Being the first to repent and apologize ~ David McGee

1 Chronicles 14:3-7
"Then David took more wives in Jerusalem, and David begot more sons and daughters. And these are the names of his children whom he had in Jerusalem: Shammua, Shobab, Nathan, Solomon, Ibhar, Elishua, Elpelet, Nogah, Nepheg, Japhia, Elishama, Beeliada, and Eliphelet."
NKJV

Life Lesson

Live out your faith at home.
---------------------
David, while an incredible man of God, was not the father he should have been. In several places in scripture, we see where he did not discipline his kids the way he should have. Additionally, the fact that he took many wives, in violation of God's command (Deuteronomy 17:14-17), shows that what he lived out in public he may have skimped on in his own home. God blessed David in spite of multiple marriages, but he had many problems because of it.
This is not only true for David, but probably true in so many ways for each and every one of us. It's quite easy to cover up for deficiencies at work or with friends, but deficiencies are often very evident in family life. Don't believe me? Ask your spouse.
Being a spiritual leader in your home means more than issuing orders and doling out discipline. It also means being the first to repent and apologize when you get things wrong or lose your temper. That's not easy to do. Your family is learning from you. To little eyes, the things you do or don't do speak just as loudly as the things you say. Show your family a life submitted and poured out to God and they will follow in the path you blaze.
Dear Jesus,
Thank You for loving me. I am so grateful that You care to help me when I call on You in the midst's of my battles. Please help me not to pretend that all is O.K. to everyone else. You see my brokenness, my sin and my shame. Lord, I am running to You right now. I have been so beat up lately. Lord, I want to be real and honest. I want to demonstrate true spiritual leadership in my home and in the workplace. Please be strong in my life. Restore my brokenness and help me develop a dependence on You, Lord. Empower me to live my life demonstrating Your love to others. In Jesus' name, Amen.

“Lions Indeed!”

Preparing the Soil (Introduction): For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline. (2 Timothy 1:7)

I have often heard ‘fear’ defined as ‘false evidence appearing real.’ Most of the time, the things that we fear and worry about most are nonexistent. God is looking for willing and bold Christ followers to carry on His mandate here on earth.  The Lord is gracious, meets all our needs, and equips us to serve through the Holy Spirit.

Planting and Watering the Seed (Growth): The wicked man flees though no one pursues, but the righteous are as bold as a lion. (Proverbs 28:1)

Our faith in the Lord Jesus is the basis of our confidence as believers. When our faith is well rooted in God’s Word, we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us (Philippians 4:13). God called us out of darkness into His marvelous light to fulfill His purposes here on earth (1 Peter 2:9). Faith in our hearts and empowerment by the Holy Spirit open us up to God’s plans. Being in the place where God wants us to be and speaking God’s Word in season requires boldness.

In our world today, being a Christ follower and doing God’s will is a big challenge without the help of the Holy Spirit.

The world around us is awaiting the manifestation of the Son of God. The people we come across in our daily walk need the love of Jesus. People are searching for answers, fulfillment, and the meaning of life itself. Our God remains the same, yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). Just like He was with Peter and Paul, He can and will do the same for us today. God can open doors for us to take the Gospel to places we never even imagined. He gives us the boldness to stand before authorities and declare the glory of God in the land.

Harvesting the Crop (Action/Response): Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us? And I said, “Here am I., Send me! (Isaiah 6:8)

The Lord is still calling today.

What will your response be? Saying yes to the Lord means readiness to put on the whole armor of God and be equipped to serve. Yes to the Holy Spirit equips us to teach and gives us the boldness we need. Yes to God is to open our hearts and let Him have His way in our lives at all times.

For the Lord will be your confidence and will keep your foot from being snared. (Proverbs 3:26)

Cultivating (Additional Reading):  Acts 4:1-31

As we continue to get closer and closer to Jesus' return ~ Mike MacIntosh

Then they departed from there and passed through Galilee, and He did not want anyone to know it. For He taught His disciples and said to them,

"The Son of Man is being betrayed into the hands of men, and they will kill Him. And after He is killed, He will rise the third day."

But they did not understand this saying, and were afraid to ask Him.
Mark 9:30-32

This passage marks a real shift that is taking place in Jesus' life; He is leaving the northern territory where He has been safe, and is heading towards Jerusalem, where He will face tremendous opposition -- and ultimately the cross. Notice, though, that He doesn't want the crowds around. He knew quite clearly that He needed to write His message on the hearts of His chosen disciples.

The disciples needed to be prepared for what was to come. At times, Jesus limited his public ministry in order to train His disciples in depth, because He knew the importance of equipping them to carry on when He returned to heaven.

Today, God is trying to get your attention, but are there "crowds" in your life that are hindering your ability to listen to Him? Maybe these crowds are people, but maybe they are material possessions, or worries, anxieties, or fears that you're holding on to.

God wants you to take a season out of your life to get away from the crowds and listen to Him.

This, of course, doesn't mean to stop fellowshipping with other believers or to stop attending church. No, this is about all of those crowds in your life that are hindering your relationship with Him. This is about your lack of "giddy-up" to be with His people.

And just as Jesus Himself was being prepared in His last years of ministry, and just as He was investing His time and energy into His disciples, He also wants to prepare you!

Just because your life is busy doesn't necessarily mean that you're doing great things for God. As we continue to get closer and closer to Jesus' return, don't allow the crowds to crowd your relationship with Him.

Be in the Word, listen to Him, and talk with Him. Soak up and learn all you can, and keep moving forward in the Spirit.

Deep spiritual growth isn't instantaneous, regardless of the quality of experience or teaching. Even the disciples needed to lay aside time to be alone with Jesus Christ, so how much more do you and I need to lay aside time to be with Jesus Christ and let Him minister to us? Let His Spirit just start talking to us and then filling us with His presence. Prepare yourself for something amazing!

Leadership: Are you an effective encourager? (87-5) ~ Barry Werner

Are you an effective encourager? (87-5)

Leaders that encourage their team have some characteristics in common.

Read 1 Samuel 20:1-41.
Jonathan was King Saul’s oldest son and a leader in Israel. Jonathan knew David had been anointed the next king and even though Jonathan was the royal prince, he exalted and encouraged David’s leadership. He knew he risked his future throne with his support of David but Jonathan was so confident in what he had seen God do in David’s life that he became a source of strength and encouragement to David
.

Jonathan displayed several characteristics of an effective encouraging leader/friend:
  • Jonathan was available (vv. 1-4)
  • Jonathan was dependable (vv. 5-17)
  • Jonathan was vulnerable (vv. 18-33)
  • Jonathan was responsible (vv. 34-41)
  • Jonathan was loyal (v. 42)
Effective encouraging leaders are available, dependable, vulnerable, responsible and loyal. Encouraging leaders love to see those on their team succeed.

