MikeMacIntosh: "Your spirit is able to communicate with God's Spirit like no other part of you

Today's Devotion

From Mike MacIntosh

But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God. These things we also speak, not in words which man's wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
1 Corinthians 2:10-13

Your spirit is able to communicate with God's Spirit like no other part of you. When you pray, your spirit is able to respond to the will of God, causing you to grow spiritually. Prayer allows your spirit to soar like an eagle high above the fir trees of the pristine Alaskan forest.

The apostle Paul had much to say to the early Christian community concerning the soul. He described how your soul reacts to God's promptings. Have you ever felt a tugging in your heart in response to a situation? Were you able to discern what you were feeling? Did you know what to do? In these moments, your spirit is struggling within you. Prayer allows you to hone discernment and sharpen your spirit's response.

In our passage today from 1 Corinthians 2, we see that we have two competing languages at work: a worldly language that confuses the soul, and a spiritual language that liberates the soul. Media advertisements would have you think that life is about "you." These ads emphasize how pleasing the product is to your eyes, how it will make you look to others, and how it can improve your lot in life. In reality, you will be "lost" without the Holy Spirit inhabiting and directing your thoughts, your prayer life, and your body.

James 2:26 says, "For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also." Why do we spend so much time pampering and protecting our bodies while filling our souls with sludge? Why do we do so little to strengthen our spirits? May God give us the strength through His Spirit to recognize the wonderful gifts that He has bestowed on us to live lives that are pleasing to Him.

And when your spirit joins His Spirit in prayer, you will be amazed how the real priorities of life will be revealed to you.
