Nine homeless shelters opened in NYC
New York City has opened nine new shelters in the last two months in efforts to handle the city's rapidly growing homeless population, officials said. The city recorded 43,731 homeless people in shelters this week, which is up 18 percent from the 37,143 at the same time last year, The New York Times reported. 

Netanyahu warns again Iranian nukes
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu Sunday warned threats on Israel's home front are small compared with the Iranian threat. "All threats against the home front are small in comparison to another threat -- a different kind of threat in scope and strength compared to any other threat, and therefore Tehran must not be allowed nuclear weapons," Israel Radio quoted Netanyahu saying at the weekly cabinet meeting. 

Syria crisis: Arab League postpones Syria talks
Arab League foreign ministers have postponed a meeting in Saudi Arabia to debate the crisis in Syria. The ministers had been due to discuss a new envoy to Syria to replace Kofi Annan, who resigned earlier this month.

Egyptian security forces killed seven suspected militants on Sunday during raids on hideouts in two villages in northern Sinai, security officials said. Tensions in Sinai, the desert peninsula that borders Israel and the Gaza Strip, have escalated sharply over the past week after suspected militants killed 16 Egyptian soldiers near the border 

Afghan policeman kills 10 fellow officers, in wake of Afghan attacks on US partners
A member of the Afghan National Police opened fire at his colleagues at a checkpoint in southwestern Afghanistan on Saturday, killing at least 10 of his fellow policemen, officials said. The killings come a day after two Afghans, including a policeman, shot and killed six U.S. service members in separate attacks in neighboring Helmand province in the volatile south. 

Gunmen execute 7 in Iraq, singling out Shiites
Gunmen singled out seven Shiite Muslims and shot them in Iraq's north while they were out swimming in a targeted sectarian attack, officials said Saturday. 

US, Egypt negotiating Sinai security aid package
The United States and Egypt are negotiating a package of assistance to address what administration officials described as a worsening security vacuum in the Sinai Peninsula, the New York Times reported Sunday.