Philippians 2:1-3 ” If you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any fellowship with the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and purpose.

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.”
Hebrews 3:13 “But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.”

Can you find joy in the success of another leader? (88-1)

No prolonged infancies. ~ Greg Laurie

Are you a disciple of Jesus Christ?

That question is the topic of my message tonight in Orange County.

It is my belief that every disciple is a believer, but not every believer is necessarily a disciple.
So what exactly is a disciple of Jesus? We will look at that together this Thursday and also Sunday at Harvest.

Time to grow up

The reason we need to know about discipleship is because Jesus told us to “go into all the world and make disciples . . . ” (Matthew 28:19).

But how can I make one if I am not one myself? It takes one to make one. It’s called “growing up” spiritually.
The Christian life is more than simply praying a prayer and getting “fire insurance.” It’s following Him, not only as your Savior but also as your Lord.

He wants to not only be your friend, but also your God. And some don’t seem to see that.

No prolonged infancies

Paul tells us in Ephesians 4 that God gave us pastors, teachers, and evangelists to help us mature and be equipped for the work of ministry. As one translation puts it:
“No prolonged infancies among us, please. We’ll not tolerate babes in the woods, small children who are an easy mark for impostors. God wants us to grow up to know the whole truth and tell it in love—like Christ in everything” (Ephesians 4:14-15 THE MESSAGE).
I like that term “No prolonged infancies.”

Some believers are “stunted in their growth.” Well, it’s time to grow up!
We will look at that together.

to prepare you for what‟s ahead. ~ Kay Arthur

If you knew an enemy was coming against you, if you knew that your life and your future were in jeopardy, wouldn‟t you want to know?  Wouldn‟t you want someone to tell you?

Oh, of course you would.

This was our complaint in 9-11.

Where was our intelligence? Why didn‟t they tell us? Because what we implied was if we had known we would of done something differently. The purpose of today‟s program is to prepare you for what‟s ahead.

The key to returning to God is to understand that if you return to Him you have to mean business. You have to be willing. And this is our next point in this line of eight precepts that you need to know about returning to God. And this is number five, you must put away the detested things. You must be willing to say no. You cannot take them with you. You have to abhor them even as God abhors them. Listen to Jeremiah chapter 4, ―‗If you will return, O Israel,‘ declares the LORD, ‗Then you should return to Me. [Come to Me.]

And if you will put away your detested things from My presence, and will not waver, and you will swear, ―As the LORD lives,” in truth, in justice and in righteousness; then the nations will bless themselves in Him, And in Him…will [the] glory.‘‖

(Jeremiah 4:1-2) Do you realize what He‟s saying? Do you realize what He‟s saying? He‟s saying to Israel, “If you will return to Me, if you will put away your idols, if you will stop going after the works of your own hands. Then I want you to know, not only will I heal you, but I will heal the nations.” Precious One, this is what God is all about. You get to Jeremiah chapter 17, and He says, ―Heal me, O LORD, and I will be healed; save me, [O God] and I will be saved….‖ (Jeremiah 17:14)

So when God sounds trumpet, He‟s warning you that judgment is on the way.

He‟s warning you that the enemy is coming. And in that warning, He‟s telling us what we are to do. We are to return to Him. We are not to get out our guns and start battling. We‟re to return to Him. If you remember 9-11, what happened was the churches were full right after 9-11. But it didn‟t stick, it didn‟t last. There was no repentance in the United States of America.

There was no turning away from evil, there was no putting away our evil things, as a matter of fact, you look at Madoff, and others, and all the corruption that went on from that time on.

No one really feared God.

And you and I can expect to have defeat if we will not trust the Lord and do what He says. In verse 2 He says, ―‗[If] you will swear, ―As the LORD lives,‖ in truth, in justice and in righteousness….‘‖ (Jeremiah 4:2)

Which is my sixth point; if you want to return to Him, if you want your faithlessness to be healed, you come to Him the way you are. But you come to Him in truth. You acknowledge everything. You come to Him in justice. You‟re going to act fair. And you come to Him in righteousness. You‟re going to be righteous. Not that you can make yourself righteous, but you appropriate the righteousness that God has given you in Christ Jesus, and you live accordingly.

Never forget this, there is a right, there is a wrong.

And God has to judge the wrong. And so it says, verse 3, ―For thus says the LORD to the men of Judah and to Jerusalem, ‗Break up your fallow ground…do not sow among thorns [break up your fallow ground, do not sow among thorns]….‘‖ (Jeremiah 4:3)

So if you‟re going to return to Him you have to be willing to take that spade, so to speak, and deal with that fallow, fallow ground that is lying there. You need to make sure that you don‟t seed among thorns. Now when He‟s saying that, what is He doing? He‟s taking us to Mark chapter 4. In Mark chapter 4 Jesus is telling the parable, the parable of the seed. And He‟s talking about when the seed is sown, where should it be sown? And He‟s talking about the different kinds of soil. And one of the kinds of soil is that among thorns. And this is what He says in verse 18, and it says, ―‗And…the ones on whom the seed was sown among the thorns; these are the ones…,‘‖ now listen, ―‗…who have heard the word….‘‖ They‟ve heard the trumpet, ―‗…but the worries of the world…the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things…choke out the word, and it becomes unfruitful.‘‖ (Mark 4:18-19)

So if you‟re going to return to Him and He is going to heal your faithlessness, then you have to break up the fallow ground. And you need to sow your seed apart from the worries of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things. Think about what‟s kept us from holiness, and righteousness, and the Word of God. It is the desire for other things. It‟s the deceitfulness of riches. We think we have to have more, and more, and more, and more. It is the desire for other things.

O Precious One, listen to the Word of the Lord. Well, then we come in chapter 4, to verse 4, which brings us to the eighth thing that I believe we need to do if we are going to return to Him and have Him heal our faithlessness. He says in verse 4, ―‗Circumcise yourselves to the LORD and remove the foreskins of your heart….‘‖ (Jeremiah 4:4

You say, “That sounds a little bit crude. It‟s like circumcision of a man.” Yes, it is. Alright? Circumcision was to show that you were part of the covenant that God made with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, a covenant that would make you His people.

And in it that symbol, that cut in covenant was made closest to the site of paternity, where the seed would come forth, so that another child would be conceived within a woman. And you would have a generation that goes on and on and on. Well, just as He uses that illustration, He‟s saying, “Look, you have a deceitful and desperately wicked heart.” He‟s going to talk about that later in Jeremiah. And that deceitful and desperately wicked heart needs to be dealt with. There needs to be a cutting, there needs to be a removing of that callousness outside. You need a new heart. And Jeremiah is going to tell us about that in the most glorious, glorious chapter in Jeremiah 31.

