August 27 O give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; for His mercy and loving-kindness endure forever! —Psalm 118:1 Thanking God for the bounty on your table is the best way I know to immediately bring yourself into a more healthy relationship with your food. If you have a tendency to overeat, ask God to help you at this meal to stay in His perfect will. God wants you to enjoy what you eat, and true enjoyment does not mean eating so much that you spend the next few hours feeling sick and guilty. Realize that this meal is not the last one you will ever eat. There will be plenty of other meals in your life so thank God, enjoy your food, make good choices, and stop as soon as you feel full. Another great trick for reminding yourself that food is about more than taste is to tell yourself that you are eating for two. Many women switch to healthier diets once they get pregnant. They may have been willing to shortchange themselves nutritionally, but not their babies! Well, you are also eating for two. Since your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, you can see how important it is to keep God's "vessel" healthy. You should keep yourself healthy so God can act through you in the world. Don't shortchange Him! |
