According to sciences, it was that Appearance of Reality we dubbed as “sane”.
Insane would be to perceive ‘other’ realities presuming they were real and not fiction.
Of course, if those ‘other realities’ were real, then the ‘sane’ would owe a lot of ‘insane’ people an apology.
Not that they would mind.
They were…, after all…, insane.
The problem for Tom was that in some twist of fate, this insane reality, was beginning to make sense.
In this “reality” Tom was not flying solo.
He had a companion.
The other co-flight companion, (figures a Catholic) started talking to Tom as soon as he figured he was coherent. Of course Tom wasn’t sure why it figured except that if he was being carried by an angel, he almost expected his companion to be St Peter and there be “pearly gates” on the itinerary.
Tom hadn’t been paying attention. He realized his companion was talking.
All his companion had heard Tom do was blubber. Giggling didn’t count and slobbering was to be expected in his condition. Tom realized the man had been speaking ‘out loud’ at anyone and could not really hear what was being said.
That was fine with Tom till he farted.
(The body does the oddest things when stressed out)
Tom was embarrassed and actually mumbled an apology. This started his companion talking at Tom. Little did he know, thought Tom, I'm insane and dreaming and he doesn't know it.
Passing gas had been comic relief though and Tom giggled hysterically high pitched.
The man hadn’t noticed. He was too busy telling Tom what was happening.
Did seem a little precarious being held by an angel smooched up against another person. Flying high without a parachute and not drug induced. It was insanity all right. No doubt about it.
According to Tom’s companion, after the “Light from the East”, (or was it all around?) began, Tom had fallen down and passed out.
Looking at Tom, the Catholic Friend had said he thought Tom had died since he had looked pale and lifeless.
That was an understatement,
Tom thought.
But the angel had told him,
" Do not Fear. He is Not Dead. He is merely asleep."
A ha!,
thought Tom,
I am asleep. This is a dream. The insane do dream,
he thought glibly.
The insane do dream so is their dreams sane or insane?,
Tom thought and reason invaded his mind. He was processing information now, a good sign.
"The Angel leaned over you then and breathed upon you."
Finished the man.
Too weird and absurd to be true, thought Tom and concluded dreams don't have to make sense.
So the insane dream insane dreams.
Tom chuckled at the rhetoric of that statement and emotion invaded Toms mind.
Slowly Tom was crawling back to reality. He didn’t know it in his mind while all the time reasoning that what He saw and experienced confirmed he was going insane.
Maybe he was crazy but he was beginning to think it all was too funny.
Since I am flying, does this make me one who flew over the cuckoo's nest?,
Tom laughedat his own joke and without knowing it Tom had backed away from the cliff of sanity and stood now on solid ground mentally.
Of course his new found companion had an explanation of all that had occurred.
Tom listened, assuming this was part of the “Dreamscape of the Insane.”
He thought maybe it was necessary to go through all this to "wake up" or die. So thinking it was part of some master plan he listened as his partner who seemed intent on "witnessing" to him and telling him "his version" of what was happening to them all.
There is a hell and I am in my own private version of it,
Tom mused as the "companion" had to be a nutcase.
He is fruitier than I am, Tom considered.
Tom had listened at first politely then with growing ire as he realized this fruitcake he had been boxed in with was nuttier than he was.
I am being punished, he thought, for all those people he had turned away at the airport with their flowers and juju beads and not giving to the Christmas Fund to Feed the Children at work.
He still considered his reality as an impartial distant non-participant that was simply observing.
He was unwilling to accept any of this and sooner or later all would vanish in the twinkling of an eye.…,
Where had he heard that before?
Sooner or later he had to wake up.
Or else this was Hell and he deserved what he got.
