Wall St. Journal: The American Revolution & Its Ministers
On Sunday morning, Jan. 21, 1776, at a church in Woodstock, Va., Rev. Peter Gabriel Muhlenberg brought his sermon to a dramatic and unexpected crescendo. His text was taken from the book of Ecclesiastes. "The Bible tells us 'there is a time for all things,' and there is a time to preach and a time to pray," said Muhlenberg. "But the time for me to preach has passed away; and there is a time to fight, and that time has now come." Stepping down from the pulpit, the minister took off his clerical robes to reveal the uniform of a colonel in the 8th Virginia Regiment of the Continental Army...The "fighting parson" was a common sight in the American Revolution. Why? Because American Christianity— anchored in a Protestant understanding of religious freedom—gave its blessing to democratic self-government.  MORE

The Coalition of African American Pastors demanded on Monday that President Obama meet with the group to address his stance on same-sex marriage. I cannot imagine life without Andy, but I take comfort and strength in God's grace and in the knowledge that Andy is at peace and with God," she added.   MORE
AP: Evidence of 'God Particle' Found
Scientists believe the "God particle" that might explain the underpinnings of the universe is real, and they are about to present their evidence to the world.  Physicists at the world's biggest atom smasher plan to announce Wednesday that they have nearly confirmed the primary plank of a theory that could shape the scientific understanding of all matter.  The idea is much like gravity and Isaac Newton's discovery: It was there all the time before Newton explained it.   MORE
Religion News Service: Invasion of the High School Atheists
High school kids can join the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the Jewish Student Union, the Muslim Students Association and, in some schools, a Hindu or a Buddhist club. Now they can join the young atheists club, too. In another sign of the emergence of nonbelievers in American society, the Secular Student Alliance, a national organization of more than 300 college-based clubs for atheists, humanists, agnostics and other “freethinkers,” is helping to establish clubs for high school students to hang out with other teens who share their skepticism about the supernatural.  MORE

The Declaration of Independence -- A History
Nations come into being in many ways. Military rebellion, civil strife, acts of heroism, acts of treachery, a thousand greater and lesser clashes between defenders of the old order and supporters of the new--all these occurrences and more have marked the emergences of new nations, large and small. The birth of our own nation included them all. That birth was unique, not only in the immensity of its later impact on the course of world history and the growth of democracy, but also because so many of the threads in our national history run back through time to come together in one place, in one time, and in one document: the Declaration of Independence.

Thom Rainer: The Death of Elitist Leadership
It is indeed an understatement, but it's true. Leadership is changing. Some point to technological advances as the great equalizer. Others say it is the social media facet of technology that is key. A new Gallup poll shows that 11% of Americans think Obama is a Muslim, and the leftist media just can't figure out why anyone would get that idea.  Slate concluded that it must be because of "his exotic name and background, the color of his skin, or (most likely) some combination of the two."  But in reality, the reason why people think Obama is a Muslim is because of how he acts.  Why do people believe that Barack Obama is a Muslim?  Here's why: after the Muslim Brotherhood won the Egyptian presidency, the military moved to curb the president's powers in order to stave off sharia rule in Egypt.  But then Obama warned the military that they better hand over power quickly, or Egypt would lose billions in U.S. aid.    MORE
Ideas have consequences—& unintended consequences.  The Supreme Court decision about the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Acts (“Obama-Care“) is one such case. It’s merits, deficiencies, nuances and implications will be debated between legal scholars for decades and, no doubt, between the political parties for months, and between news pundits of all ideological stripes for, possibly, hours, maybe even days. Yet the deeper realities that touch our lives, craft our national consciousness and, at the risk of melodrama, sculpt the “very soul of our nation” for centuries, often remain undetected.    MORE

“In essentials, unity.  In non-essentials, liberty.  In all things, charity.”  Sounds nice, but which are which? Every- one wants to be unified in what really matters, agree to disagree on what isn’t as important, and exercise love in all things.  But no one seems to agree on what really matters a lot, a little, or not at all. As hard as it can be determining the content of our faith, it can be even harder figuring out where to put our fences. This business of deciding where to draw doctrinal lines is incredibly complex.   MORE
The Supreme Court this morning ruled that two main provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 (commonly referred to as "Obamacare") were, for the most part, constitutional. How did this happen? What does it mean for our constitutional system? Here's a few answers. What did the Court do?  The Court, by a vote of 5-4, held that (1) Congress had the power to impose a tax on anyone who refuses to buy health insurance and (2) Congress could vastly expand the Medicaid program, but (3) Congress could not penalize states that refused to join the expansion of Medicaid.    MORE
In the context of serious theological discussions, it may seem trivial to write about first impressions of guests when they visit your church. But, if we could understand that a returning guest has more opportunities to hear the gospel and experience Christian love and fellowship, we might take the issue a bit more seriously. Earlier in life, , I led a church consulting company. One of our first steps in the consul- tation was to send one or more first-time guests to the church. Those individuals would then report back to us on their experiences. Many times those we enlisted were unchurched non-Christians.    MORE
...So now America is headed for a complete and total disaster as Obamacare is fully implemented over the next several years.  Obamacare is going to absolutely shred the infrastructure of our medical system, it is going to send health insurance premiums soaring, it is going to dramatic- ally expand the size and the scope of government, it is going to fundamentally alter the relationships between doctors and their patients and it is one of the largest tax increases in U.S. history. Not only that, it is also going to add about a trillion dollars to our national debt over the next decade.  So no, the Obamacare decision is not good news.  Obamacare was one of the worst pieces of legislation in American history, and now we are stuck with it.   MORE
From time to time those who seek to make the 1960s social revolution the “new normal” advance ludicrous claims for the unreflective. This recently happened in a New York Times piecethat made the claim that the religious version of sixties radicalism, liberation theology, is the true and original doctrine of Jesus Christ....This is the basic claim of the religious left, also made by the early twentieth century Social Gospel, that Jesus’ teaching has been misunderstood by traditional Christianity, perhaps even by the apostle Paul, who mistook Jesus’ gospel of salvation from suffering as a gospel of salvation from the wrath of God, and the consequent need to be saved, and then sanctified. People don’t need salvation from the wrath of God, liberationists think, they need personal and social liberation.  MORE
Not long ago I found myself near a group of young people, listening to their conversation. They spoke a dialect of English often used by their generation: “She was, like, ‘You’ve got to try this.’ And I was, like, ‘Are you serious?’ And she was, like, ‘You totally won’t believe it.’ And I was, like, ‘I’ve got to get one!’” ...I didn’t want to judge or scold or hold any kind of opinion about their conversation, but it really bothered me to hear educated, intelligent middle-class kids talking this way....English is our conduit to the founding documents of English-speaking civilization, the body of law, literature, and Scripture that shapes our understanding of what it means to be a God-made, civilized human being. The more we change the language of the present, the more difficult it is for us to retrieve a clear message from the past.    MORE