But we ain‟t there yet, all right. So He‟s saying, ―‗[If you don‟t] circumcise yourselves to the LORD [if you don‟t] remove the foreskins of your heart, men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem, [do it,] or else…,‘‖ listen, ―‗…My wrath will go forth like fire [it will] burn with none to quench….‘‖ It will be like a forest fire that we have had in the United States of America that we can‟t put out. ―‗[There will none to quench] it, because of the evil of [their] deeds.‘‖ (Jeremiah 4:4)

Now what am I doing? I‟m not blowing a literal trumpet, but I am sounding forth with the Word of God that is a warning. And it was not just a warning to the Southern Kingdom, but it is a warning to you and me. ―[Because God] is the same yesterday…today and forever.‖ (Hebrews 13:8) Now watch what He says, ―Declare in Judah…proclaim in Jerusalem and say, ‗Blow the trumpet in the land….‘‖ (Jeremiah 4:5)

Now to blow the trumpet there was a certain sound that the trumpet would give forth, that would let them know if this was a trumpet of warning. A trumpet signifying that the enemy was coming. And so He says, ―‗…Blow the trumpet…cry [out loud] “Assemble yourselves, and let us go [let us go] into the fortified cities.‖‘‖ Let‟s get there. He says, ―‗Lift up a standard towards Zion…!‘‖ A standard was like a flag, a pole so that they would know where to go. ―‗…Seek refuge, do not stand still, for I am bringing evil from the north….‘‖ (Jeremiah 4:5-6)

Now remember that map again. Remember that Babylon is going to come. He hasn‟t called them Babylon yet, but we‟re going to see He‟s talking about Babylon.

Well, Precious One, as He talks about Babylon, Babylon doesn‟t go away in Scripture. Babylon becomes an enemy, and Babylon is modern day Iraq. It becomes prosperous, the luxuriant city of all the world that is supplying all the needs to the world. And yet it is a city where devastation happens to those that are followers of God. He says, ―‗…I am bringing evil from the north, and [a] great destruction. A lion has gone up from [its] thicket…a destroyer of nations has set out; he has gone…from his place to make your land a waste….‘‖ Babylon is to the east. There is a desert between Israel and Babylon. So they go to the north, and then they come down from the north straight on them. He says, ―‗…Your cities will be ruins without inhabitant.‘‖ (Jeremiah 4:6-7)

Now as I read that to you. I just want you to, again in your mind, picture 9-11. Picture the Twin Towers, and the smoke, and the flames, and the people running and screaming. It says, ―‗For this put on sackcloth, lament…wail; for the fierce anger of the LORD has not turned back from us.‘‖ (Jeremiah 4:8)

Now so many times what we think, Beloved, is “Oh, God would never do that. God‟s a God of love.” Listen, God is a God of truth. God is a God of righteousness. God‟s a God of justice, of judgment. And if we don‟t listen to the warning, if we don‟t repent, if we don‟t return to Him, then God has to deal with us. He has to chasten us. We could stop His chastening if we would just listen. Are you listening? We‟ll be back in just a minute.

As I‟m teaching you all this are you saying, “Nah, judgment is not going to come.” That‟s what Israel thought. And they thought that because they were listening to the false prophets, because the priests were corrupt, because the rulers were corrupt. He said, ―‗It shall come about in that day…that the heart of the king and the heart of the princes will fail; and the priest will be appalled and the prophets will be [astonished].‘‖ (Jeremiah ) Why?

They‟ve been preaching [peace, peace when there was no peace.] (PARAPHRASE, Jeremiah 8:11)

―Then I said, ‗Ah, Lord… [Ah alas, O Lord God] …You have…deceived this people and Jerusalem, saying, ―You will have peace‖; whereas the sword touches the throat.‘‖ (Jeremiah 4:9-10)

God, this is what they‟ve thought because of these false prophets. You didn‟t take them out. No, God doesn‟t take them out. But God will always have a true prophet. God always has a witness, Precious One. And it‟s the Word of God. It says, ―In that time it will be said to [the] people and to Jerusalem, ‗A scorching wind from the bare heights in the wilderness in the direction of the daughter of My people—not to winnow and…to cleanse, a wind too strong for this—will come at My command; now I will pronounce [My] judgments against them. Behold, he goes up like clouds…his chariots like the whirlwind; his horses are swifter than eagles. Woe to us, for we are ruined!‘ Wash your heart from evil, O Jerusalem….‖ This is God‟s message to you. Cleanse yourself. Purify yourself. Circumcise your heart. Break up your fallow ground. He says, ―…that you may be saved. How long will…wicked thoughts lodge within you?‖ (Jeremiah 4:11-14)

Put away that pornography, put away those thoughts of evil that are against God, ―For a voice declares from Dan, and proclaims wickedness from Mount Ephraim. ‗Report it to the nations, now! Proclaim [it in] …Jerusalem, ―Besiegers come from a far country, and lift their voices against the cities of Judah. Like [the] watchmen of [the] field they are against her round about, because she has rebelled against Me….‖‘‖ (Jeremiah 15-17)

God wants you to know over, and over, and over again that this is happening because you have rebelled against Him. ―‗Your ways and your deeds have brought these things to you. This is your evil [your evil]….‘‖ (Jeremiah 4:18)

The reason that you‟ve ended up in this horrible, horrible destroyed state, Beloved, is because you did not listen to God, because you did not walk according to His Word and according to His precepts. I‟m not talking about persecution; I‟m talking about the effects of sin. ―My soul, my soul...,‖ and Jeremiah is speaking, ―…I am in anguish! Oh, my heart! My heart is pounding [within] me; I cannot be silent, because you have heard, O my soul, the sound of the trumpet, the alarm of war. Disaster [upon] disaster is proclaimed, for the whole land is devastated; suddenly my tents are devastated, my curtains in an instant.

How long must I see the standard and hear the sound of the trumpet? „For My people are foolish…they are stupid children. [They know Me not. They] …have no understanding. They are shrewd to do evil, but to do good they do not know.‘‖

He says, ―[I looked] I looked…and behold [the earth] it was formless and void; and to the heavens, and they had no light. I looked on the mountains, and behold, they were quaking, and…the hills moved to and fro. I looked, and behold, there was no man, and all the birds of the heavens had fled. I looked, and behold, the fruitful land was a wilderness, and all [of] its cities were pulled down before the LORD, before His fierce anger.‖ (Jeremiah 4:19-26)

You saw the devastation of different wars. You saw everything in shambles. You saw the bleakness. You saw the animals gone because there was no life there. This is what he‟s saying. ―…thus says the LORD, ‗The whole land [will] be a desolation, yet I will not execute…,‘‖ listen to this, ―‗…a complete destruction.‘‖ (Jeremiah 4:27)

I may judge you, but I will not destroy you. My justice, My righteousness, My holiness demands judgment, but it does not demand destruction. ―‗Return, O faithless [one and] I will heal your faithlessness….‘‖ (Jeremiah 3:22)

This is what He‟s saying. He‟s saying in verse 28, ―‗For this the earth shall mourn…the heavens above [shall] be dark, because I have spoken….‘‖ God‟s speaking, ―‗…I have purposed, and I will not change My mind [I will not] turn from it.‘ At the sound of the horseman and [the] bowman every city flees; they go into the thickets and climb among the rocks; every city is forsaken…no man dwells in them.‖ (Jeremiah 4:28-29)

They‟re running, they‟re running, they‟re hiding because of the destruction. And He says, ―And you, O desolate one, what will you do…?‖ (Jeremiah 4:30)

I‟ve dressed in scarlet. I‟ll paint my eyelids. I‟ll adorn myself and surely the enemy will be enticed by me and not destroyed by me. He says, “Oh no, oh no.”

