Imitate the Love of God

Therefore be imitators of God as dear children.

Ephesians 5:1
Throughout the Book of Ephesians, Paul the Apostle has been talking to us about our Christian walk. We have learned how we have to sit in Christ Jesus, and now we will learn how to walk behind our Father. We not only come to know Him personally, but we become dependent on God.
When you look at a little child, when I look at my little granddaughters, especially my three year old, I can see so many traits of her mother and also of her father. They are so much like their parents, because little children mimic adults. They watch you, and they say and do things just like you.

When we are growing up, we often hear people say, “You are just like your mom,” or, “You are just like your dad.” Sometimes we like to hear it but sometimes we do not like to be compared to our parents and we will say, “No, I am nothing like my mom or dad.” There are things in our parents we do not want to be associated with, so we do not want to be compared to them.

As Christians, we are children of the Father and we can mimic Him and be happy with the comparison. As we grow in our relationship with the Lord, we want to emulate Him. We want to be associated with Him, because it shows how we have grown closer in our relationship with Him. We have to become like our Father, and we can through the example we have in Christ Jesus. When Paul calls us to imitate God, he calls us to love each other as God loves us, sacrificially.

Brotherly love is the badge of Christ’s disciples.
