The Smiling Unborn Child~Chuck Colson

  • The Smiling Unborn Child

  • By Chuck Colson

In 1984, a video called The Silent Scream helped change the way people think about the unborn child. The footage of an actual abortion and the fetus’s reaction reminded us that abortion involves the death of a real person.

A recent bit of footage has similar potential, only it couldn’t be more different from The Silent Scream.

The footage was part of a recent PBS special, The Music Instinct: Science & Song. The program was an exploration of, among other things, music’s “biological, emotional and psychological impact on humans.”

Part of this “exploration” included how music affects babies. If we are, as some scientists believe, “wired for music,” then babies are ideal test subjects since their reactions are, by definition, instinctual.

Part of this research involved the effect of music on fetuses. While we knew that mothers often sing to their unborn children, we weren’t sure that the unborn child could hear them.

We are now. A segment of The Music Instinct featured Sheila C. Woodward of the University of Southern California, who has studied fetal responses to music. A camera and a microphone designed for underwater use were inserted into the uterus of a pregnant woman. And then Woodward sang.

The hydrophone picked up two sounds: the “whooshing” of the uterine artery and the unmistakable sound of a woman singing a lullaby.

Then something extraordinary happened. Upon hearing the woman’s voice, the unborn child smiled.

It was one of those moments that makes you catch your breath. The full humanity of the fetus could not have been clearer if he had turned to the camera and winked.

Apparently, fetal responses to music aren’t limited to smiling. They have been observed moving their hands in response to music, almost as if conducting. They have been soothed by Vivaldi and disturbed by loud tracks from Beethoven. They have even responded “rhythmically to rhythms tapped on [their] mother’s belly.”

Perhaps understandably, the connection between fetal responses to music and abortion weren’t mentioned in the show. What is not so understandable is that the program’s website contains no mention of Woodward and her findings. It’s as if someone realized the implications and hoped nobody would notice.

I don’t think that there’s some kind of conspiracy afoot. I just think that the PBS people’s worldview won’t allow them to make the obvious connection. Abortion on demand is only possible if people minimize the similarities between the fetus and us.

That kind of denial is hard work because what we have learned in the past 25 years makes any denial of the fetus’ humanity absurd. So instead of looking at the evidence, many people don’t see it. Call it “worldview-induced blindness.”

In other words, they have eyes but cannot see, ears but cannot hear.

Humans, we are told, are a “musical species” whose brain devotes more to the appreciation of music than even the processing of language. That makes someone who smiles and moves his hands in response to music undeniably human, whether we notice it or not.

Angels versus Lions

"My God sent His angel and shut the lions' mouths."
--Daniel 6:22

One of the best-known and most-loved stories of the Bible is that of Daniel in the lion's den, a story of angelic intervention in the life of one of God's most faithful servants.

Because of Daniel's faithfulness to the Lord and his honesty and integrity, he was second in command of the kingdom. The other government officials were very jealous of Daniel and set a trap for him.

They knew that Daniel went into his room three times a day to pray, so they persuaded King Darius to enact a law banning the worship of anyone but the king. The king was legally required to punish Daniel for continuing to pray to his God, so he reluctantly threw Daniel into the lion's den.

The king didn't sleep well at all that night, and early the next morning, he went to see if Daniel had survived. When the king came to the den of the lions, he found the secret to Daniel's deliverance: God had sent an angel to save Daniel's life.

The king spoke, saying to Daniel, "Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to deliver you from the lions?" Then Daniel said to the king, "O king, live forever! My God sent His angel and shut the lions' mouths, so that they have not hurt me. . . ." (Daniel 6:20--22)

God saw the dilemma of His servant and dispatched an angel to deliver him. We may not face a den full of lions, but we can know that angels sent by our living, loving God are watching out for us.

Jesus came for everybody~David McGee

Romans 15:8-9

"Now I say that Jesus Christ has become a servant to the circumcision for the truth of God, to confirm the promises made to the fathers, and that the Gentiles might glorify God for His mercy, as it is written: 'For this reason I will confess to You among the Gentiles, And sing to Your name.'"
NKJV

Life Lesson

Jesus came for everybody.

It is good to be reminded that Jesus came for everybody. The next-door neighbor who mows his lawn at 6am; Jesus came for him. The drug dealer on the street corner; Jesus came for her. The murderer, the newborn baby, the single mother and the person who cut you off in traffic; Jesus came for all of them. Jesus came for the Jew and He came for the Gentile. Don't be selfish. Treat others like you would treat Jesus.

Matthew 25:40 "And the King will tell them, 'I assure you, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!'" NLT

So, now let's make it more personal because, friend, Jesus came for you. Do you realize that? It doesn't matter where you've been or who you've been because Jesus knows who you are and He loved you so much that He died for you. God has invested an eternity in you... All of history is leading up to this moment where you realize that forgiveness is just one prayer away.

Romans 10:13 "Anyone who calls upon the name of the Lord will be saved." TLB

It's not an exclusive offer. You are in if you ask to be...it's that simple. All you have to do is ask. Why don't you take that moment right now? If you would like to ask Jesus to be your Lord and Savior (or if you have wandered, off and want to come back), please pray something like this...

