MikeMacIntosh: "And when the men of the city arose early in the morning,"

Today's Devotion

From Mike MacIntosh

And when the men of the city arose early in the morning, there was the altar of Baal, torn down; and the wooden image that was beside it was cut down, and the second bull was being offered on the altar which had been built. So they said to one another, "Who has done this thing?" And when they had inquired and asked, they said, "Gideon the son of Joash has done this thing."

Then the men of the city said to Joash, "Bring out your son, that he may die, because he has torn down the altar of Baal, and because he has cut down the wooden image that was beside it." But Joash said to all who stood against him, "Would you plead for Baal? Would you save him? Let the one who would plead for him be put to death by morning! If he is a god, let him plead for himself, because his altar has been torn down!" Therefore on that day he called him Jerubbaal, saying, "Let Baal plead against him, because he has torn down his altar."

Judges 6:28-32

We need more fathers who will stand up for their families. Here we see Joash, Gideon's father, standing up for his son. Gideon had torn down the altar of Baal, and had angered an entire city. In fact, the men of the city were calling for Gideon to be put to death. Now realize that Joash was a part of this idolatrous community, but even he stood up for his own son. Joash shows us what a true leader should be.

The world is looking for leadership. Aren't you tired of having political leaders tell you, "I support you and your conservative morals," and what they're really saying is, "I support your view--(for now)--because I need your vote."  What we need are leaders who are like the Bereans who went and searched God's Word to find out what the real truth is! (Read Acts 17:10-12). Not only do we need political leaders who will take a stand, but we need men to spiritually fight for their families!

Warren Weirsbe said, "Before God gives his servants great victories in public, he sometimes prepares them by giving them smaller victories at home." You need to stand for righteousness and pour the Word of God into your spouse and into your children. You need to take a righteous stand for your community on behalf of God. If we don't practice our faith at home, how can we practice it sincerely anyplace else? Be a Godly man, or a Godly woman, in your household. Be a Spirit-led leader with your co-workers in your office. Let's start taking a stand for the righteous things of God.
