Courage Under Fire ~ Raul Ries

Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them;
for the LORD your God, He is the One who goes with you.
He will not leave you nor forsake you.”
Deuteronomy 31:6

Dave Howard, in his book, By the Power of the Holy Spirit, tells this story of a courageous pastor:

“Luperico Taba was a fearless pastor in Colombia. One Sunday he was preaching from his pulpit when a man appeared at a side window of the church, aimed a pistol at Luperico and ordered him to stop preaching. The congregation, seeing the danger, dove to the floor, and hid under the pews. Luperico, however, never flinched. He went right on preaching the gospel. The man fired four shots at him. Two shots went past his head, one on one side, one on the other, and lodged on the wall behind him. Two shots went past his body, one under his arm, one under the other, and also lodged in the wall. The would-be assassin then dropped his gun, and fled. Luperico, still unmoved, continued his sermon.”

Courage is choosing to do right in the midst of wrong.

Paul and Companions Head for Galatia ~ WOW the Bible in 7 minutes a day

Paul and Companions Head for Galatia

Acts 13:1-43; Psalm 118:22-26; Proverbs 21:1

Now in the church that was at Antioch there were certain prophets and teachers: Barnabas, Simeon who was called Niger, Lucius of Cyrene, Manaen who had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. As they ministered to the Lord and fasted, the Holy Spirit said, "Now separate to Me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them." Then, having fasted and prayed, and laid hands on them, they sent them away.

So, being sent out by the Holy Spirit, they went down to Seleucia, and from there they sailed to Cyprus. And when they arrived in Salamis, they preached the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews. They also had John as their assistant.

Now when they had gone through the island to Paphos, they found a certain sorcerer, a false prophet, a Jew whose name was Bar-Jesus, who was with the proconsul, Sergius Paulus, an intelligent man. This man called for Barnabas and Saul and sought to hear the word of God. But Elymas the sorcerer (for so his name is translated) withstood them, seeking to turn the proconsul away from the faith. Then Saul, who also is called Paul, filled with the Holy Spirit, looked intently at him and said, "O full of all deceit and all fraud, you son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, will you not cease perverting the straight ways of the Lord? And now, indeed, the hand of the Lord is upon you, and you shall be blind, not seeing the sun for a time."

And immediately a dark mist fell on him, and he went around seeking someone to lead him by the hand. Then the proconsul believed, when he saw what had been done, being astonished at the teaching of the Lord.

Now when Paul and his party set sail from Paphos, they came to Perga in Pamphylia; and John, departing from them, returned to Jerusalem. But when they departed from Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia, and went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day and sat down. And after the reading of the Law and the Prophets, the rulers of the synagogue sent to them, saying, "Men and brethren, if you have any word of exhortation for the people, say on."

Then Paul stood up, and motioning with his hand said, "Men of Israel, and you who fear God, listen: The God of this people Israel chose our fathers, and exalted the people when they dwelt as strangers in the land of Egypt, and with an uplifted arm He brought them out of it. Now for a time of about forty years He put up with their ways in the wilderness. And when He had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, He distributed their land to them by allotment.

"After that He gave them judges for about four hundred and fifty years, until Samuel the prophet. And afterward they asked for a king; so God gave them Saul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years. And when He had removed him, He raised up for them David as king, to whom also He gave testimony and said, 'I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart, who will do all My will.' From this man's seed, according to the promise, God raised up for Israel a Savior-Jesus-after John had first preached, before His coming, the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel. And as John was finishing his course, he said, 'Who do you think I am? I am not He. But behold, there comes One after me, the sandals of whose feet I am not worthy to loose.'

"Men and brethren, sons of the family of Abraham, and those among you who fear God, to you the word of this salvation has been sent. For those who dwell in Jerusalem, and their rulers, because they did not know Him, nor even the voices of the Prophets which are read every Sabbath, have fulfilled them in condemning Him. And though they found no cause for death in Him, they asked Pilate that He should be put to death. Now when they had fulfilled all that was written concerning Him, they took Him down from the tree and laid Him in a tomb. But God raised Him from the dead. He was seen for many days by those who came up with Him from Galilee to Jerusalem, who are His witnesses to the people. And we declare to you glad tidings-that promise which was made to the fathers. God has fulfilled this for us their children, in that He has raised up Jesus. As it is also written in the second Psalm:

'You are My Son,
Today I have begotten You.'

And that He raised Him from the dead, no more to return to corruption, He has spoken thus:

I will give you the sure mercies of David.'
Therefore He also says in another Psalm:
'You will not allow Your Holy One to see corruption.'

"For David, after he had served his own generation by the will of God, fell asleep, was buried with his fathers, and saw corruption; but He whom God raised up saw no corruption. Therefore let it be known to you, brethren, that through this Man is preached to you the forgiveness of sins; and by Him everyone who believes is justified from all things from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses. Beware therefore, lest what has been spoken in the prophets come upon you:

'Behold, you despisers,
Marvel and perish!
For I work a work in your days,
A work which you will by no means believe,
Though one were to declare it to you.'"

So when the Jews went out of the synagogue, the Gentiles begged that these words might be preached to them the next Sabbath. Now when the congregation had broken up, many of the Jews and devout proselytes followed Paul and Barnabas, who, speaking to them, persuaded them to continue in the grace of God.

