God’s Welfare System

“For the poor will never cease from the land; therefore I command you, saying, ‘You shall open your hand wide to your brother, to your poor and your needy, in your land.’ “

Deuteronomy 15:11

Every seventh year was to be set apart as a Sabbath Year. During that year, the Jews were not to cultivate the land. They were to rest the land, so the land would produce. Then they would have better crops.

During that year, the Jews were not to cultivate the land. The people would have to trust God, by faith, to produce grains, vegetables and fruits for them to eat. They were supposed to rest in the Lord, and the Lord would provide enough, not only for them, but for the poor.

They would be taken care of by the Lord. God had a great welfare system to take care of the people without handing out money. God told them, “I will take care of you for the next year. You will be fine.” But the people did not trust the Lord, and they worked the land every seventh year. They gathered their crops and ignored God.

Many people are just like the children of Israel, and what happens? You accumulate, you protect, you watch over and then someone else enjoys your fruits. Instead of being wise and using those things the way God wants you to use them, they become a curse not a blessing.

Believing and obeying always run side by side.
