CLASSIC DEVOTIONALS: "Love Me More" -God Calling

GOD CALLING

 "Love Me More"

Jesus, our Lord, we Thee adore. Oh, make us love Thee more and more.

Yes! I would draw you closer and closer to Me by bonds of Love. The Love of the sinner for the Savior, of the rescued for the Rescuer, of the sheep for the Loving Shepherd, of the child for its Father.

So many ties of Love there are to bind you to Me.

Each experience in your life of Joy, and sorrow, of difficulty or success, of hardship or ease, of danger or safety, each makes its own particular demand on Me. Each serves to answer the prayer: "Make me love Thee more and more."

Whom having not seen, ye love; in whom, though now ye see him not, yet
believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory. 1 Peter 1:8

CLASSIC DEVOTIONALS: "Imitation of Christ" -Thomas a Kempis

The Imitation of Christ

OF THE IMITATION OF CHRIST,

AND OF CONTEMPT OF THE WORLD

AND ALL ITS VANITIES

He that followeth me shall not walk in darkness,(1) saith the Lord. These are the words of Christ; and they teach us how far we must imitate His life and character, if we seek true illumination, and deliverance from all blindness of heart.

Let it be our most earnest study, therefore, to dwell upon the life of Jesus Christ.

2. His teaching surpasseth all teaching of holy men, and such as have His Spirit find therein the hidden manna.(2) But there are many who, though they frequently hear the Gospel, yet feel but little longing after it, because they have not the mind of Christ. He, therefore, that will fully and with true wisdom understand the words of Christ, let him strive to conform his whole life to that mind of Christ.

3. What doth it profit thee to enter into deep discussion concerning the Holy Trinity, if thou lack humility, and be thus displeasing to the Trinity? For verily it is not deep words that make a man holy and upright; it is a good life which maketh a man dear to God. I had rather feel contrition than be skilful in the definition thereof.

If thou knewest the whole Bible, and the sayings of all the philosophers, what should all this profit thee without the love and grace of God? Vanity of vanities, all is vanity, save to love God, and Him only to serve. That is the highest wisdom, to cast the world behind us, and to reach forward to the heavenly kingdom.

4. It is vanity then to seek after, and to trust in, the riches that shall perish. It is vanity, too, to covet honours, and to lift up ourselves on high. It is vanity to follow the desires of the flesh and be led by them, for this shall bring misery at the last.

It is vanity to desire a long life, and to have little care for a good life. It is vanity to take thought only for the life which now is, and not to look forward to the things which shall be hereafter. It is vanity to love that which quickly passeth away, and not to hasten where eternal joy abideth.

5. Be ofttimes mindful of the saying,(3) The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear with hearing. Strive, therefore, to turn away thy heart from the love of the things that are seen, and to set it upon the things that are not seen.

For they who follow after their own fleshly lusts, defile the conscience, and destroy the grace of God.

CLASSIC DEVOTIONALS: "Morning & Evening" -C.H. Spurgeon

Morning

"He was heard in that he feared."
Hebrews 5:7

Did this fear arise from the infernal suggestion that he was utterly forsaken. There may be sterner trials than this, but surely it is one of the worst to be utterly forsaken? "See," said Satan, "thou hast a friend nowhere!

Thy Father hath shut up the bowels of his compassion against thee. Not an angel in his courts will stretch out his hand to help thee. All heaven is alienated from thee; thou art left alone.

See the companions with whom thou hast taken sweet counsel, what are they worth? Son of Mary, see there thy brother James, see there thy loved disciple John, and thy bold apostle Peter, how the cowards sleep when thou art in thy sufferings! Lo!

Thou hast no friend left in heaven or earth. All hell is against thee. I have stirred up mine infernal den. I have sent my missives throughout all regions summoning every prince of darkness to set upon thee this night, and we will spare no arrows, we will use all our infernal might to overwhelm thee: and what wilt thou do, thou solitary one?"

It may be, this was the temptation; we think it was, because the appearance of an angel unto him strengthening him removed that fear. He was heard in that he feared; he was no more alone, but heaven was with him. It may be that this is the reason of his coming three times to his disciples-as Hart puts it-
"Backwards and forwards thrice he ran,

As if he sought some help from man."

He would see for himself whether it were really true that all men had forsaken him; he found them all asleep; but perhaps he gained some faint comfort from the thought that they were sleeping, not from treachery, but from sorrow, the spirit indeed was willing, but the flesh was weak. At any rate, he was heard in that he feared. Jesus was heard in his deepest woe; my soul, thou shalt be heard also.