Listen carefully, he says, ―…Although you dress in scarlet, although you decorate yourself with ornaments of gold, although you enlarge your eyes with paint, in vain you make yourself beautiful. Your lovers despise you….‖ Oh they‟ve kissed up to you, but inwardly they despise you. ―…they seek your life.‖ (Jeremiah 4:30)

―You cannot stop the enemy,” God‟s saying. “When I have sent him .You can‟t stop the enemy because you are in sin. And you are trying to handle it your own way, it doesn‟t work.” He says, ―…I heard [the] cry…of a woman [as] in labor, the anguish…of one [is] giving birth to her first child, the cry of the daughter of Zion gasping for breath, stretching out her hands, saying, ‗Ah, woe is me, for I faint [I faint, I faint] before murderers.‘‖ (Jeremiah 4:31)

If you don‟t listen to the trumpet of God‟s Word. Or if you and I don‟t give forth truth, if we don‟t give a trumpet sound that is not uncertain, if we don‟t warn people of the enemy that is to come, Precious One, if we don‟t stop people and say, “Wait a minute there is a God in heaven, and He knows what‟s going on, on earth. And He will not tolerate that sin.” ―…Be [ye] sure your sins will find you out.‖ (Numbers 32:23)

[If we don‟t warn them, their blood, Ezekiel says, will be on our hands. But if we sound the trumpet, if we warn them, if we tell them what the Word of God says, then if they don‟t listen their blood will only be on their heads.] (PARAPHRASE, Ezekiel 3:17-19) You see Jeremiah has a message. And God kept it in the Word of God for you and for me. It‟s a timeless message, and that is it shows the heart of God. He‟s a Redeemer not a destroyer. And He says, ―‗Return, O faithless sons, [and] I will heal your faithlessness….‘‖ (Jeremiah 3:22)

We sound the trumpet. I‟m sounding the trumpet to you, and I‟m saying to you, Precious One, “Return to God

Servant-Hearted ~ Chuck Swindoll

Servant-Hearted
by Charles R. Swindoll

2 Corinthians 4:1-7

In his fine little volume In the Name of Jesus, Henri Nouwen mentions three very real, albeit subtle temptations any servant of Christ faces. They correspond with the three temptations our Lord faced before He began His earthly ministry. They also fit with three observations the apostle Paul mentions in his letter to the Corinthians (2 Cor. 4:1-7).

First Temptation: To be self-sufficient and self-reliant. Instead of being so self-assured, we need to be open, unguarded, and vulnerable.

Second Temptation: To be spectacular . . . a celebrity mentality. In Nouwen's words, "Jesus refused to be a stunt man. . . . He did not come to walk on hot coals, swallow fire or put His hand in a lion's mouth to demonstrate He had something worthwhile to say."

Third Temptation: To be powerful . . . in charge. To lead is appropriate, necessary, and good. But to push, to manipulate, to be in full control . . . never! To say it simply, one God is sufficient.

Servanthood implies diligence, faithfulness, loyalty, and humility. Servants don't compete . . . or grandstand . . . or polish their image . . . or grab the limelight. They know their job, they admit their limitations, they do what they do quietly and consistently.

Servants cannot control anyone or everything, and they shouldn't try.
Servants cannot change or "fix" people.
Servants cannot meet most folks' expectations.
Servants cannot concern themselves with who gets the credit.
Servants cannot minister in the flesh or all alone.

Let me suggest five practical guidelines for cultivating the right kind of servant habits.

Whatever we do, let's do more with others. Ministry is not a solo, it's a chorus.
Whenever we do it, let's place the emphasis on quality, not quantity. Excellence, not expansion, is our goal.
Whenever we go to do it, let's do it the same as if we were doing it among those who know us the best. Not only will this keep us accountable, it'll guard us from exaggeration.
Whoever may respond, let's keep a level head. If someone criticizes, don't allow it to get you down. If someone idolizes, don't tolerate or fantasize such foolishness.
However long we minister, let's model the Master . . . a servant-hearted and a grace-oriented style.

Let's serve . . . in the name of Jesus.
A servant-hearted attitude keeps us from self-minded attitude.

My sheep hear My voice, and I know them ~ WoW

The Shepherd of Lost Sheep

John 10; Psalm 106:47-48; Proverbs 19:8

"Most assuredly, I say to you, he who does not enter the sheepfold by the door, but climbs up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. But he who enters by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the doorkeeper opens, and the sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. And when he brings out his own sheep, he goes before them; and the sheep follow him, for they know his voice. Yet they will by no means follow a stranger, but will flee from him, for they do not know the voice of strangers." Jesus used this illustration, but they did not understand the things which He spoke to them.

Then Jesus said to them again, "Most assuredly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. All who ever came before Me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not hear them. I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.

"I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep. But a hireling, he who is not the shepherd, one who does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf catches the sheep and scatters them. The hireling flees because he is a hireling and does not care about the sheep. I am the good shepherd; and I know My sheep, and am known by My own. As the Father knows Me, even so I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep. And other sheep I have which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they will hear My voice; and there will be one flock and one shepherd.

"Therefore My Father loves Me, because I lay down My life that I may take it again. No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This command I have received from My Father."

Therefore there was a division again among the Jews because of these sayings. And many of them said, "He has a demon and is mad. Why do you listen to Him?"

Others said, "These are not the words of one who has a demon. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind?"

Now it was the Feast of Dedication in Jerusalem, and it was winter. And Jesus walked in the temple, in Solomon's porch. Then the Jews surrounded Him and said to Him, "How long do You keep us in doubt? If You are the Christ, tell us plainly."

Jesus answered them, "I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in My Father's name, they bear witness of Me. But you do not believe, because you are not of My sheep, as I said to you. My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father's hand. I and My Father are one."

Then the Jews took up stones again to stone Him. Jesus answered them, "Many good works I have shown you from My Father. For which of those works do you stone Me?"