Dear Jesus,
Thank You for loving me. Thank You for dying on the cross for my sins, rising again from the dead and breaking the bonds of sin over me. I have sinned. Please forgive me. Please give me the ability to live for You all the days of my life. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Living to tell what He died to say,
Pastor David

I will build My church.~Bob Hoekstra

More on the Lord Promising to Build His Church

"I will build My church." (Matthew 16:18)

This promise has monumental implications for every follower of Jesus Christ. "I will build My church." Each of the five words in this brief declaration reveals an essential truth of Christian life and service.

First, this promise discloses who will build the church. "I [Jesus]will build My church." Jesus is the builder of the church, not man. He wants to use us in the process, but He is the builder. Paul understood this arrangement. "According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation" (1 Corinthians 3:10). By the grace of God, Paul served the Lord. As he went about proclaiming Christ, the Lord was using him to lay the foundation (Christ) in lives that were being saved and individual churches that were being started.

Second, Jesus' promise reveals the certainty of His church being built. "I will [assuredly] build My church." There is no room for doubt. Jesus will do what He is promising. The only question for us is whether or not we will be available as a part of this wondrous process. The Lord wants to make us usable for His work: "sanctified and useful for the Master, prepared for every good work" (2 Timothy 2:21).

Third, this promise indicates the manner in which the Lord wants to work. "I will build [construct] My church." As with any construction project, there are both the quantitative and qualitative aspects. The Lord saves souls, adding them to His church in a quantitative increase. "And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved" (Acts 2:47). The Lord also enriches those He saves, bringing to His church qualitative development. "And with great power the apostles gave witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And great grace was upon them all" (Acts 4:33).

Fourth, His promise settles the issue of ownership. "I will build My [Jesus'] church." The church does not belong to the Pastor, the Church Board, or the District Office. It is Jesus' church. He paid the price to redeem us: "the church of God which He purchased with His own blood" (Acts 20:28).

Fifth, this promise specifies exactly what Jesus is going to build. "I will build My church [His people]." The church is not a building. This word (church) literally speaks of "a called-out people." "But you are…His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; who once were not a people but are now the people of God" (1 Peter 2:9-10).

Dear Lord Jesus, I honor You as the builder of the church. I rest in the certainty of Your task being accomplished, both quantitatively and qualitatively. I see that the church, Your redeemed people, belongs to You. Also, I humbly ask that You equip me and use me as You fulfill this grand promise, Amen.

Don’t be yoked with unbelievers~Jon Courson

July 13

Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.

2 Corinthians 6:17
Jesus was the Friend of sinners (Luke 7:34). But the important thing to note is that wherever Jesus went, sinners were permanently and radically impacted by Him. Therefore, when you walk into places where worldly stuff is going on, if people start turning to God and repenting from their sin, go for it! If you’re truly impacting the place you’re in — excellent! But if the place is impacting you, causing your own spirit to sag, get out. Pull away. Back off immediately.

‘Oh, but I’m mature in the Lord,’ you say. ‘So it’s OK for me to go into this business venture even though my partners are unbelievers.’

Is it really? I refer you to what happened to one of the greatest men of history …

Jehoshaphat was a uniquely blessed man. Revival broke out around him; blessings flowed from him; good things came to him. And then, as his life is coming to an end, there’s a P.S. in his story …

And after this did Jehoshaphat king of Judah join himself with Ahaziah king of Israel who did very wickedly: And he joined himself with him to make ships to go to Tarshish … 2 Chronicles 20:35-36

A godly Jehoshaphat joined with an ungodly Ahaziah in the shipping business. But the venture sank.

You might have walked with the Lord for 30 or 40 years or more. Don’t be like Jehoshaphat, saying, ‘This might not be God’s best for me — but I know my ship will come in eventually.’ A person might become rich financially by joining with an unbeliever, but what does it profit him if he gain the whole world and lose his soul (Mark 8:36)? What good is it if it causes him to be only a shell of what he once was spiritually?

What’s your legacy, dad? At one time, you were about the things of the Kingdom; you were a servant, a leader, a worker. But now you’re known as a business whiz. How tragic. Don’t be yoked with unbelievers in any endeavor which will cause you to be sunk spiritually.

Messianic Praise~Baron Eickhoff

Messianic Praise

Well, I've written a Messianic praise song. I hope the kids and teens enjoy it this Sunday! We began our weekly Messianic Praise procession yesterday at church and it was great celebrating the Lord as about fifteen or twenty kids from pre-school to teen (and a few adults) proceeded through the sanctuary waving Jehovah banners and streamers as we sang All the Earth will Sing His Praises and Days of Elijah. If you didn't get opportunity to join in, come this Sunday about 9:40 a.m. and get a banner or streamer! Or, just come at 10:00 a.m. and join us as we celebrate Adonai (a-done-eye).

We had several new families visit with us, and hopefully they will become part of the new thing God is doing among us here at Calvary Chapel Space Coast. God is being glorified in so many things here.

As we speak the word of God, as we minister in the name of God, we find God being glorified in all things in our lives.

If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God. If anyone ministers, let him do it as with the ability which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.
(1Pe 4:11)

My prayer for each of you is that you find God being glorified in all facets of your life as you speak His word, and as you live out His word by ministering to your family, church family, and the other people God has put in your life.

And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.
(Gal 6:9-10)

Yours in Him,
Pastor B.
