Do you lead as a steward who will give an account for how you managed resources? (163-1)

Because God’s sovereign hand is at work in the events of history, the wise leader seeks to become a steward whose leadership is in harmony with God’s design and plan. Read Jeremiah 27:1-7.

In the reign of King Zedekiah of Judah, Jeremiah reminded the king of Judah, and several visiting kings of neighboring nations, that God is the power behind all powers. God instructed Jeremiah to use a physical object lesson and had him wear the straps and crossbar of an ox’s yoke when he delivered the message that the kings of all these nations would serve the king of Babylon. In fact He called Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, His servant. This godless king was a resource God stewarded to accomplish His purposes.

God has entrusted leaders with the responsibility of being stewards of the physical, financial and human resources, which He puts under their care. As stewards, leaders must fit into the plan of the One who gave them the resources but are expected to realize the maximum possible return on the resources which were entrusted to them. When leaders develop, refine, and creatively utilize resources God has placed at their disposal, they become accountable to Him for the results; “Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful” (1 Corinthians 4:2).

Psalm 24:1-2 says, “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it; for He founded it upon the seas and established it upon the waters.” When a leader accepts as a core truth that nothing they possess is their own and truly believes that God has a design and plan for the universe from it’s creation into the future beyond their knowledge, it changes their behavior. It is humbling for a leader to realize that time, talent, material possessions and relationships have only been consigned to them for a few decades. Wise leaders develop a stewardship mentality and lead with awareness that one day they will give an account for how they managed the elements of Gods plan assigned to them.