Acts 13:1-43

WORSHIP

The stone which the builders rejected
Has become the chief cornerstone.
This was the LORD's doing;
It is marvelous in our eyes.
This is the day the LORD has made;
We will rejoice and be glad in it.
Save now, I pray, O LORD;
O LORD, I pray, send now prosperity.
Blessed is he who comes in the name of the LORD!
We have blessed you from the house of the LORD.
Psalm 118:22-26

WISDOM

The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD,
Like the rivers of water;
He turns it wherever He wishes.
Proverbs 21:1

God always hears ~ Joyce Meyer

Pray at all times (on every occasion, in every season) in the Spirit, with all [manner of] prayer and entreaty.
— Ephesians 6:18

This important verse lets us know that we can pray anywhere at any time about anything and that we should be watchful to do so. If we believe and practice this scripture, it can be life-changing and certainly prayer-changing.

It seems even when we do think about some prayer concern, we almost always follow that thought with another type of wrong thinking: I need to remember to pray about this during my prayer time. Why don't we stop and pray right then? Because we have a mental stronghold in this area. We think we must be in a certain place, in a certain frame of mind, and in a certain position before we can pray.

It's no wonder we don't get much praying done. If the only time we can pray is when we are sitting still and doing absolutely nothing else, most of us certainly won't be praying without ceasing.

We should all set aside a time to spend with God when we are doing nothing else, and we should discipline ourselves to keep our appointments with Him. Yes, we should have these set-apart times, but in addition to that we should be exercising our privileges of prayer all day long. Our prayers can be verbal or silent, long or short, public or private—the important thing is that we pray!

He did it All. ~ Jon Courson

But with whom was he grieved forty years? was it not with them that had sinned, whose carcases fell in the wilderness? And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not? Hebrews 3:17-18

To whom did God say, ‘You shall not enter into the rest, the Promised Land, the abundance of milk and honey’? I would have thought it would have been to those who worshipped idols, to those who didn’t have morning devotions, to immoral men, or to those who didn’t offer sacrifices. Yet, in reality, the only thing which kept the children of Israel from the Promised Land was their lack of faith.

This is critically important theology, for the singular sin which kept them from blessing was simply thinking God’s promise was just too good to be true. Precious people, you can live the abundant, Spirit-filled, successful, exciting, thrilling Christian life if, instead of saying, ‘God can’t bless me because I haven’t been to Bible study,’ or, ‘I’ve been yelling at my husband,’ or, ‘I haven’t had morning devotions regularly,’ you say, ‘I’m a spiritual grasshopper, Lord. But if You want to bring me into this great land of blessing, I’ll gladly go in!’

The sin of Hebrews 3 is singular. It’s not fornication, as destructive as that sin may be. It’s not idolatry, as sad as that sin is. It’s just not believing how good God is.

Recently home from Bible School, Peter John shared with me how passionate he and his friends are about seeing their generation brought into the Kingdom. ‘So I get up early in the morning and pray and spend time in the Word. I do so good for about three or four days,’ he said. ‘But then I get tired. I sleep in. I miss my devotional time. And I don’t go to prayer meeting.’ With tears running down his cheeks, this football-playing son of mine said, ‘Dad, I want to do so well, and I’m not.’

‘Peter,’ I said, ‘when you learn the lesson which took me years and years to understand, you’ll be on your way. And that lesson is simply this: blessing, anointing, ministry, fruitfulness, and victory are not about you.

'It’s not about the work you do for the Lord; it’s about the work He did for you. It’s not about your prayer to the Lord; it’s about His intercession for you. It’s not about your faith in the Lord; it’s about His being faithful when you falter. It’s all about Him being the Hero, the Prayer Warrior, the Victor, the Friend, and the Faithful One.’

Walk this way.....~ Chuck Swindoll

Now here's a rhyme I'll never understand:

Pussy-cat, pussy-cat, where have you been?

I've been to London to look at the queen.

Pussy-cat, pussy-cat, what did you there?

I frightened a little mouse under the chair.

That little pussy-cat had the chance of her lifetime. All of London stretched out before her. Dozens of famous, time-worn scenes to drink in. Westminster Abbey. Trafalgar Square. The unsurpassable British Museum. She could have scurried up an old lamppost and watched the changing of the guards. Or slipped in the side entrance and enjoyed an evening with the London Philharmonic.

Not this cat! She was such a mouseaholic that she couldn't break with the monotonous routine even when she was on vacation.

That mouseaholic has a lot to say to all workaholics . . . and churchaholics, for that matter. Overcommitted, pushed, in a hurry, grim-faced, and determined, we plow through our responsibilities like a freight train under a full head of steam. What we lack in enthusiasm, we make up for in diligence.

We've been programmed to think that fatigue is next to godliness. That the more exhausted we are (and look!), the more spiritual we are and the more we earn God's smile of approval. We bury all thoughts of enjoying life . . . for we all know that committed, truly committed, Christians are those who work, work, work. Preferably, with great intensity. As a result, we have become a generation of people who worship our work, who work at our play, and who play at our worship.

Hold it! Who wrote that rule? Why have we bought that philosophy? What gave someone the right to declare such a statement?

I challenge you to support it from the Scriptures. Or to go back into the life (and lifestyle) of Jesus Christ and find a trace of corroborating evidence that He embraced such a theory. Some will be surprised to learn there is not one reference in the New Testament saying (or even implying) that Jesus intensely worked and labored in an occupation to the point of emotional exhaustion. No, but there are several times when we are told He deliberately took a break. He got away from the demands of the public and enjoyed periods of relaxation with His disciples. I'm not saying He rambled through His ministry in an aimless, halfhearted fashion. Not at all! But neither did He come anywhere near an ulcer. Never once do we find Him in a frenzy.

