Partaking in Shame

And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret.
Ephesians 5:11-12

In Ephesians 5:7-8, Paul already told us not to be partakers with those who are walking in the darkness. He went even further in these verses. Not only should we avoid fellowship with those walking in the darkness, but we must expose them.

What does he mean by that? In the King James Version of the Bible, the word is notexpose but reprove. The word reprove means “to convict or refute; to find fault with and correct by word and deed.”

Paul is telling us we must expose the lie, expose the sin. It is not enough to walk away and refuse fellowship. We must stand up for the truth and God’s Word. We do not just tell them their actions are wrong, we take them to the Bible and we show them in the Scriptures. The truth is in God’s Word.

Then, Paul said not to even talk about the things they do in private. It is shameful to even speak of their sinful behavior. I think, many times, we do not say anything to the person who is in sin, but we cannot wait to talk about it to our friends. We will not confront, but we will gossip.

Look at what Paul said. It is shameful for us to speak of their unfruitful works. It is not only shameful, it is sin. When we gossip about others, we are sinning. We are partaking in the unfruitful works of darkness.

Whenever a godly man sins, he sins against the general purpose of his soul.
