God’s Way

submitting to one another in the fear of God.
Ephesians 5:21

Paul was making a big statement in this little verse. I think the biggest problem people have today is their unwillingness to submit. Everyone wants to be the boss, so no one is willing to submit under another person’s leadership. There is no submission.

That word submission is a very interesting word, hypotassō, which is a Greek military term meaning “to arrange troops in a military fashion under the command of a leader.” When used as a non-military term, it means, “a voluntary attitude of giving in, cooperating, assuming responsibility and carrying a burden.”

Think about these definitions for a moment. Whether you are in the military or you work for a company, you are under the authority of someone. If you are a child of God, you are under the authority of God, the Holy Spirit.

The word submit is used all the way through Chapters 5 and 6 of Ephesians, because this is a big problem with husbands and wives. They do not know how to submit to the Lord or to one another. Everybody wants their way, but it has to be God’s way.

Paul was making an important proclamation to the Ephesians and to us. If we are truly Spirit-filled, we are going to submit one to another in the fear of God. In the Greek, Paul was telling them to submit in reverence to God.

Terms with God must always be His terms, not yours.