Evening

"In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit."
Luke 10:21

The Saviour was "a man of sorrows," but every thoughtful mind has discovered the fact that down deep in his innermost soul he carried an inexhaustible treasury of refined and heavenly joy.

Of all the human race, there was never a man who had a deeper, purer, or more abiding peace than our Lord Jesus Christ. "He was anointed with the oil of gladness above his fellows."

His vast benevolence must, from the very nature of things, have afforded him the deepest possible delight, for benevolence is joy. There were a few remarkable seasons when this joy manifested itself. "

At that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth." Christ had his songs, though it was night with him; though his face was marred, and his countenance had lost the lustre of earthly happiness, yet sometimes it was lit up with a matchless splendour of unparalleled satisfaction, as he thought upon the recompense of the reward, and in the midst of the congregation sang his praise unto God.

In this, the Lord Jesus is a blessed picture of his church on earth. At this hour the church expects to walk in sympathy with her Lord along a thorny road; through much tribulation she is forcing her way to the crown.

To bear the cross is her office, and to be scorned and counted an alien by her mother's children is her lot; and yet the church has a deep well of joy, of which none can drink but her own children.

There are stores of wine, and oil, and corn, hidden in the midst of our Jerusalem, upon which the saints of God are evermore sustained and nurtured; and sometimes, as in our Saviour's case, we have our seasons of intense delight, for "There is a river, the streams whereof shall make glad the city of our God. "

Exiles though we be, we rejoice in our King; yea, in him we exceedingly rejoice, while in his name we set up our banners.

CLASSIC DEVOTIONALS: "Sin of Worry" -Streams in the Desert

Sin of Worry
"Fret not" (Ps. 37:1).
This to me is a Divine command; the same as "Thou shalt not steal." Now let us get to the definition of fretting. One good definition is, "Made rough on the surface." "Rubbed, or worn away"; and a peevish, irrational, fault-finding person not only wears himself out, but is very wearing to others. To fret is to be in a state of vexation, and in this Psalm we are not only told not to fret because of evildoers, but to fret not "in anywise." It is injurious, and God does not want us to hurt ourselves.

A physician will tell you that a fit of anger is more injurious to the system than a fever, and a fretful disposition is not conducive to a healthy body; and you know rules are apt to work both ways, and the next step down from fretting is crossness, and that amounts to anger. Let us settle this matter, and be obedient to the command, "Fret not."--Margaret Bottome

CLASSIC DEVOTIONALS: "Thou art a God ready to pardon" - Daily Light

October 9
MORNING
Thou art a God ready to pardon, gracious and merciful.
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. - The longsuffering of our Lord is salvation.
For this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all longsuffering for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting. - Whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.
Despisest thou the riches of his goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance? - Rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil.
NEH. 9:17. II Pet. 3:9. II Pet. 3:15. I Tim. 1:16. Rom. 15:4. Rom. 2:4. Joel 2:13.
EVENING
The words of the Lord are pure words.
Thy word is very pure: therefore thy servant loveth it. - The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes. - Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him. Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.
Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee. I will meditate in thy precepts, and have respect unto thy ways. - Brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report, if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. - As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word that ye may grow thereby.
We are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ. - Nor handling the word of God deceitfully.

CLASSIC DEVOTIONALS: "Our Guide into Truth" -A.W.Tozer

TOZER DEVOTIONAL

Our Guide into Truth

The unity of all things in Christ is a concept every believer should lay hold of. When we witness the future day of Christ’s triumph, when He returns and we reach the consummation of all things, then we will fully comprehend the necessity for the “all things” in God’s eternal plan.

Many people are having their greatest battles over their deepening sense of futility and uselessness. It is important that we grasp God’s revelation that every one of us is essential to His great plan for the ages. You will seek answers in vain from fellow men and women. Seek your answers rather from God and His Word. He is sovereign; He is still running His world.

God wants us to know that He must have all the parts in order to compose His great eternal symphony. He would have us assured that each one of us is indispensable to His grand theme!

Verse

But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. John 16:13-14

Thought

It is the Holy Spirit who is the ultimate revealer of Christ and His Word. God speaks and ministers to us through other members of Christ's body, just as He seeks to reach out through you and me to others. But the Spirit is the one who authenticates and applies truth. Let's be in tune with Him!

Prayer

Thank You, Lord, for the Church through whom You minister to me. And thank You for the Holy Spirit who is the ultimate revealer of You and Your Word.

