Just Judgment for All Who Mock its Warning

7:13 On the very same day Noah and Noah’s sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, and Noah’s wife and the three wives of his sons with them, entered the ark.

The account of Noah and his family being saved from the judgment of the flood is a vivid portrait of the salvation we find in Jesus Christ today. In Noah’s time the world had brought itself to a level of wickedness. To not put an end to it would have been impossible for God, who is both just and loving. God warned the world of the coming judgment through Noah for many years before this judgment came (2 Pet. 2:5). In so ding, over and over God gave a message of restored righteousness through repentance and forgiveness.

In the same fashion, God is warning those in our own day of the just penalties for sin and the prophesied judgment described in the book of Revelation that will soon fall upon this world. And just as in Noah’s day, God’s warning is being proclaimed by His servants today.

Jesus warned us that just as it was in the days of Noah, it would also be in the last days (Matt. 24:37). People would be living as if nothing would ever change, that God would never bring judgment up until the flood began. Today God offers safety through Christ. Just as the Ark saved Noah and his family, so Christ has become the gift of God to shelter us from not only the judgment that will end life on Earth as we know it, but also from the unending judgment of hell.

In God’s grace He offers the “Ark of Christ.” The mocking rejection of Christ and the cross of salvation by so many will fully justify the judgment that will soon envelop them.

Genesis 7:13-8:5

13 On the very same day Noah and Noah’s sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, and Noah’s wife and the three wives of his sons with them, entered the ark— 14 they and every beast after its kind, all cattle after their kind, every creeping thing that creeps on the earth after its kind, and every bird after its kind, every bird of every sort. 15 And they went into the ark to Noah, two by two, of all flesh in which is the breath of life. 16 So those that entered, male and female of all flesh, went in as God had commanded him; and the LORD shut him in.

17 Now the flood was on the earth forty days. The waters increased and lifted up the ark, and it rose high above the earth. 18 The waters prevailed and greatly increased on the earth, and the ark moved about on the surface of the waters. 19 And the waters prevailed exceedingly on the earth, and all the high hills under the whole heaven were covered. 20 The waters prevailed fifteen cubits upward, and the mountains were covered. 21 And all flesh died that moved on the earth: birds and cattle and beasts and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, and every man. 22 All in whose nostrils was the breath of the spirit of life, all that was on the dry land, died. 23 So He destroyed all living things which were on the face of the ground: both man and cattle, creeping thing and bird of the air. They were destroyed from the earth. Only Noah and those who were with him in the ark remained alive. 24 And the waters prevailed on the earth one hundred and fifty days.

v. 13 entered the ark – The salvation Noah experienced when he entered the ark by faith provides a beautiful picture of what Jesus Christ provides when a person enters a relationship with Him.

v. 15 they went in – This seems to indicate the animals were given an instinctive response to collect around Noah and the ark.

v. 16 the Lord shut – This shows that God is the one ultimately who protects a person from judgment. It also reveals that it is God who decides when salvation will no longer be available.

v. 17 high above the earth – This makes it clear that the flood was universal not simply a local flood, which some have suggested so as to make the flood more “believable.” However, the flood was an act of divine judgment and was no more limited to natural order than creating the universe out of nothing was. God can do anything He wants inside and outside of natural laws.

v. 20 mountains were covered – Mount Ararat, where the ark eventually rested, (Gen 8:4) is 16,853 feet high. The Himalaya Mountains are as much as 29,035 feet high. If the water was 15 cubits above Ararat that would still leave only the perpetually frozen peaks of the Himalayas where no animals would exist.

v. 23 only Noah – Only Noah and his family and the animals on the ark remained alive. It is interesting to note that there are stories of a great flood found in the ancient histories of most cultures throughout the world. These ancient accounts of a flood had their origins from the accounts of Noah and his sons. As people spread throughout the earth they changed aspects of the events of the flood that suited the religious myths they developed.

v. 24 one hundred and fifty days – It was five months before the flood waters began to recede (Gen. 7:24).

Genesis 8

Noah’s Deliverance

1 Then God remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all the animals that were with him in the ark. And God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters subsided. 2 The fountains of the deep and the windows of heaven were also stopped, and the rain from heaven was restrained. 3 And the waters receded continually from the earth. At the end of the hundred and fifty days the waters decreased. 4 Then the ark rested in the seventh month, the seventeenth day of the month, on the mountains of Ararat. 5 And the waters decreased continually until the tenth month. In the tenth month, on the first day of the month, the tops of the mountains were seen.

CHAPTER 8

v. 1 God remembered – This is a figure of speech, communicating that God was about to act on Noah’s behalf.

God made – God does three things to cause the water to recede: 1. sends wind (v. 1), 2. stops the subterranean water (v. 2), 3. stops the rain (v. 3).

v. 4 Mt. Ararat – After two months of the waters receding the ark comes to rest on Mount Ararat. The area would be well suited as a location for the beginning of a new population of the earth. It is located on what became the main route to Africa and Asia, as well as a geographically easy approach to Europe and the Bering Straits.