The Jews answered Him, saying, "For a good work we do not stone You, but for blasphemy, and because You, being a Man, make Yourself God."

Jesus answered them, "Is it not written in your law, 'I said, "You are gods"'? If He called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken), do you say of Him whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world, 'You are blaspheming,' because I said, 'I am the Son of God'? If I do not do the works of My Father, do not believe Me; but if I do, though you do not believe Me, believe the works, that you may know and believe that the Father is in Me,and I in Him." Therefore they sought again to seize Him, but He escaped out of their hand.

And He went away again beyond the Jordan to the place where John was baptizing at first, and there He stayed. Then many came to Him and said, "John performed no sign, but all the things that John spoke about this Man were true." And many believed in Him there.

WORSHIP

Save us, O LORD our God,
And gather us from among the Gentiles,
To give thanks to Your holy name,
To triumph in Your praise.
Blessed be the LORD God of Israel

He who gets wisdom loves his own soul;
He who keeps understanding will find good.

The Joy of Salvation ~ Joyce Meyer

And my soul shall be joyful in the Lord: it shall rejoice in his salvation.
—Psalm 35:9 (KJV)

David spoke of the joy that his soul found in the Lord and in His salvation, as we see in Psalm 51:12 (KJV) in which he prayed after falling into sin with Bathsheba, "Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit." In Luke 10:17-20 we read what Jesus told the seventy He had sent out to minister in His name:

The seventy returned with joy, saying, Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name! And He said to them, I saw Satan falling like a lightning [flash] from heaven. Behold! I have given you authority and power to trample upon serpents and scorpions, and [physical and mental strength and ability] over all the power that the enemy [possesses]; and nothing shall in any way harm you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice at this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are enrolled in heaven.

If you and I had no other reason at all to rejoice, salvation is reason enough in itself for us to be exceedingly joyful. Just imagine how you would feel if everything in your life was perfect, but you did not know Jesus, or, even worse, if you had to face your current circumstances without knowing the Lord.

Sometimes we hear people say, "I feel like I am between a rock and a hard place." When people who don't know Jesus say this, they are being honest; they are between a hard place and a hard place. But for those who are in relationship and fellowship with the Lord, they are between the Rock (Jesus) and the hard place. Standing on the Rock is a much better place to be than whatever is available to those without Christ.

Actions speak ~ Charles Stanley

James 2:14-18

The Lord calls us to share His truth with others, but oftentimes our actions and attitude completely contradict the words that are coming out of our mouths. This is an area in which we all seem to struggle from time to time.

Every day, every one of us communicates something to someone. We send messages by what we say and by what we don't say, by what we do and by what we don't do. For example, if a father quietly decides to stop tithing his income, he is sending a loud message to his children. Without ever opening his mouth, he is declaring, "Kids, you can't trust the Lord with your money. God isn't faithful to meet your needs, so you better hold on to as much as you possibly can." Is that the message you want to pass on to your children?

You might argue, "Well, I'm not really a tither, but I would never tell my kids that you can't trust God." Yet you have already sent an unspoken message loud and clear. What people?especially children?witness in our behavior speaks much louder than what we actually say with our mouths.

The apostle Paul understood what powerful lessons we teach by our actions. For this reason, he made sure he modeled the right behavior and values for his spiritual children to emulate (2 Thess. 3:7-9).

It is not an issue of whether or not we will communicate a message. Rather, the issue is, What kind of message are you already communicating? Search yourself for any disparity between what you say and what you do, and choose to share a complete, unified message of hope with the world.

Let God's peace rule your heart ~ Jon Courson

And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful.
Colossians 3:15

The word translated ‘rule’ is a Greek word which describes an official at an athletic event, similar to a present-day umpire. When people ask, ‘Should I move? Should I take that job? Should I marry him?’ I often answer with a question: what’s your heart telling you? If you’re walking with the Lord, the peace of God will be an umpire in your heart calling 'Safe!' or 'Out!'

Women, when he asks you to marry him, don’t say yes if there isn’t a deep sense of peace in your heart. ‘You just have cold feet,’ he’ll say. But I suggest it is much more than cold feet. It is God working deep within your soul.

Don’t move, gang, without the peace of God umpiring and ruling in your heart.

The deceptive power of sin ~ Bob Coy

SINS POWER TO DECEIVE

Abraham begot Isaac. Now Isaac pleaded with the LORD for his wife, because she was barren; and the LORD granted his plea, and Rebekah his wife conceived. (Genesis 25:19-21 NKJV)

Abraham had a son named Isaac, who went on to have twin sons of his own. One was named Esau and the other was named Jacob. Even though they were twins, Esau was born ahead of Jacob, which counted for a lot in biblical times because the firstborn was entitled to receive the birthright, or spiritual mantle, from his father.

After a few years, it became clear to Esau's mother that he wasn't the one to carry on the spiritual legacy established by Abraham. He was alive to the world yet dead to the things of God. Surely, Jacob would be a better standard-bearer for the family. So Rebekah disguised Jacob as Esau, and she tricked her husband into passing the birthright on to the younger son instead.

In hindsight, it's clear that Jacob was a better candidate than Esau. But we still can't get away from the fact that something wrong happened here. Deception was used to try and advance God's agenda. People resorted to sin to produce something righteous. This shows us how subtle and deceptive sin can be. Here we have Rebekah and Jacob doing something so wrong...something that they're convinced is so right! In an ironic twist, the deceivers were also the ones who were deceived-deceived into thinking their wrong was right.

Did God ultimately manage to redeem the situation? He did, but there were some painful consequences. Jacob ran away from home because Esau was so angry with him. The house was now divided, the brothers were now enemies, and Rebekah would never see Jacob again.

What we need to take away from this story is that sin is deceptive. So much so that it has the ability to make us think wrong is actually right.

Discuss, Dig, Decide

Discuss as a group the danger of mixing up right and wrong. Read Isaiah 5:20 and share some modern day examples of this verse. How do you see the devil deceiving those around you?

Dig into Genesis 25:19–34. How does this story demonstrate the danger of mixing up right and wrong? What motivated Jacob to do what he did? Dig further into Genesis Chapter 27. Why did Rebekah do what she did? How did God ultimately redeem this situation?

Decide as a group to minister to someone who has been hurt by the devil’s deception. Who do you know who has recently been under the enemy’s attack and has lost discernment between right and wrong? Determine the best way to lovingly confront and minister to this person.

Reaching others with the Gospel ~ Greg Laurie

No Room for Prejudice

Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria and preached Christ to them.
--Acts 8:5

Being an effective communicator of the gospel requires a willingness to reach out to people who are different from you. We tend to want to hang around people who look like us, who talk like us, and who are just like us. But how willing are we to leave our comfort zone and go to a person completely different from us with the message of the gospel?