His was a life of beautiful balance. He accomplished everything the Father sent Him to do. Everything. And He did it without ignoring those essential times of leisure. If that is the way He lived, then it makes good sense for you and me to live that way, too.

Word alive! ~ David McGee

Acts 15:35

"Paul and Barnabas also remained in Antioch, teaching and preaching the word of the Lord, with many others also."
NKJV

Life Lesson

We should intimately know the Word of God.

A lot of effort is put forth so that people can know God. I agree wholeheartedly that we should introduce people to God. Everyone has a need to have a relationship with Him. When someone makes a decision to accept Jesus, they have made the greatest decision they will ever make. The work of salvation is then complete, but there is still much to do. You see, once someone gets to know the God of the Word, they need to get to know the Word of God. We place great importance and emphasis on the teaching of the Word of God here at Calvary Chapel. It is my joy and honor to walk you through the Word to help equip you to deal with life. I look forward to our walk together, and I am sure we will both learn many things. Take the time to read because he took the time to bleed. Get to know your Bible.

Dear Lord,
Thank You for the Bible. I realize many men and women have died that I might have a copy of it in my life. It truly is a treasure and a light to my path. Please help me to read it, dig into it, and spend my days going through the incredible riches of this supernatural book. Thank You God for writing Your love letter straight to me called the Bible. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Enoch continues his walk of faith~Bob Hoekstra

By faith Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death…for before he was taken he had this testimony, that he pleased God. But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. (Hebrews 11:5-6)

Before Enoch was taken to heaven, he walked with God in a manner that pleased the Lord. Enoch's faith in God is what was pleasing unto Him. "Before he was taken he had this testimony, that he pleased God. But without faith it is impossible to please Him." Pleasing God, as Enoch did, should be our desire.

Many people waste their lives by aiming to please themselves. Their lives are choked with self-indulgence. "And the ones that fell among thorns are those who, when they have heard, go out and are choked with cares, riches, and pleasures of life, and bring no fruit to maturity" (Luke 8:14). They have ignored the fact that pleasing self cannot lead to spiritual growth and Christlikeness. "We then who are strong ought to bear with the scruples of the weak, and not to please ourselves… For even Christ did not please Himself" (Romans 15:1, 3). Others live in carnal bondage to human opinions. Their consistent priority is to please people. This was part of King Saul's downfall. "Then Saul said to Samuel, 'I have sinned, for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD and your words, because I feared the people and obeyed their voice'" (1 Samuel 15:24). We cannot aim to please man and still serve God. "Do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a servant of Christ" (Galatians 1:10).

Living to please God is what we were created for. This can never happen apart from faith. "Without faith it is impossible to please Him." Coming to the Lord in true biblical faith begins with a conviction that God exists. "For he who comes to God must believe that He is." Additionally, God-pleasing faith eagerly anticipates the Lord's gracious response to all who truly seek Him. "He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him." Although there are many blessings that result from pursuing the Lord, the ultimate reward is God Himself. God told this to Abraham. "After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision, saying, 'Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward'" (Genesis 15:1).

Lord God Almighty, too often I have aimed at pleasing myself. At other times, my goal was to please people. Thank You for Your patience and forgiveness. Now, my heart desires to please You in all things. By faith, I know that You exist. By faith, I seek You, anticipating the grand reward of knowing You better and better, in Jesus' name, Amen.

Practical power ~ Greg Laurie

I understand why some people are, to some degree, averse to the gifts of the Spirit, because there has been so much abuse in this area.

Often, the people who claim to be using these gifts behave in rather strange ways. We look at this flamboyant excess and say, "Well, if those are the gifts of the Spirit, then I don't want anything to do with them."

In doing so, however, we can actually be guilty of the sin of omission, which is not doing what we ought to do. If God's Holy Spirit has instilled spiritual gifts in our lives, then it is our responsibility to discover and use them.

The Bible says, "Do not quench the Spirit" (1 Thessalonians 5:19 NKJV). To "quench" is to extinguish something, like throwing water on a campfire as you are preparing to break camp.

The sin of quenching the Holy Spirit is when God's Spirit is prompting us to say or do a certain thing and we refuse. Quenching the Spirit could also be failing to discover and use the gifts that God has given us.

So let's look at the gifts of the Spirit in a biblical and balanced way. I believe in the power and the gifts of the Holy Spirit. But I also believe that it is a practical power that God wants us to have—the same practical power that caused the early church to turn their world upside down.

Ephesians 4 tells us that God has given us the gifts of the Spirit "to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ" (verses 12–13 NIV).

The gifts of the Spirit are given for the perfecting, or the maturing, of the saints. God gives us these gifts, working through people like pastors and teachers so that believers are equipped.

We also have the gifts of the Spirit so that we might be equipped to do all God has called us to do in the church. God has given each of us a gift or gifts to utilize to bless others. The gifts of the Spirit are not a hobby to play with; they are tools to build with. And they are weapons to fight with.

God has given the gifts of the Spirit to bring unity in the church as well. Again, Ephesians 4:12–13 tells us that the purpose of these gifts is "to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ" (NIV).

As we use these gifts, we discover that no one person has all of them. God, in His sovereign will, has chosen to give certain gifts to certain people.

