Last Call Digest: Are you connecting? (100-1) -Barry Werner

Are you connecting with your team members? (100-1)

Every great leader has the ability to relate to their team and people in their sphere of influence. If you want to be a superior leader, you must learn to connect with people. Relational leadership dramatically raises your influence as a leader.

Team loyalty requires that you relate with your team through empathy, understanding, truth, fairness, respect, and mutual accountability. If a leader will give of themselves in these areas to their team, their team will be loyal and will follow their leadership anywhere. Ignore the need for connection and your leadership influence will be limited or a disaster.

King Rehoboam had an opportunity to make some reasonable concessions to the people of the nation of Israel in the early days of his leadership that would indicate he understood their situation, empathized with their circumstances and would be fair in his leadership. Even when the previous king’s closest advisers counseled Rehoboam that he could win the people’s hearts forever by lightening their workload and tax burden, he turned a deaf ear to the people’s need.

When Rehoboam showed no concern for their welfare, the people determined they had no connection with this king. When Rehobaom demonstrated that he had no desire to have a relationship with those who served him they sought another leader who would listen. Wise leaders understand that even though it seems like a paradox, a leader gets more by giving more.

When a leader gives more of their time, talent and possessions, they receive loyalty and much more in return. As you demonstrate that you are understanding of the team’s needs and open to dealing with those needs they will be open to your vision and demonstrate loyalty to your leadership.

Dr. Albert Schweitzer, one of history’s great leaders asserted, “Whatever you have received more than others – in health, in talents, in ability, in success … all this you must not take to yourself as a matter of course. In gratitude for good fortune, you must render some sacrifice of your own life for another life.”

Whether you have just taken over a leadership position or are well established, you must connect with your team if you are to succeed. The sign of a great leader is not what they accomplish on their own but what is accomplished through their team.

Do you know and understand the challenges your team faces in carrying out their assignments each day?

List two actions you can make part of your daily routine that will allow you to gather information about your team’s needs. Pray and ask God to show you how you might need to change your core value concerning meeting the needs of your team.

Great leaders have the ability to connect with their team.