To put it another way, are we willing to acknowledge that all prejudice is wrong? Everyone needs Jesus, and we need to go without embarrassment and share the gospel with them. We can talk all day about how to do evangelism effectively. We can go to classes on how to share our faith and read books about it. We can memorize a list of conversation-starters that can help turn a conversation toward evangelism. All these things are good. But none of them will matter if we don't care about others. People can tell whether or not we care about them. Even a dog can tell. And a person will know whether you are sharing the gospel out of sincerity or a mere sense of duty.

The Bible gives us the example of Philip, who had a heart for unbelievers. Along with Stephen and others, he was called to be a deacon in the church. And when Stephen was martyred and Saul of Tarsus began to attack Christians, where did Philip go? To Samaria. Philip was a Jew, yet he went to Samaria. This was significant, because Jews hated Samaritans, and Samaritans hated Jews. Yet Philip went to these people, people whom Jews normally would not speak to, much less want to reach.

May God give us compassion for people who do not yet know Him. Philip had that, and we should too.

Does God care about wickedness? ~ Raul Ries

The Seven Trumpet Judgments

“So the seven angels who had the seven trumpets
prepared themselves to sound.”

Revelation 8:6

Does God care about wickedness? Do the ungodly get away with evil?

Read Revelation, chapter eight. The seven trumpet judgments will wreak great havoc on the earth.
  • Trumpet #1 will destroy a third of the earth’s trees and grass.
  • Trumpet #2 will destroy a third of the ocean.
  • Trumpet #3 will contaminate a third of the earth’s water supply.
  • Trumpet #4 will destroy a third of the sun, moon and stars.
  • Trumpet #5 will torture unbelievers- they will be in so much pain they will want to die but cannot do so.
  • Trumpet #6 will destroy a third of mankind.
  • Trumpet #7 ushers in the last series of judgments, which are called the seven bowls.
God is patient and longsuffering. However, a day is coming when the wickedness of men will be judged. Those that refuse the gift of God’s grace will face terrible wrath.

Thought for the Day:
“Vengeance is mine, and recompense; their foot shall slip in due time; for the day of their calamity is at hand, and the things to come hasten upon them.”
                                                                                                 -Deuteronomy 32:35

Guard me from the seductive influence of this godless world ~ Bob Hoekstra

Manasseh…did evil in the sight of the LORD, according to the abominations of the nations whom the LORD had cast out before the children of Israel…And the LORD spoke to Manasseh and his people, but they would not listen. Therefore the LORD brought upon them…the army of the king of Assyria, who took Manasseh with hooks, bound him with bronze fetters, and carried him off to Babylon. (2 Chronicles 33:1-2, 10-11)

Manasseh was another king who walked in prideful rebellion against the Lord. "He did evil in the sight of the LORD." His pride was even more shocking than Nebuchadnezzar's (who ruled in Babylon), since Manasseh ruled in Jerusalem and had been raised by a godly father, King Hezekiah.

Manasseh was heavily influenced by the godless nations that dominated the land before God gave it to Israel. His evil was "according to the abominations of the nations whom the LORD had cast out before the children of Israel." The spiritual behavior of these Canaanite nations was abominable in God's sight. They indulged in licentious worship of idols on the hills and mountains. Manasseh "rebuilt the high places which Hezekiah his father had broken down; he raised up altars for the Baals, and made wooden images; and he worshiped all the host of heaven and served them" (2 Chronicles 33:3). Manasseh also brought idolatry into the very Temple of the Lord in Jerusalem. "He also built altars in the house of the LORD, of which the LORD had said, 'In Jerusalem shall My name be forever'" (2 Chronicles 33:4).

The nations that preceded Israel in the land were even engaged in sacrificing their children and seeking demonic guidance. Shockingly, Manasseh also "caused his sons to pass through the fire in the Valley of the Son of Hinnom; he practiced soothsaying, used witchcraft and sorcery, and consulted mediums and spiritists" (2 Chronicles 33:6). Actually, Manasseh brought more evil into the land than his abominable predecessors. "So Manasseh seduced Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to do more evil than the nations whom the LORD had destroyed before the children of Israel" (2 Chronicles 33:9). Lovingly, the Lord reached out to this pridefully rebellious king. "And the LORD spoke to Manasseh and his people, but they would not listen." The ultimate result of this persistent resistance was humiliating and painful captivity. "Therefore the LORD brought upon them the captains of the army of the king of Assyria, who took Manasseh with hooks, bound him with bronze fetters, and carried him off to Babylon."

Heavenly Father, please guard me from the seductive influence of this godless world. I am already too familiar with the bondage that worldly indulgence brings. Please nurture to fullness every godly seed ever planted in my life, for Your glory, Amen.

Faith is the link to the things of God ~ Bob Caldwell

5:11 And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.

Faith is the link to the things of God. It is faith that becomes the catalyst of our new life in Christ as well as the victory over sin, a fallen world, and the devil himself. This faith is rooted in the witness, the testimony of God. John tells us this witness comes from the Father, the "Word" Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit (v. 6-7).

The end result of this witness to our faith is a settled confidence that eternal life is our own personal possession (v. 9). This confidence soon expands to include our confidence in being heard by Him in prayer (v. 14-15). We "know" He hears us and will answer all our prayers that are in harmony with His will.

An example of a legitimate basis of expectant prayer is given in our prayer for those who have been overtaken by sin. Prayer for such a brother should be given with complete confidence that God will extend His power to bring victory to our brother's life. A willful rejection of Christ is the only sin that leads to death and cannot be overcome.

Our confidence in prayer for believers who have been overtaken by sin is rooted in God's promise. God promises that those born of Him are able to keep themselves from the wicked intention of Satan. We must stand in the knowledge that we are of God and under His Kingdom, a Kingdom that has complete authority over the kingdom of darkness (v. 18-19).

Lastly, our confidence in who we are in Christ results in a deep inner witness of the reality of Christ and the truth found in Him. It is a spiritual reality that is our solid hope of the potential glory that has been placed within us.

1 John 5:11-21

11 And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. 12 He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. 13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.
Confidence and Compassion in Prayer

14 Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15 And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.
16 If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin which does not lead to death, he will ask, and He will give him life for those who commit sin not leading to death. There is sin leading to death. I do not say that he should pray about that. 17 All unrighteousness is sin, and there is sin not leading to death.
Knowing the True—Rejecting the False

18 We know that whoever is born of God does not sin; but he who has been born of God keeps himself, and the wicked one does not touch him.

19 We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one.

20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding, that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.

21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.