The gifts are given for the spiritual growth of Christians and the numeric growth of the church. God "makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love" (Ephesians 4:16 NLT).

When a church is grounded in God's Word and energized by the Holy Spirit, it will reach out, not satisfied with staying by itself. It will permeate, challenge, and confront culture.

Jesus said, "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth" (Acts 1:8 NIV). It is power with a purpose.

Some people get sidetracked with the gifts of the Spirit. But Christians should not follow signs and wonders; signs and wonders should follow them. The Christian life is one of faith.

As commentator A. B. Simpson wrote, "Once it was the blessing, now it is the Lord; once it was the feeling, now it is His Word. Once His gifts I wanted, now the Giver own; once I sought for healing, now Himself alone."

Allow God to pour out His Spirit and bring His gifts into your life when and where He chooses. And in the meantime, be preoccupied with following Him and maturing in your faith.

Sword of the Spirit ~ Mark Balmer

Based on “Under HIS Influence – Mission Possible” by Pastor Mark Balmer; 10/17-18/09,

Message #MB393; Daily Devotional #5 - “Sword of the Spirit”

Preparing the Soil (Introduction): Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:18-20).

Planting and Watering the Seed (Growth): As Christ followers, we are called to do great things for God. We are blessed to do this work. And we must always keep in mind that life is not a playground, but a battlefield. Quite often, the battle is fought in our minds. Yes, Satan will use deceit and deception in attempts to have us stray away from God. On a daily basis, Satan attempts to lead us down a wrong path, ultimately away from God. He is very clever in his attempts to convince us not to follow and walk with God. We need to examine our thought life on a daily basis and see whether we are listening to Satan or to God. Satan has many tricks up his sleeve. “It would be nice to serve as a greeter, but you have too many things on your plate; just start next month.” “Of course you have to worry about finances—who wouldn’t?” “Yes, you shouldn’t gossip about your co-worker, but he really is horrible. Everybody will understand why you gossip.” “Your brother is a lost cause. There is no way he will ever know God. Forget about him.” These are only a few examples of lies from the enemy. We must remain vigilant and aware of the devil’s schemes. Also, we must always remember that God is more powerful than Satan. Satan has no power over us, and we can always trust God and His Word. We can boldly and confidently accomplish God’s work because of the strength He freely provides. Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. (Ephesians 6:10-11). A main way to fight the good fight is by hanging on to the Word of God, the Holy Bible. It is impossible to do life God’s way without His Word. We must read His Word every day. It is part of our armor of God! Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. (Ephesians 6:17). We can stand strong and victorious when we hear and obey God’s Word. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. (Ephesians 6:12)

Harvesting the Crop (Action/Response): Yes, as Christ followers we want to go out into the world and spread the Good News. We want to make disciples of all the nations. Yet we can only do this through the power of God. We cannot do it in our own power. We must hold onto God’s Word tightly. We must arm ourselves with God’s truths, promises, and commands. This cannot be accomplished without reading His Word. We must read His Word every day. We must meditate on His Word. We must get His Word into our hearts. This way, when the devil launches his attacks we will be prepared and will triumph through the power of Jesus Christ. Only by the power of the Holy Spirit can we go out and live a life for God. This must include being in the Word of God each and every day.

Free From Guilt ~ Charles Stanley

1 Peter 2:22-25

Guilt can be defined as anxiety in one’s spirit over a deliberate, willful sin. We can trace this emotion all the way back to the garden of Eden. After Adam and Eve tasted the forbidden fruit, they felt ashamed of their nakedness and hid themselves.

During Old Testament times, people would bring a special offering to the temple in order to “pay” for their wrong. Today, we have no such tangible way to release our guilt

Actually, we have something better.

The heavenly Father sent His Son Jesus—who was fully God as well as fully man—to live a sinless life. He took upon Himself the penalty for all of our wrongs by dying a criminal’s death: crucifixion. Praise God, Jesus rose to life again, conquering death and sin. Ephesians 1:7 states, “In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace.”

The truth is, every one of us has sinned and therefore deserves to be separated from God (Rom. 3:23). However, we can be liberated from death and guilt by accepting Jesus’ free gift and committing our life to Him. Of course, in our imperfect human state, we will continue to sin. But our loving heavenly Father will continue to forgive His children (Luke 11:3-4).

Jesus’ sacrifice gives us freedom from shame and death—plus the promise of eternity with God. But that in no way means we have license to sin knowingly. Though we are promised forgiveness, our gratitude and love for our Savior should spur us on to obey and serve the Lord.

Eternal flame ~ Bob Coy

"And it shall come to pass afterward that I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions. . . . I will pour out My Spirit in those days."-Joel 2:28-29 (NKJV)

The prophecy above was delivered by the prophet Joel sometime around 800 B.C. It's a prophecy packed with a promise that was almost unthinkable at the time: God would pour out His Spirit on all flesh-men and women, young and old.

This was amazing because up until that time, God's Spirit only had come upon certain people for certain situations, such as Moses' elders (Numbers 11:25) and Samson (Judges 14:19). It had been like that for many centuries until God's Spirit was poured out upon the early church:

Suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. (Acts 2:2-4 NKJV)

Bystanders couldn't figure out what was happening, and assumed that the first disciples were drunk. Peter stood up and set the record straight:

"But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: ‘And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, that I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your young men shall see visions, your old men shall dream dreams. . . . I will pour out My Spirit in those days . . . .'" (Acts 2:16-18 NKJV)

Joel's prophecy had been fulfilled and continues to be fulfilled as we who comprise the Christian Church are filled with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5:18). True to His Word, God has poured out His Spirit on all flesh-men and women, young and old, Jew and Gentile. Anyone from anywhere can experience the blessing of God's Spirit if he or she is in Christ (Galatians 3:28).

