IDF bid to expel West Bank Palestinians is a step too far
A new military order will take effect this week, enabling the army to deport tens of thousands of Palestinians from the West Bank and prosecute them on infiltration charges, which carry long prison terms. The order, uncovered by Amira Hass in Haaretz yesterday, bears the signature of Maj. Gen. Gadi Shamni in his previous capacity as commander of the Israel Defense Forces in Judea and Samaria.

U.S tensions put Jerusalem construction on hold
Construction requiring the approval of Jerusalem's district planning committee has been on hold for more than a month in all parts of the city due to concerns about a new crisis in ties with the United States. Staff members of the Jerusalem District Planning and Building Committee have been instructed to halt their work in an effort to spare Israel further embarrassing incidents like the March announcement, during U.S. Vice President Joe Biden's visit to Israel, of plans to expand the Jewish neighborhood of Ramat Shlomo in East Jerusalem.

Five million should flee Tehran over earthquake fears: Ahmadinejad
At least five million Tehran residents should flee Iran's capital because it sits on several fault lines and is threatened by earthquakes, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Sunday. "We cannot order people to evacuate the city... but provisions have to be made. At least five million should leave Tehran so it is less crowded and more manageable in case of an incident," Mehr news agency quoted him as saying.

Earthquake hits southern Spain; damage said unlikely
A strong earthquake struck near the Spanish city of Granada early Monday, but at a depth that made damage to the medieval Moorish capital unlikely, the U.S. Geological Survey reported. The magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck at 12:08 a.m. local time Monday (6:08 p.m. Sunday ET), the USGS reported. It was centered about 24 kilometers (15 miles) southeast of Granada and about 370 kilometers (230 miles) south of Madrid, Spain's capital.

'Iran threatens, world remains silent'
Throughout Israel heads are bowed as the nation marks Holocaust Remembrance Day and remembers the six million murdered by the Nazis during the Second World War. During a commemoration ceremony held Sunday at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke of the lessons of the Holocaust and the Iranian threat. "Israel is a wellspring of innovation in the world, with its face to the future", he said. "But we still need to ask the question: Have the lessons of the Holocaust been learned?

Obama election-year jobs agenda stalls in Congress
The election-year jobs agenda promised by President Barack Obama and Democrats has stalled seven months before voters determine control of Congress. Democrats have no money to pay for the program. That's because both Republicans and the Democratic chairman of the Senate Budget Committee objected to taking money left over from the fund that bailed out banks, automakers and insurers and using it for the jobs bill.

US President Barack Obama warns of nuclear terrorism
President Barack Obama has said the biggest threat to US security is the possibility of a terrorist organisation obtaining a nuclear weapon. Speaking on the eve of a nuclear security summit in Washington, he said leaders from 40 states should focus on how to secure nuclear material. He said groups like al-Qaeda would not hesitate to use nuclear devices.

Biofuel findings put pressure on EU commission to change policy
The European Commission is under pressure to alter EU-wide agreed targets of replacing 10 percent of fossil fuels with renewable energy by 2020, as its own internal studies have proven that biofuels have a negative impact on the environment and food production. EU energy commissioner Guenther Oettinger is considering a re-think of policies towards spurring the use of biofuels gained from crops such as rapeseed and palm oil, as they can lead to mass deforestation and food supply disruptions, Financial Times Deutschland reports.

Euro area states put Greek loans at €30 billion
Eurozone states have agreed to potentially provide up to €30 billion in bi-lateral loans to Greece this year, should Athens prove unable to borrow sufficient money on capital markets. The decision taken by euro area finance ministers during a teleconference on Sunday afternoon (11 April) caps off a turbulent week for Greece, during which the country's borrowing costs rose to record highs. On Friday Greece also suffered a fresh credit rating downgrade by the Fitch agency.

'No real Gaza probes by Israel, Hamas'
Israel and Hamas have failed to conduct credible investigations of alleged war crimes during last year's Gaza war, Human Rights Watch said in a 62-page review of those efforts Sunday. The New York-based group urged the international community to pressure both sides to launch independent investigations before a July deadline set by the United Nations. Earlier this year, the UN warned of "further action" if the deadline is ignored, though it is not clear if Israel and Hamas could end up before an international tribunal.

Int'l nuclear summit begins today
President Barack Obama said the possibility of terrorists getting a nuclear device is the "single biggest threat" to US security as he opened a series of meetings with world leaders on preventing the spread of atomic material. Obama talked with five leaders Sunday in Washington and another series Monday to kick off a summit among 46 nations and the US where the president will press his nuclear policy agenda.