CLASSIC DEVOTIONALS: "Pull Yourself Together" -My Utmost for His Highest

Pull Yourself Together

I cannot save and sanctify myself; I cannot atone for sin; I cannot redeem the world; I can not make right what is wrong, pure what is impure, holy what is unholy. That is all the sovereign work of God. Have I faith in what Jesus Christ has done? He has made a perfect Atonement, am I in the habit of constantly realizing it? The great need is not to do things, but to believe things.

The Redemption of Christ is not an experience, it is the great act of God which He has performed through Christ, and I have to build my faith upon it. If I construct my faith on my experience, I produce that most unscriptural type, an isolated life, my eyes fixed on my own whiteness. Beware of the piety that has no pre-supposition in the Atonement of the Lord.

It is of no use for anything but a sequestered life; it is useless to God and a nuisance to man. Measure every type of experience by our Lord Himself. We cannot do anything pleasing to God unless we deliberately build on the pre-supposition of the Atonement.

The Atonement of Jesus has to work out in practical, unobtrusive ways in my life. Every time I obey, absolute Deity is on my side, so that the grace of God and natural obedience coincide. Obedience means that I have banked everything on the Atonement, and my obedience is met immediately by the delight of the supernatural grace of God.

Beware of the piety that denies the natural life, it is a fraud. Continually bring yourself to the bar of the Atonement – where is the discernment of the Atonement in this thing, and in that?

"Honoring God in the Morning"

Correct, Correcting
Joel 2:14
"Who knows? Perhaps he will give you a reprieve, sending you a blessing instead of this curse. Perhaps you will be able to offer grain and wine to the LORD your God as before."
NLT
God has a plan for everything. We may not appreciate it at the time, but God will even use correction to take us to that next step in ministry. Like children, we all end up straying out of line from time to time. Whether we grow weary from the fight or simply lose sight of Christ, we can fall into error. This is where loving correction is important.
God's desire for correction is to restore us into right standing with Him. This should also be our motivation when we approach brothers and sisters in Christ. Our desire is to see them blessed as they walk in obedience. When we correct without a true desire to see the person restored, we can come across as bitter or judgmental and end up driving that person further from Christ. When we walk in humility and approach them with loving concern and a gentle spirit, we will often find them open to what we have to say. Whenever you find yourself faced with the task of correction, pray often and trust the Lord to work through you.
Life Lesson: Correction without restoration will leave your mission unfulfilled in purpose.
Dear God,
Thank You for Your correction in times when I have lost sight of You. Help me to correct others with wisdom and gentleness. Use me as a tool to bring restoration to those who need help along the way. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Living to tell what He died to say,

"Honoring God in the Morning"

IT TAKES/BUILDS FAITH

Faith . . . gives us assurance about things we cannot see. Hebrews 11:1 (NLT)

As you make your way through God's Word, it doesn't take long before you start to notice a trend-God is very interested in producing faith in His people. By faith, we're referring to the description given above: Faith is what enables us to be certain about the things that we can't see.

This goes against human nature, which is sensory-driven. Human nature defines reality based on the evidence that can be acquired through our sense of sight, sound, taste, touch, and hearing. God wants us to live on a higher level. He wants us to define reality based on who He is and what He has said. And it takes faith in order to do that. It takes trust in things that we can't see.

One of the most common objections to prayer is that you can't physically see whom you're talking to. "If I could just see God on His throne surrounded by a multitude of angels, then I'd pray for sure."

But again, God doesn't want us to be creatures that are limited to our senses. He wants us to be people of faith, and it's no coincidence that something as central to our spiritual well-being as prayer really requires us to trust in what we can't see. Prayer is God's way of keeping us on the faith-track.

But prayer doesn't just require faith, it also builds it. Whenever we experience spiritual realities in prayer, whether it's an answer to prayer or hearing God's still, small voice, it strengthens our confidence in those things. The fact that we can't see whom we're praying to speaks of God's love for us, because by not showing Himself to us, He's showing us how to walk and grow in faith.

How does the measure of faith affect the way in which you pray? Where does faith come from, according to Ephesians 2:8? Are you carrying a burden? How can you practice the principle in Galatians 6:2.