Discuss with the group what it means to be filled with the Spirit. Share how you have experienced the Holy Spirit’s presence in your own life. How has He poured Himself into your life?

Dig into Joel 2:28–29 and Acts 2:16–18. What was the purpose of God pouring out His Spirit on His children? Why do you think this happened the way in which it did? How did this fulfillment and filling change everything for the followers of Christ?

Decide as a group to read Pastor Bob’s book The Holy Spirit. Study on your own as you read through it, and then share with the group what you learn about the Spirit’s message and ministry to believers. (Books are available at www.ActiveWord.org.)

Life In The Spirit-part twelve

Led By The Spirit!

Wouldn’t it be absolutely awesome to not have to make decisions on your own, but to be able to come to God and say God, this is Your day, You created it, You created me, now God, I don’t know what you want me to do, I don’t know what You want me to say, I don’t know the experiences that I’m going to encounter, but God, I’m asking You to lead me by Your Spirit? That’s life in the Spirit.

Are you ready Beloved? Beloved of God, do you know that’s what you are? If you are a child of God, you are beloved by Him and you always will be. You’re precious in His sight and that’s what the scripture has to say, not just me. And if you ever go through the epistles and you read what Peter and Paul and others have written, you will see Him saying beloved because you are beloved to God. And God wants you to know truth, because you are beloved of Him, God wants to lead you.

Now, as we were looking at Romans, chapter 8 we were looking at the contrast between those that walk according to the flesh and those that walk according to the Spirit, those that have the life of God inside of them. And we saw the contrast. And we came down to a verse that I do not want you to miss. So we’re going to start today’s study in Romans, chapter 8, and we’re marking every reference to the Holy Spirit.

Now in verse 14 it says, “For all who are being…,” and I love this, “…led by the Spirit, are the children of God.” So if you are being led by the Spirit then you are a son of God, you are a daughter of God, you are a child of God. Why? Because God moves inside of you. And He doesn’t move inside of you to sit down, lean back, relax and just say go for it. He’s there to move into the control, so to speak, of your life and say hey, you sit over here; let Me sit in the drivers seat. And as I sit in the drivers seat I will lead you. You can start every single day with Me and I will lead you. You may not know that I’m leading you, but I will lead you.

I want to tell you a story because it’s exciting to me. Years ago, I had a gal that got saved when I was going to Atlanta and teaching this class in the home of Grace Kinser. And I would drive from Chattanooga to Atlanta, Georgia, which was about two hours away, a little bit over that until the freeway got put in, and we did this for seven years. And in Atlanta, many, many women in that class came to know the Lord Jesus Christ. And among them was a woman by the name of Norma Derosit. She had Indian blood, high cheekbones. She was just absolutely gorgeous. She was a red head; she was a knock out. She came, she got saved. She started growing under the ministry. And then her husband got transferred to, to California. And so when he got transferred, she wanted me to come out and see her because she had gone into Hollywood and she had all these gals that were doing this study with her. And so I said okay, I’ll come. But I got on a plane and I flew to California and we just have a good time together anyway, and I got to go to the class and I got to meet the girls and talk to them.

Well a friend of mine who was running Campus Crusade’s International School of Theology had heard that I was coming and so he called and he said while you’re out here could you come down to the school and could you speak at chapel and could you do a luncheon for the wives at the school and talk to them there? And so I said yes.

I remember on the way out, before I left, I scratched my eye and I was in horrendous, horrendous pain. I could hardly bear to move. I had to put a patch on my eye because any movement of that eye, you know, looking would just absolutely bring excruciating pain. So I show up and I’m in this patch and everything, and I’m teaching in chapel and then go to the luncheon and I’m speaking.

Now I asked God, “God, what do You want me to speak on? What do You want me to say, because after all, I’ve got the Spirit inside of me now. He’s in the drivers seat. And so I want to be led by the Spirit.” And I can expect that because that’s in the job description of a Christian. That is one of the benefits of Christianity, of Christ in you, is that the Holy Spirit can lead you. The Holy Spirit can direct you, so that you can commit your way unto God and trust in Him and know that God will bring it to pass because He delights to lead you. So I asked for the message; He gave me the message. I asked you know, that He would put it all together and He gave me an incredible illustration. And it was an illustration that came from Romania. It was an illustration from the life of Richard Wormbrandt, who had been taken by the Communists and put in prison and treated so brutally that when he was let out of that prison he would never be able to wear another pair of shoes. So I give this illustration. It’s a shattering illustration. And when I finish, I mean everybody’s just.. their eyes are popping open, their mouth is hanging open and many just sit there and weep. I gave that illustration; I closed the message. And afterwards this woman walks up to me and she said you know what you said about Romania, and she said this in a broken English, you know what you said about Romania is true. And she said but these women don’t believe you. And I said well how do you know that it’s true? And she says because I’m from Romania. And she told me later that I grabbed her, I put my arms around her and I said bless your heart. And she thought nobody has ever blessed my heart before because I’m from Romania. But you see Romania was on my heart because the Spirit of God had moved on my heart on behalf of Romania and I wanted to go to Romania. And I wanted to teach them how to study the Word of God.

