Then they came to a place which was named Gethsemane; and He said to His disciples, "Sit here while I pray." And He took Peter, James, and John with Him, and He began to be troubled and deeply distressed.
Then He said to them, "My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch." He went a little farther, and fell on the ground, and prayed that if it were possible, the hour might pass from Him.
And He said, "Abba, Father, all things are possible for You. Take this cup away from Me; nevertheless, not what I will, but what You will."

Have you heard people on the television or radio tell us that if we have any trouble in life or feel distressed about things, that we're living in sin?
They go on to say that all we need to do is to think more positively about things and that will take care of it. Now, there is an element of truth to some of that. After all, Colossians 3:2 says to "set you mind on the things above," and Philippians 4:8 says to meditate and think on the "good" things.
But the Bible also makes it crystal-clear that we will suffer and have trials as Christians. It's a part of being a member of the family of Jesus Christ. And again, it isn't something that Jesus or the other Biblical writers simply commanded--they lived it! Jesus is getting closer and closer to His death, and He is deeply distressed, so He does the only thing He can; He cries out to His Father for help.
John 14:1 says, "Let not your heart be troubled." You see, we have troubles and trials in this life--and they hurt. But Jesus took on the ultimate pain and suffering, becoming greatly distressed for our sin. He took it all on Himself! Therefore, we don't have the eternal pain of never living up to God's standards and the inevitable pain of eternal punishment for our sin. So while we feel the pain and turmoil because we're human and we experience hurt, we don't have to face eternal torment when we put our faith in Jesus Christ. Let's read more of John 14.
Let not your heart be troubled, believe God, believe also in Me. In My Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; thatwhere I am, there you may be also" (John 14:1-3).
You see! Those who put their faith in Jesus Christ won't experience an eternity in hell. We will be in a place where God's presence is, 24/7. And because of this, we don't have to be troubled. So while we experience some pain now, remember what Jesus came to do. He came as a baby, lived on this earth, died for our sins, and rose from the grave, conquering your sin!
Sometimes life gets pretty unbearable. For whatever reasons, Christmas is a huge time of stress in people's lives. So, follow Jesus'example. Trust in the Father, knowing that He is going to help you. Don't take matters into your own hands; don't start running, jumping, or anything like that. Wait on Him. Just sit and pray, like Jesus did. That is all He said to His disciples, and that's all He wants of you. Don't let your heart be troubled. Believe that God will see you through.