1 John 5:11-21

v. 11 This Life is in His Son – This is what the Spirit, the Word, and the blood are testifying to. God has given us eternal life. If eternal life is a gift of God, you cannot attain this life through your own efforts. And you cannot receive this eternal life apart from God's Son, because this life is found in His Son (John 3:16, 36; 5:21, 26; 6:27, 40, 53; 20:3).

v. 12 Has Life…Does Not Have Life – Here is one of the clearest teaching of the New Testament concerning eternal life. This eternal life that God gives is only found in Jesus Christ (John 17:3). Outside of Jesus Christ there is no life. This settles once and for all the question of validity of man's religions and their power to save or give life.

v. 13 That You May Know that You Have Eternal Life – The Bible is written that you might know that you have eternal life. God's intention is that you might know that you already have eternal life through simple faith in Jesus Christ (Rom. 5:15-18, 10:9-13; Eph. 2:8-9; Titus 3:5).

v. 14 the Confidence That We Have in Him – The word confidence implies an assurance that produces open boldness and cheerful courage. This confidence is not in ourselves, but in Him. Any strength we have as Christians is found in the person of Jesus Christ and not in ourselves. Our strength is temporal and unreliable. Christ's strength is permanent, unchanging and unlimited (Col. 1:13-19, Heb. 1:1-4, 13:8).

if We Ask Anything According to His Will – The key phrase here is according to His will. The truth is, we are obligated to obey Him. And anything we receive from Him is by grace. The specific promise found here is that, He hears us IF we pray, according to His will. This text also implies that there are any number of things we can ask for in prayer that may not be according to His will. There is no promise in this text that God will hear and answer any prayer that is not according to His will.

He Hears Us – Our first concern in prayer should be that He hears us. This verse implies that if we pray contrary to His will He doesn't hear us. For instance, we know that God will not hear the prayers of an unrepentant sinner (Ps. 66:18, Is. 59:1-2).

v. 15 If We Know That He Hears Us – Here is our confidence. If we pray anything according to His will.

v. 16 Sin Leading to Death – This is rejecting the work of God's Holy Spirit who leads you to repentance and accepting Christ (Mark 3:28-29; Heb. 3:12-19, 6:4-6, 10:26-31).

v. 17 All Unrighteousness is Sin – All wrongdoing is sin. And no one is perfect or innocent before God (Rom. 3:10, 23; Ecc. 7:20; Ps. 130:3).

Unrighteousness – adikia (Gk.) doing wrong, wickedness

There is Sin Not Leading to Death – In the midst of this very serious talk about a sin leading to death it is important to note that not every sin will lead us to physical or spiritual death. Every Christian should be conscious of the sins in his or her life (1 John 1:8-10).

v. 18 We Know – eido (Gk.) to experience any state or condition. There are things in life we can know for certain. John is referring to Christians who have been taught the truth through God's Word.

Born of God – This phrase is synonymous with being born again (John 1:13; 3:3, 7; 1Peter 1:23) or saved (John 3:17; 5:34; Acts 2:21, 47; 4:12; 15:11; 16:30, 31; Rom. 10:9, 13; 11:26; Eph. 2:5, 8; Titus 3:5).

Does Not Sin – When an unregenerate man (a person who has not been born of God ) sins, he is doing what comes naturally to him. He is simply living according to his nature. When a Christian sins, he is going against the new nature given him from God. Therefore, John is saying that one who is born again does not live in sin.

Keeps Himself – Jesus keeps the saint from sin. Jesus is the keeper of our souls (John 10:28-29, Rom. 8:28-39). Yet, there is also a certain responsibility of the believer to live in obedience to God and keep himself from sin (Acts 15:29; 1 John 5:21; Jude 21). The context of this verse indicates that the Christian has been given a new nature from God and has been empowered to live according to that new nature. He has also been given the power and responsibility to resist temptation and to not live according to his old nature. Also see Psalms 17:4, 18:23, 39:1, 119:101; Proverbs 4:23; John 15:4,7,9; and 1 John 3:3, 5:21.

the Wicked One – These three English words have been translated from one Greek word, poneros which can mean derelict, vicious, bad, evil, grievous, harm, lewd, malicious. The wicked one here obviously refers to the devil or any of his demons.

Does Not Touch Him – What John is saying is that the devil and his demons cannot overpower one who is born of God to harm him.

v. 19 We Know That We Are of God – Again John stresses that we who are born of God can know for a certainty that we are of God (Rom. 8:16).

Whole World Lies Under the Sway of the Wicked One – Those who have not been born of God do not have the ability to resist the wicked one. They are under the devil's power. Keep in mind that when a non-Christian sins, he is just living according to his sinful nature. He is simply doing what comes naturally to him.

v. 20 Has Given Us an Understanding – Jesus has given us much more than just a spiritual feeling. He has given us a true understanding of spiritual things. This true understanding leads us into true relationship with God.

True – alethinos (Gk.) real, true genuine. Opposite to what is fictitious, counterfeit, imaginary, simulated or pretended. Jesus Christ has given us true understanding that leads to true relationship with the true God.

In Him Who is True – Him who is true refers to God Himself. This is a description of extreme intimacy with God that we would be in Him who is true. The only other place where this phrase is found in scripture is a record of John receiving instruction from the Lord God Almighty (Rev. 1:8-11).

In His Son Jesus Christ – The only way we can be in Him who is true is by being in His Son Jesus Christ. When we are in Christ we are in the Father who is true (John 14:20-21).

This is the True God and Eternal Life – This is a description of the intimate relationship between the Father and the Son. This is very similar to what Jesus Himself said during His prayer to the Father (John 17:3). You cannot separate one from the other (John 5:23,1 John 5:11-13, John 17:3).

v. 21 Little Children – As his custom, the aged apostle John writes to his readers as a loving father. This is his style and mood in all his epistles. Thus, he accurately represents the heart of God to his readers.

Keep Yourselves From Idols – An idol is any person, place or thing, which receives the honor and attention rightly belonging to God. It is important to realize that just as there is a true, there is also a false. And just as it is each Christian's responsibility to follow Him who is true, it is also each Christian's responsibility to reject all that is false (v. 18).

Amen – amen (Gk.) so it is, so be it, may it be fulfilled.

And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. –1 John 5:11

What a simple truth, God, but what a life-changing one. We pray today for those who do not know the truth of Jesus Christ and the grace that You freely provide for us through Him. We pray that those who will not receive eternal life are able to hear and receive Your truth.

Quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD~ Daily Light

Let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.

Now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations: that the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ. -

We glory in tribulations: ... knowing that tribulation worketh patience; and patience, experience; and experience, hope.

It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the LORD. - Ye have in heaven a better and an enduring substance. Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward. For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise. - Our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace, comfort your hearts.

EVENING
God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ.
Judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God. - The Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: because he is the Son of man. - The Son of God ... hath his eyes like unto a flame of fire.

They say, How doth God know? and is there knowledge in the most High? - These things thou hast done, and I kept silence; thou thoughtest that I was altogether such an one as thyself: but I will reprove thee, and set them in order before thine eyes. - There is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known.