Now let me just show you how the Holy Spirit leads. When I went down to that school I thought O Lord, if only these people would take one of these Precept courses and study, they would learn how to study inductively, discover truth for themselves and then they would have a tool that they could teach others through that book of the Bible. And I thought O that is just a marvelous idea. And so I took my Precept books. I laid them all out on the table. And as I laid them out on the table and went to eat lunch I didn’t know that this Romanian woman had walked around that table, had picked up those books and had looked at them and said to God, “God, I want one of those books and You know that I don’t have any money. Would you please tell that woman to give me one of those books?” I knew nothing of this prayer, nothing whatsoever. I’m standing here hugging this Romanian woman, saying bless your heart and all of a sudden, now listen, out of my mouth is coming this concept. I mean it’s amazing me too. I said “Oh, Oh! I said you know I want to go to Romania. My board won’t let me go to Romania. They’re afraid that I’m going to be put in prison, but you know what? You could go for me. You know what you could do is you could take the Precept books that I’ve written. Here, let me give them to you.” And I gave her every book that was on that table. He’s the God of the exceedingly abundant of all that we ask and pray for. And I said, “Here, take these books and you can translate them and you can go to Romania and that’s even better because I don’t know the language and you know the language. I don’t know the culture or the customs; you know that because you’re from Romania.” I said, “Now we don’t have any money but if you can get to Chattanooga, Tennessee we can take you through the training. As a matter of fact, this summer we have a two-week training program coming up and you can just fly out here. We will feed you. We will house you. We will take care of you and it won’t cost you anything, just a plane ticket.”

All of a sudden what is happening? What is happening? Well you know what’s happening by the end result of it. I was being led by the Spirit. I wasn’t cognizant of this voice in my ear saying now, pick up the books, now hand her the books. All right, now explain to her. Nothing like that. I had committed my way unto Him. And because the Spirit was there and because it’s His job to lead me and to guide me and to direct me, because this is what it says: “For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are the sons of God.” This is life in the Spirit. This is Christianity 101. I mean this is what it’s all about.

Well, do you know what happened? They didn’t have the money either, but she didn’t tell me; she just prayed. And so when the time came I said can you get the plane tickets? And she said no, God has not provided. Well my friend, Norma and her husband said hey, we’ll buy the tickets. That day, when that couple gave that money for two plane tickets to fly from California to Chattanooga, Tennessee, they made an investment that was absolutely phenomenal, the returns, the dividends that have come from that investment. Because by them buying the tickets for the people to come here and the people’s names are Mia and Costel, they opened the door for us to reach Eurasia. I mean there are thousands of classes going on now. And through that couple, Mia and Costel, we now minister in many, many countries, including Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iran. Isn’t it incredible? Life in the Spirit, this is what it’s all about. And God wants you to understand that. And God wants to do exciting things through you. Not by might, not by power, but by His Spirit.

Welcome back. Isn’t it exciting to hear stories like that? I just, O, let me just tell you one more quick story about Mia and Costel and being led by the Spirit, because the Spirit even leads you in prayer. Mia and Costel grew up under Communism. They grew up under the reign of Checheklov. He was a terrible, terrible man. I mean sick to the core. He had an incredible, incredible palace while these people were so hungry and just absolutely dirt poor. He had a system of the secret police whereby houses were bugged. You couldn’t say anything without them knowing. Or if the house wasn’t bugged, there were spies in every single apartment building. They were ugly, ugly concrete buildings that; he tore down these beautiful homes and put them just like masses in these concrete towers. And so a spy always lived there. But Mia and Costel and a group of other young people at that time, prayed fervently. They would pray at a certain time every morning, led by the Spirit asking God, “God, put the gospel over the radio. Put the gospel on television. Let Your good news be broadcast across this country.” And they thought O, there’s no way that that could ever happen, but they were led by the Spirit to pray.

The Spirit helps our weakness and we don’t know how to pray, as we ought. But the Spirit who knows the mind and heart of God intercedes through us. And the mind and heart of God was that someday the gospel would be preached across Romania on the radio and on television. Now, do you know what happens in that world communications center here at Precept Ministries? Mia and Costel both are broadcasting on radio and on television in Romania. This is life in the Spirit.

So we are led by the Spirit of God. The Spirit helps our weakness. And then you say okay, well explain this to me. How can I know that I am being led by the Spirit? How does that happen? Well, God tells us. And I want us to go to Ephesians, chapter 5. Now Ephesians has a lot to say about being in Christ. Ephesians has a lot to say about spiritual warfare, because when you’re in Christ, you’re in warfare with the enemy because you’re no longer under his dominion, but you’ve come out and now you belong to Christ and so there’s a conflict there.

Well, in Ephesians, chapter 5 he wants them to understand where their power is. And so he comes down and he says in verse 15 of Ephesians 5: “Be careful, therefore, be careful how you walk, not as unwise men…,” not as duh, you know, not knowing what’s going on, “… but as wise.” Now we’re going to look in our next program at how we get wise. How do we get the wisdom of God? But right now he says, “Be careful how you walk, not as unwise men, but as wise, making the most of your time.”

Now I love the King James Version because it says redeeming the time and it means this: that you see that you have this many hours in the day and this many waking hours and so what you’re gonna do is you’re gonna take those hours and you’re gonna buy them back. You’re not gonna fritter them away and you’re going to use them for eternal purposes. So he says making the most of your time, redeeming your time. Why? Because the days are evil. You’re in a conflict. There are two classes of people in this world, those that know Christ and those that do not know Christ. They’re saved and they are lost and there’s a conflict between the two. One belongs to God, the other belongs to the kingdom of darkness and never will the twain meet. Only God takes them out of the kingdom of darkness and brings them into His own kingdom. So he says, “… making the most of your time because the days are evil. So then do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.