When You Are Falsely Accused

Read the Scripture: Psalm 109
But you, O Sovereign LORD, deal well with me for your name's sake; out of the goodness of your love, deliver me (Psalm 109:21).
Here is a man who is under attack from rather unscrupulous persons. Those who attack him so bitterly are obviously not to be trusted. They are deceitful, he says. They are wicked. In other words, they are determined upon evil, and they are thoroughly unscrupulous; they do not care what they say or what they do. With lying tongues they are out to destroy.
Perhaps some of you have had this experience. Someone who has deliberately sought to slander you, to besmirch your character, or ruin your reputation, has unjustly accused you and you know just how this man felt. Furthermore, these people are wholly unjustified in this attack. He says they do this without a cause, at least as far as the psalmist David can see, and we take him to be an honest man. He sees absolutely no reason for their accusations. They are afflicting him, upsetting him, and attacking him without his having given them any reason to do so.
What shall he do? Well, what he does is beautiful. He commits the whole matter to the Lord in prayer. This closing prayer of the psalm is a marvelous picture of the right attitude, the right reaction, and the right way to handle this kind of a situation.
Notice that the first thing he does is to commit the cause to God. But you, O Sovereign LORD, deal well with me for your name's sake. Here is a man who understands how life operates. He understands the truth behind the admonition of Scripture, both in the Old and New Testament, 'It is mine to avenge; I will repay,' says the Lord (Deuteronomy 32:35; Romans 12:19). Vengeance is mine! Don't you try it; don't you attempt it. Don't try to 'get even,' because if you do, you'll only make the matter worse. You will perpetuate a feud that may go on for years, even for centuries, destroying, wrecking, damaging others, and creating all kinds of difficulties both for them and for you. No, vengeance is mine, says the Lord. I am the only one who has the wisdom adequate to handle this kind of a problem. The psalmist recognizes that and commits the cause to God.
But he also understands that God's name is involved in all this. When God's people are being persecuted, then God is also being persecuted. It is up to God to defend His name, not people. Recall that when Saul of Tarsus was converted on the Damascus road and the Lord Jesus appeared to Him that Saul cried out to Him and said, Lord, who are you?Jesus said, I am Jesus whom you are persecuting. Saul was persecuting the Christians, but when he was persecuting them, he was also persecuting the Lord. God is involved in His people's trials. God is involved in what happens to His own. The psalmist, understanding this, commits the whole cause to God and says, God, you deal with it. It is Your problem. Your name is involved; you handle it on my behalf for Your name's sake. Is that not a thoroughly Christian reaction?
Father, forgive me for striking back when I have been falsely accused. Help me to commit my cause to You, trusting that You know how to work these things out.
Life Application: When we are feeling attacked, hurt and unjustly treated what kind of vengeance can we absolutely count on? Where should our attitude and thoughts be focused?
We hope you were blessed by this daily devotion.

Christian Testimony

You shall not go about as a talebearer among your people; nor shall you take a stand against the life of your neighbor: I am the Lord.
Leviticus 19:16

It is terrible when Christians gossip and talk about their family members. Sometimes, they do not even see each other, because they have cut each other off. That is not true Christianity. As children of God, as Christians, we should go out of our way for our family, for our friends and for strangers.

As followers of Christ we should act in all lowliness, which is humility, gentleness, meekness and patience, because we are trying to bear ourselves in the love of Christ. Why? Love suffers long, and the love of Christ is truly longsuffering.

Read 1 Corinthians 13. Paul taught about God’s love. Love does not point fingers, love does not accuse, love does not judge, love forgives and forgets, but we do not do that; we keep a little record. It is terrible, but it happens in the body of Christ, in the church. It is so sad when you see this, because the children see how their Christian family is acting and they turn away from God.

When we gossip about people, it does not only affect our families; it affects every person we come into contact with. Eventually, our actions push people away from Jesus Christ, instead of drawing them to Him, and we will be held accountable for their souls.

As God’s children, we have to be careful we are not offending. We should be building people up, forgiving and restoring. That is the love and grace of God. That is the testimony of a person who follows Christ.

Christian love is not the victim of our emotions but the servant of our will.

I love those who love me, and those who seek me early and diligently shall find me.
—Proverbs 8:17
Our motives are misplaced if we think we read the Bible and pray to please God, or to keep from making Him mad at us.
God once told me, “You think, when you read the Bible, that you are making Me happy. I am going to be happy whether you read it or not. No, Joyce, if you read the Bible, you’re happy. If you pray, you’re happy. If you give, you receive.”
Every single thing that God tells us to do, He tells us to do so to bless ourselves. He doesn’t ask us to devote ourselves to study and prayer for Him; it is for us.
The good life is our choice.
