Stay in the Light

Therefore do not be partakers with them. For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light
Ephesians 5:7-8

When Paul used the word partaker, he was telling them not to be in one accord with them. The word is often translated as fellowship. Paul told them not to have fellowship with them.

Remember, Paul was talking about carnal Christians. He did not want them to have fellowship with people who called themselves Christians, but continued to live as worldly people.

We live in this world with non-believers, and we are called to share the hope of the Gospel of Jesus Christ with them, but just like the carnal Christian, we should not be one with them.

Remember what Paul said in 2 Corinthians 6:14; Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?

If you look at these verses from Ephesians and 2 Corinthians, it is interesting how Paul was speaking of both the carnal Christian and the non-believer.

He was speaking as if they were the same.

We are not to have fellowship with either one of them. That is very interesting.

The reason we cannot have fellowship with them is because we have nothing in common with them. We are now in the light and they are in the darkness. What would we partake in with people who are walking in the dark?

Should we have a beer or share dirty jokes with them? We cannot if we are walking in the light. If we do, we are walking right back into the darkness and Paul said, “Do not go back to the darkness.”
Unsaintly saints are the tragedy of Christianity.