Now what is the will of the Lord? Well, first of all, do not get drunk with wine….” In other words, don’t get intoxicated. Because when you’re intoxicated you don’t know what you’re doing, you don’t know what you’re doing because you’re; you’re governed by that wine. You don’t have your act together and you can’t even talk straight. Right? Right, you can’t talk straight. I’ve never been drunk in my life. But I can tell you this, I’ve watched a lot of drunks and as a nurse, I’ve worked with a lot of drunks. He says, “Don’t be drunk with wine, for that is dissipation.” It’s nothing, it’s just frittering everything away. “But be filled with the Spirit.”
Hey, you have God inside of you; you have the Spirit inside of you. Now what I want you to do is I want you to be totally filled with the Holy Spirit. Why and how? Well, the Holy Spirit is inside of you. To be filled with the Holy Spirit is to let the Holy Spirit have total control of your being, to let the Holy Spirit take over, to be led by the Spirit. So he says, “Be filled with the Spirit.” It’s a command. It’s in the imperative mood. And so that is a command. It is in the middle voice and that means that the subject participates in the action of the verb and it’s in the present tense. And the present tense means keep on being filled with the Holy Spirit. So here’s a command from God. You wanna be led by God, you wanna be used by God, you wanna know that your life is counting for something, you want to redeem the time, then what you do is you let the Holy Spirit fill you.

In other words He’s there; don’t quench Him. Don’t grieve Him. Don’t suppress Him, but instead let Him have full and absolute and total control of you, Beloved of God. That’s what he’s saying. Now how do I know when I’m filled with the Holy Spirit? Well we’re going to look at it in more depth later, but right now let me just show you what Ephesians says. It says, “Be filled, keep on being filled with the Spirit…,” a habit of life, s”… speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.”

In other words, when you’re filled with the Holy Spirit, one of the nine-fold fruit of the Spirit is joy. So what’s happening is you are singing and you are making melody in your heart to the Lord. You know sometimes I’ll just be walking along and I can’t sing, but all of a sudden there’ll be song in my heart and I’ll think O God, thank You. It’s the Holy Spirit, He’s singing and He’s making melody in my heart. And then it goes on to say in verse 20, “… always giving thanks for all things.” Have you ever gotten something done on your computer and then lost it? It happened to me the other day. Everything that I had done for those hours was gone, absolutely gone. I knew that I was to give thanks always for all things. Did I want to be filled with the Holy Spirit? Yes. I simply said, “God, You said in everything give thanks and so God, I am giving thanks. I want to walk in the power of Your Holy Spirit.” Well then he goes on, “… always giving thanks for all things in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ to God, even the Father, and be subject to one another in the fear of the Lord.” When you are filled by the Spirit, when you are being led by the Spirit, you’re not saying it’s my way, I’m number one. Oh no, there is a mutual submission to one another. Why? You’re part of the body of Christ and you desire the highest good of another. Beloved, this is being led by the Spirit. This is what you want; this is life in the Spirit. Don’t miss the next program.

MORNING

I am cast out of thy sight; yet I will look again toward thy holy temple.

Zion said, The LORD hath forsaken me, and my Lord hath forgotten me. Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee.

I forgat prosperity. And I said, My strength and my hope is perished from the LORD. - Awake, why sleepest thou, O Lord? arise, cast us not off for ever. - Why sayest thou, O Jacob, and speakest, O Israel, My way is hid from the LORD, and my judgment is passed over from my God? - In a little wrath I hid my face from thee for a moment; but with everlasting kindness will I have mercy on thee, saith the LORD thy Redeemer.

Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted within me? hope in God: for I shall yet praise him, who is the health of my countenance. - We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed.

EVENING

When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue faileth for thirst, I the Lord will hear them.

There be many that say, Who will shew us any good? - What hath man of all his labour, and of the vexation of his heart, wherein he hath laboured under the sun? For all his days are sorrows, and his travail grief; yea, his heart taketh not rest in the night. All is vanity and vexation of spirit. - They have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water.

Him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out. - I will pour water upon him that is thirsty. - Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.

O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee: my soul thirsteth for thee, my flesh longeth for thee in a dry and thirsty land, where no water is.

Old Testament - Jeremiah 44:28 stood out to me in today's readings: ""Only a small number will escape death and return to Judah from Egypt." This verse reminds me that God is continuing to preserve the line - the house of David. God will destroy most of the Israelites in Egypt for their unfaithfulness & idol worship, but he will preserve a remnant! We see this over and over in the Bible - even Noah & the flood comes to mind, pre-David of course. Verses 29 and 30 in this chapter continues: "And this is the proof I give you, says the LORD, that all I have threatened will happen to you and that I will punish you here: I will turn Pharaoh Hophra, king of Egypt, over to his enemies who want to kill him, just as I turned King Zedekiah of Judah over to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon. I, the LORD, have spoken!" Based on these verses, below is an image of Pharaoh-Hophra taken prisoner in the war with Amasis:

Jeremiah 45 is a short chapter. Baruch is the person who has basically written this book of Jeremiah. He was Jeremiah's secretary and wrote down everything. However, apparently being secretary for a prophet is a high stress job too. Baruch is sounding a bit burdened in this chapter... To which God gives him words of comfort, along with a brief warning in verse 5 - "Are you seeking great things for yourself? Don't do it!" Are we seeking great things for ourselves? Should we do it.... ? Whom should we be seeking great things for? Why do we seek great things for our own selves? Why do we sometimes even walk over others to try to prove our "greatness".... ? Think God likes to see this type of behavior from us?