Lord, all my desire is before thee; and my groaning is not hid from thee. - Examine me, O LORD, and prove me; try my reins and my heart.

Old Testament - In yesterday and today's Isaiah chapter 45 readings we read about King Cyrus of Persia!  Verse 13 says this about Cyrus in today's readings: "I will raise up Cyrus to fulfill my righteous purpose, and I will guide all his actions. He will restore my city and free my captive people--and not for a reward! I, the LORD Almighty, have spoken!"  The interesting thing to note here is that Cyrus was not Jewish - he was a Gentile ruler who was raised up for the purpose of freeing the Israelite captives from exile in Babylon and allowing them to return to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple.  In yesterday's readings in chapter 45 verse 1 Cyrus was even referred to as "God's anointed."  This is the only place in the Bible where a Gentile ruler is said to be anointed.  It's also very interesting to note that Isaiah is calling Cyrus by name some 150 years before Cyrus ruled!  Isaiah prophesied from 740 to 681 B.C. and Cyrus ruled from 559 to 530 B.C.  Some Bible commentaries suggest that Cyrus read these prophesies of Isaiah during his reign and was so moved by them that he decided to indeed fulfill them.  In any case, Cyrus played a pivotal role in our spiritual history - allowing the promise of Abraham's many descendants to continue to the fulfillment of the coming Messiah in Jesus!  Below is a replica of a Bas-Relief from the 6th century B.C. found in Pasargade, the capital city of Persia founded by Cyrus II. It depicts "Cyrus the Great" (as Cyrus is commonly referred to):

Isaiah chapter 45 verses 22 & 23 are powerful and foreshadow Jesus' ministry here on earth: "Let all the world look to me for salvation! For I am God; there is no other. I have sworn by my own name, and I will never go back on my word: Every knee will bow to me, and every tongue will confess allegiance to my name." These verses are also foreshadowing of the book of Revelation that we will read later this year.  We read Paul quoting these verses to describe Jesus in Romans 14:11 and Philippians 2:10-11.  Do you believe that all the world should look to God for salvation?  Is there another god?  Is Jesus God?  Do you believe that one day every tongue will confess allegiance to the name of Jesus and every knee will bow to Jesus?

New Testament - Great teachings from Paul today about unity in the body of Christ!  Chapter 4 verses 4 through 6 are beautiful - "We are all one body, we have the same Spirit, and we have all been called to the same glorious future. There is only one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and there is only one God and Father, who is over us all and in us all and living through us all."  Do you believe these words of Paul's?  Do you believe that all of us in Christ are all one body?  That we have the same Spirit?  And that we have been called to the same glorious future?  I like that last piece of verse 6 - God the Father is living through us all!  Do you realize that God the Father, who is indeed over you, and is also literally living through you?  This is powerful to consider...

Verses 14 and 15 I think are so important for each of us to meditate upon: "Then we will no longer be like children, forever changing our minds about what we believe because someone has told us something different or because someone has cleverly lied to us and made the lie sound like the truth. Instead, we will hold to the truth in love, becoming more and more in every way like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church."  The thing that these verses remind me of is that indeed at some point we are all "children" in our faith.  When we are new to Christianity we are certainly children who need others to lead us, disciple us, and help show us the way.  And I guess as I think about this, we should always be like children before God - but I don't think we should always be children before humans.  Because if we remain as children before humans, then we are at risk of "forever changing our minds about what we believe because someone has cleverly lied to us and make the lie sound like the truth."  Has this ever happened to you?  I know it has happened to me and it's scary to think about.  I once heard a church pastor say that his most important job was to help his congregation become "self-feeders" when it comes to their faith.  I thought this was fantastic and very wise!  This pastor did not want his congregation to always rely on him and what he had to say on Sundays as their only source of spiritual food.  This pastor wanted his congregation to be able to spiritually grow in other ways outside of Sunday services - through Bible study, small groups, and other spiritual disciplines.  So, this may be a good time to ask - are you a "self-feeder" when it comes to your faith?  Can you grow in your faith and find food for yourself spiritually outside of what you hear at church?  If you're new to the faith, I wouldn't stress about this - but think about it.  I do think each of us should aim to become "self-feeders."  Why?  Well, if we don't then we are so reliant on the words of other people that we could be misled down wrong paths.  The one thing that I think really is critical for each of us in our journeys of becoming self-feeders is reading, studying, and really meditating upon Scripture.  If we can become well grounded in Scripture then we can filter through the lens of the Bible what others are telling us.  It is amazing how much "spiritual stuff" or rules or rituals that I hear is so "important to practice" from others that I don't see in the Bible!  In fact, as I'm typing all of this, I will also say that I sincerely hope you don't take anything I say on this blog as Truth - it's a blog trying to draw out some practicalities and questions and reflections and commentary based on the Truth, the Bible - but what I write is not the Word.  As Paul writes in verse 15 today, instead of remaining forever children in our faith before people, let us "hold to the truth in love, becoming more and more in every way like Christ, who is the head of his body, the church."

Psalms - Today in Psalm 68 verse 20 we read – “Our God is a God who saves; from the Sovereign LORD comes escape from death.” Do you believe God is a God who saves us? How did / does God do this saving? Do you believe that escape from death comes from God and his Son? I’ve been reflecting on this “death” aspect of our fallen world a bit lately, which has been sad to reflect upon. I had an experience with a few friends very recently where I was reminded of how self-destructive we can be in our lives. I think that without Jesus we can oftentimes not know where to turn for an escape from death – we do not know where to turn from an escape from our own self destructive behaviors. My friends need Jesus. I need Jesus. The world needs Jesus. Our God is a God who saves. From God and Jesus comes escape from death. May these last few months of 2007 bring us, our friends, and families closer to the God who saves!

Proverbs - Proverbs 23 verses 3 and 4 can be looked at literally or metaphorically - "A house is built by wisdom and becomes strong through good sense. Through knowledge its rooms are filled with all sorts of precious riches and valuables."  Has your house been built by wisdom?  Has your life been built by wisdom?  Is your house strong through good sense?  Is your life strong through good sense?  Is your house filled with all sorts of precious riches and valuables through knowledge?  Through knowledge, is your very life filled with all sorts of precious riches and valuables?  Below is the famous Dutch Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh's "The White House at Night" from the year 1890:

Worship God:  Isaiah chapter 45 verse 23 reminded me of the fantastic Brian Doerksen song "Come, Now is the Time to Worship" which includes the lyrics: "One day every tongue will confess you are God.  One day every knee will bow.  Still the greatest treasure remains for those who choose you now!"  I just found a wonderful live version of this song performed by the Oslo Gospel Choir in May 2005 at the St. Jan Church in Gouda, The Netherlands.  This is a great song!  Clap your hands!