Pride

Jeremiah chapter 46 starts about 6 chapters of prophecies against various nations. Starting with Egypt in 46 and Philistine in 47 today. In chapter 46 verses 3 through 5 today we read: ""Buckle on your armor and advance into battle! Harness the horses, and prepare to mount them. Put on your helmets, sharpen your spears, and prepare your armor. But look! The Egyptian army flees in terror. The bravest of its fighting men run without a backward glance. They are terrorized at every turn, says the LORD."

New Testament - Second Timothy chapter 2 verse 22 is so very true: "Run from anything that stimulates youthful lust. " Notice that first word - Run. Flee. Go the other way. U-turn. Don't hang around. Run. Do you run from things that stimulate lust in your life? Do you really Run? How fast?

Run

Verse 22 continues on with some encouraging words - "Follow anything that makes you want to do right. Pursue faith and love and peace, and enjoy the companionship of those who call on the Lord with pure hearts." I like that - pursue faith. Pursue love. Pursue peace. And - "enjoy the companionship of those who call on the Lord with pure hearts." I do pray you have some relationships like this in your life? They can provide you such great rest and rejuvenation. A small group in your church may be a great way to find these types of relationships if you don't have them currently. Community can be messy & tough & scary at times - but it's so worth it! Please pursue community with other believers. And please do continue to have relationships with others who may not be believers in your life too. Be cautious in that sometimes those old relationships can bring us down or pull us back to old habits if we are not careful. That is why we most definitely need to have a community of those who call on the Lord in our lives as well. In community, let us pursue faith! Pursue love! Pursue peace! With pure hearts!

Christians

2 Timothy 3:1-5 are 5 powerful verses that deserve to be meditated upon by each of us: "You should also know this, Timothy, that in the last days there will be very difficult times. For people will love only themselves and their money. They will be boastful and proud, scoffing at God, disobedient to their parents, and ungrateful. They will consider nothing sacred. They will be unloving and unforgiving; they will slander others and have no self-control; they will be cruel and have no interest in what is good. They will betray their friends, be reckless, be puffed up with pride, and love pleasure rather than God. They will act as if they are religious, but they will reject the power that could make them godly. You must stay away from people like that." How do these teachings of Paul resonate with you? Do you see parallels in today's modern world with these teachings? Are there some people in your life today that you should literally stay away from?

Obnoxious

Okay, and then verses 16 and 17 just make One Year Bible bloggers like myself smile.... :) "All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It straightens us out and teaches us to do what is right. It is God's way of preparing us in every way, fully equipped for every good thing God wants us to do." Do you believe these verses to be true? Do you believe that Scripture is inspired by God? And useful to teach us what is true? And make us realize what is wrong in our lives? Is God's Word fully equipping you for every good thing God wants you to do?

2timothy_3_16

Psalms - Psalm 94 verse 14 is fantastic today - "The LORD will not reject his people; he will not abandon his own special possession." I love this thought - that God will not reject us. He will not abandon us. We are his own special possession. Do you believe that you are God's own special possession?

Masterpiece

Bible.org has a wonderful commentary on Psalm 94 titled "The Psalmist Speaks When Society Sins" at this link.

Proverbs - Proverbs 26 verse 7 is powerful for us to consider: "In the mouth of a fool, a proverb becomes as limp as a paralyzed leg." This makes me realize that sometimes the messenger can be as important as the message... If we are messengers in some sort of way for God - by how we live our lives, love others, serve others, etc. - how are we doing? Are we worthy messengers? Or are we diluting the message in some ways? Ultimately God's Word and message will proceed forward with or without us. But it's obviously such a blessing for us to be part of God's message - participating in God's process of redeeming the world. Let us pray we are good messengers for God in our lives today!

Messenger

Worship God: Today's readings, and really many of our recent days readings, are reminding me of Chris Tomlin's amazing song "Made to Worship." Related to this song, I heard a recent sermon by Dr. Tim Keller of Redeemer Presbyterian in New York City about how the first 2 of the Ten Commandments are so critical for us to fully understand and live out. God is God. Worship God. No false idols. If we really get this and really live it out, well then the rest of the 8 Commandments are a lot easier to actually keep. It's when we mess up on the first two commandments, and when we start worshiping created things rather than our Creator - well, that's when we very easily mess up on the other 8 commandments. If you're worshiping money more than God, then it's a lot easier to lie, cheat and steal! Put God back in his proper place - as your God. And worship God only. And, then, well, why lie, cheat or steal? You wouldn't want to do that while worshiping God. I hope this makes sense? It was stunning to me to really think about it while listening to Dr. Keller's sermon. And Chris in this video talks a bit before the song about how "you and I are made to worship. We're great worshipers!" And I agree with him on this. The question is that who or what are we worshiping? I do think all humans on the planet are great worshipers. However, we're not all worshiping God above all else... And that's where the problems come in! Apologies on this long set up to this video. :) You and I are made to worship God the Father, God the Son, Jesus, and God the Holy Spirit!
